38:42 We don't wanna smear anything except for every single head and bed joint we already smeared. That mortar is way to wet which resulted in a small smear of mud along every joint. Hit the mortar with about 10-15% less water, strike the heads first, take a sled-runner along the bed joints for a consistent and smooth joint, run a trowel over the whole wall at a slight angle to clean up excess mortar, carefully fill in holes if your trowel work isn't where it should be, then brush/point up with the thumb jointer when the bond has set up well enough. The extra work you put into timing this process out is the difference between a skilled mason and a master mason and making it a habit is difficult from the pressure put on you to get everything finished. Trust in the trade secrets though, an extra 15-30 minutes can save humanity hundreds of years of an eyesore.

To give the torpedo level a very long straight surface to sit on 2x2 square aluminium box bar is extremely flat and will last you a very long time. I have done this myself many times.

So, how did you know that the second full block you laid was level with the first one? I didn't see you check that.

The video skips setting up batter boards which is vertical to the whole process. This is very basic and doesn’t cover how to insure the height of the wall is a specific height. It’s just assumes you’re laying the wall on a perfectly level surface to start. It’s just very basic is all.
