Huh. So when Mammoth mtn says the tarp is just there to slow the kid down as they slam into the ground they might be full of it.

Why would you stop the lift here? You could just have him go to the top and then he gets off

As an avid skier growing up I’ve seen more of these rescues than I should have! I once collided with a snowboarder getting off the lift ( we miscommunicated and smashed into each other) I ended up sitting on his sideways board with my ski trapped and got hit over the head by two chair lifts before the idiot in the booth noticed and turned it off. Had to get 9 stitches in my head! Fun toboggan ride thou!

This is the ski instructor and lift operators fault. The instructor should be watching his students getting on the lift to make sure nothing goes wrong and yell at the lift operator immediately if it does. Lift operator should have been watching to make sure they got on properly. In the industry, people falling from a chairlift are called “flyers“ it can be extremely dangerous especially if there’s no one to catch you and especially if you keep your skis on. If you fall with skies on the tendency is for you to flip headfirst and land on your head this was the best possible outcome. Amazing job by the rescue team and the good Samaritan couple who save those kids lives.

I vividly remember being in this position as a kid. Going out skiing in the German Alps, the safety bar was struck and I could not move it down myself. Terrified, I just held on to the bench itself. Unfortunately nobody saw me and for some reason I was too much of an idiot to yell for help. When the ski lift took me just between two ski lanes and some trees, the lift suddenly stopped (probably to let some elder or disabled person on). I fell partly off, holding on by the grip of my fingers for a few seconds before falling down. Thank God that I fell down besides the ski lane, since I fell in a very thick pack of fresh snow that largely broke my fall, I only got off with a few bruises. I'm a combat veteran, yet that moment as a kid is still the most terrifying of my life.

I can’t believe this doesn’t happen more often. These things freak me out. Coming from the construction trades where fall protection is required and enforced I’m surprised the ski industry still gets away with these lifts
