    Wow! I took my family to Glacier National Park a few years ago and we drove the Road to the Sun both directions. I remember starting from the west side and before we actually started the ascent, we looked up from the highway and could see all the switchbacks. Quite the engineering feat. Hats off to the snow removal crew!

    It is a 1989 D7G that sat in a Navy equipment yard for many years and had low hours. Glacier Park got it in 1997 and we had it painted and have used it ever since. I've put nearly 2000 hours on it myself on snow. I've tried D-6 high tracks and a Komatsu up there with angle blades and I far prefer the full U blade for pioneering, cutting down lifts, and pushing to the rotary snowblower. We have another D7G about the same vintage that we use as a "second" Cat to cut down the high avalanche chutes and drifting in the deeper areas of the road so the rotary can handle it.

    the snow blower follows it only has 6-7 ft high capability (8 ft wide). this is 'pioneering'. 'pioneering' is the first step. this makes the blower 'fit' the amount of snow better. i've biked the road for 35 years. know a couple crew members. cousins of a high school classmate. this section is probably the most difficult. higher elevation, closer to the pass (more drifts), and later in the plowing season (melting and compacting occur).

    Some of you were asking, why not a snowblower? A blower would freeze up in a matter of a half an hour. This is highly thick, icy, multi-layered snow in the shade. They are NOT wasting our money with foolish ideas. A great many businesses on both ends of this road depend on this crew and their years of experience.

  • @herbferguson

    @herbferguson

    3 жыл бұрын

    Partially correct. We do use a 500hp Stewart Stevenson blower but the Cats have to cut the deep drifts and avalanche chutes down to 5 ft or less for the blower...or we can push the snow to blower where the it's too dangerous for the dozers to push over. We run 5 pieces of equipment in this operation. 2 dozers up front, and excavator, blower, and loader.

If possible, I would reschedule your trip for mid to late June, the road will be open, and you won't have the huge crowds of tourists that you get in July and August. I must also point out that if you aren't staying in the park, you will need to get a permit to drive in the park ( visit nps.gov/glac ) for details.

    ceczis they got the data from Al Gore Now with Swiss data they are predicting 2100, or maybe Biden’s new green deal will make it last longer, I wonder how many gallons of fossil fuel get burned visiting it annually, and snow removal Last week, Glacier National Park announced that it will be changing signs warning that its signature glaciers would disappear by 2020. The park says the signs, put in more than a decade ago, were based on the best available predictions at the time. Florentine In terms of the predictions, the latest that I've seen actually comes from a group of Swiss researchers. So I would have to look at their results in more detail than is possible from looking at the paper they published to be able to say definitively when all the glaciers are are hosed and no longer present, but certainly by 2100

The first time I visited Glacier was in June, 1999. " Opening Day " was June 15th. We drove past snow banks 15 feet high. I have a slide in my files taken July 11th, 2002 of a young man at the top of Logan Pass on a 100 degree day. He was Snowboarding !!! If you go to Glacier National Park's website ( www.nps.gov/glac ) you can follow the progress ( and see photos and videos of the work being done ). If this is anything like previous years, the dozer is probably working on top of 10 or more feet of snow. Yes I did say that the dozer probably has 10 feet of snow under it's treads. They do use snowthrowers ( think of a snowblower the size of a semi ), but they don't work to well in snowdrifts 20 or 30 feet high.

    @@RoyADane Thanks Roy, first comment I've seen that is actually correct! Some of the drifts and avalanche chutes we work through are 15ft to 60ft deep. We run 5 pieces of equipment 2 D7G Cats in front, an excavator for the tricky spots and to loosen up hard snow for the rotary, the rotary, then a 644 John Deere loader with special snow bucket for the sections with too many rocks and to follow up behind the blower and widen the road path, details, etc.

    A front mount snow blower would be 10 times more efficient and safer. The snow will all melt before this guy can finish using that dozer. And what does all that pressure due to the low wall to the right? Silly.

    We do run a snow blower but it can only handle 5ft of snow. We have to "pioneer" cut our path and then cut "lifts" of about 3-4 foot at a time down to within 3-4 foot of the road surface. The dozers by far get rid of the most snow when we push over the edge. The rotary can blow 4000 tons an hour, but only the last 4-5 ft. this is Rimrocks section and in spots can be up to 35ft deep. The big drift which is the last one we tackle after this is approx. 60ft deep.
