To my everlasting shame, I was cheering for Duke back then. The only explanation I have for that is I really liked Grant Hill.

Georgetown needed Michael Graham. Villanova winning in the regular season game in 84 helped Georgetown win it the year before. I believe Georgetown got relaxed and did not take Nova seriously. I believe they needed to lose that game they won 52-50 in overtime or that game they barely won 57-50 at home to give them the hunger they needed to repeat. They crushed St. John's and Syracuse after losing to them. They couldn't let Nova hold the ball. Thompson should have known that.

And when a call was made, no complaining from the players. How refreshing

  • @jeffreynelson8224

What is striking is how little the officiating is even noticed in this game. No stoppages for challenges. Yes, some calls were probably wrong or missed, but game continues. There is so much bettee flows. And they let them play. Please bring this back!

The 80's were the zenith of college basketball. Never to be repeated again. 3-point shot, hand-checking, shot clock, conference realignment, one and done, transfer portal, etc., have all ruined what was great.

I feel bad for Georgetown, but there is nothing they could have done. When your opponent shoots 79% from the field, you will loose every time. Villanova would have beaten the Los Angeles Lakers or the Boston Celtics that night.

As a Red Sox fan, Vikings, 76ers I only seen one championship with the 76ers in 83. So when UConn won it all it was just bliss. The yrs that followed I finally got to see Red Sox win a few times and Uconn a 1/2 doz. Times. This was Nirvana

I am 61 and was just out of HS myself back then playing ball at the next level. Back in the early 80s Dominique Wilkins was more highly thought of than Michael Jordan. Of course, by the time Jordan graduated and went off to the Bulls he was an outstanding player, but Dean's system necessarily kept Jordan limited in his offense. But you could tell Jordan was special. Nique was also two years older in this video...Maryland had a player named Len Bias that would come along next year that might have been as good, if not better, than both of them in college. First team All American, two time All ACC, ACC Player of the Year, and chosen by the Celtics in the first round...most people know what happened after that. What might have been...BTW, I loved Al McGuire!

I’ll always appreciate and care for Coach Pitino. He did so much for UK. Everyone is human, so I don’t care about the small stuff. We all have done things we’re not proud of. I was in my early 20’s at the time of this chip, and I was always so proud Pitino was our coach.

Arkansas had caught so many lucky breaks to get tothis finals. Syracuse had them beat then a Syracuse player pulled a Chris Webber to force the game and overtime. They were lucky Memphis upset Purdue so they didn’t have to play a three seat in the second round and then Kansas got upset in the sweet 16 so they didn’t have to play the number one seat in the regional finals And then North Carolina Kentucky in the South region so they didn’t have to play Kentucky in the final four. As a Result UCLA totally smoked them in this game.

This team was the culmination of P J Carlisimo's great work at comparatively small Seton Hall, a "neighborhood" University in the village of South Orange, NJ, a suburb of Newark. Carlisimo's work in building this program, putting these players together and his outstanding coaching was something to see. Its a shame his NBA career got derailed with that ridiculous incident with Spreewell. This team brought a lot of pride to South Orange/Maplewood and I will never forget going over to the campus to welcome them back the night they returned from Seattle.

Thank you for sharing. :) Just few weeks before finally watching this (algorithm kept suggesting), I shared an FB post about "upset." That we are either in the favored or unfavorable position of "upset." Thankfully, I'm neutral here (I am barely 4 years old at this time) and yet inspiring knowing modern-day "David wins over Goliath" stories do and still happen.
