I always say, artists hate consumerism because it is too honest. It puts the Mongol horde at every possible gate. They are jealous of it.

Yes, being fooled, deluded, misled is possibly inevitable: if you think you're great at detecting a bad actor, you just haven't met a bad actor convincing enough - but they exist and, even worse, they can always exploit your flaws. That said, in Buddhist philosophy, even though there is always suffering, there are ways to see that suffering as empty. Essentially, though deep contemplation, one can see that the pain and bad emotions, including the one causes by delusion, is phenomenological and can simply be felt without attachment or aversion. When it's perceived that way, there is no suffering associated with those emotions or pain. This is what liberation in Buddhism is all about, so in a sense liberation is not just a fake craving one might have, it's a very real way of perceiving the world, and I would argue this feeling is what subconsciously resonates with people. Each small liberation, i.e. getting out of stuckness or delusion, is usually a step towards a bigger liberation, a step towards the liberation from suffering, and, a step towards compassionately helping others reduce their suffering

Idiocracy would become true, if it weren't for competitors. If the West continues on this gluttonous, woke, litigious path, it'll realize too late that China took over. And looking the pace of development, it might already be too late.

If I needed a liver transplant, I would start by going to to a Hepatologist or three. Then, I would find a very good transplant hospital and talk to the guys who have a knife. Yes, I could pull a spoon out of the dishwasher and dig out one from an accident victim. I suspect I would have a better outcome with a professional. That is not to say, I would not spend a great deal of mental energy understanding the procedures first. That is not to say, after understanding the subject, I would not ask some very hard questions.

When they called out the Health care system it made me smile because of my current situation; I have an Eye problem and when it came to being direct about treatment they whipped it out on the spot by saying "Just pay $8K on the spot and it'll be done." but because I'm poor and I'm like "But I want my Insurance involved." I got told to wait an entire fucking month because of "Network communication."

The thing that bothers me about this analysis is that sometimes there IS a sense of intellectual authority at play, particularly when it comes to scientific claims. Being skeptical of "outsourcing knowledge" can easily lead you to dismissing science and relying solely on your own gut feelings, which leads to things like climate denial and flat earthers. You're allowed to believe the conclusions of scientists if you aren't qualified to question them, the alternative is to feel required to become an expert in all subjects and to then ignore science when you fail.

Honest Question What is it called when ones rights are actively being taken away? Is it really fair for the LGBTQ community to be forced back into the closet for the comfort of a religious community that is not elected and declining? Should our Country only prepare women to be their husbands servant and a mother? Where does freedom come in when conformity is ones only option? I've watched your videos before and I think you are a very wise person , I had to watch this twice but I can't help but feel that the left is being picked on yet again. But the warning to the right is there it's just I'm pretty sure that people that watch and like your videos already has that warning as common sense. It is a shame that the right has stolen the term and deluded it with every conversation except those direct questions they are being confronted with. I think that is the real problem I see. Maybe middle children should speak up more. No life is as miserable as living in the middle of anything. The right is just afraid of change and honestly the left is watching progress backtrack. And as a nation we don't have anyone that can speak to both sides and say get a grip.

I'm a pretty big fan, but I gotta point something out here: For a guy who seems to have zero difficulty understanding that South Park's philosophy can be pretty insightful and deep despite the fact that South Park itself is absolute popculture schlock, I find it a bit strange that you don't award any such leeway to a movie centered around popculture.

Can't help but drop this comparison: "Brawndo's got what plants crave: it's got electrolytes." vs. "It's safe and effective." Your thesis is highly applicable. Some people who like to consider themselves more intelligent than the population of Idiocracy, will have to think long and hard about that.

This is complex. I've lost weight recently by reallllly restricting my diet to only healthy stuff, and it was like breaking an addiction. I have to exercise every single day, not just 3 days a week like I used to when I was younger (just turned 42) to achieve results and maintenance. I considered weight loss drugs, doctor was willing to prescribe, but some of the side effects are a little scary. Your stomach can get paralyzed? You won't digest food correctly and may need medical intervention. I wondered if I'd always need to take the drug to keep the results and if so - should I take that option away from someone with diabetes or someone much larger than I who needs that big push to get the weight off? The answer I came to was, no. Body positivity doesn't really matter for women much anymore. On instagram and TikTok, every reel of a woman who is - in the opinion of most I'd think - quite fit with a tiny bit of excess fat, or even thin women who've just given birth and are showing a normal postpartum body - get hundreds of comments from men saying they need to get straight to the gym, get ozempic, eat less, work harder, not good enough, still fat. Those comments have 100s or 10000s of likes on them. I've had men be brutally cruel to me out of nowhere about my size so I've decided to just rely on my bloodwork and how my clothes fit, rather than fixating on body positivity. I keep a clear focus on checking my health metrics and working towards improving cholesterol, fitness endurance ect. Never care what people say about your weight except your doctor, and closest friends.

The problem with idiocracy is that it predicted a decline in intelligence caused by evolution. In reality, we're seeing massive problems of voter literacy being driven by social media. Misinformation is being spread and proliferated at insanely intense speeds, often driven through AI. Tiktok is one of the worst platforms and we can see its effect on young people today, who seem to get all their news from...tiktok. They sound like morons (not that old people are immune to it). Ironically, as bad a reputation as regular news media has, it may soon become a refugee for people looking for professionally curated news. It may not always be the most trustworthy, but at least most of it isn't as nearly bad as the firehose of stupidity social media is starting to turn into.

The episode was a very good commentary on alot of modern American culture. Like it not, *everything* is an industry now. Something to be profited off of and exploited. To the point where the medical industry is purposely constructed around recurring treatments rather than one-time cures because the hospitals, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical companies make more money off of you coming back once a week. And the reason the Government does nothing about it is because Congress owns alot of stock in those companies so the only people who are able to do anything about it, dont because they too make money off of you coming back once a week.

Hey Jared! I gotta say, with the proliferation of all these video essay channels that make bloated 1 hr videos with little in the form of research or analysis; I’ve come to appreciate your work on such a deeper level. You always put in the work as an editor/writer to keep your scripts concise, with arguments that are well founded and actually represent the ideas of the source material. It is very transparent that this is a labor of love, and I’m glad you’ve found a way to continue to make these quality videos without sacrificing your own health.

It’s interesting how fundamental ‘the subject who is supposed to know’ is to the way we deal with knowledge. Academic citations and consensus are examples of this behavior. This is a lot to munch on 🤔
