You don't have to pay to walk along the lode. You have to pay to get into the hide areas, which are behind the visitor centre. This entire area, by boat or by walk, is free.
Also, I'd be surprised if the boatman wasn't annoyed with you guys for mooring on his mooring. That's where he lets his paying visitors on and off.
That’s correct for the lode, although to access Wicken Fen is payable to the National Trust, and canoeing it is free ☺️
@@UKCANOEING Canoeing is free, I've done this many times. But accessing the area you accessed is not free, it's also not allowed. There is a sign that says no navigation past this point. This is, in part, because there are water voles along that stretch. Also, I think you just said the same thing as me, the area behind the visitors centre is fee accessed, the entire fen is not. There's the lode, the three outer hides and the 2.5 miles walk around wicken fen. All free. I've been there more than 30 times and I've even moored my boat on the lode for more than 20 nights in total. I was also canoeing down the lode a couple of weeks ago.
As a fan of the channel and someone who is subscribed I only want the best for you guys on the channel so please don’t take this the wrong way . And I mean this in the best way. Claire I think you’re trying too hard. And not letting it come naturally. Your information is great but very monotone. Maybe less of a poet and more cheerful . Hope this helps you guys and your channel. 👍
Thanks for the feedback and your support as a subscriber ☺️

Thanks for sharing your thoughts 💭
Done that, had a nice slow paddle across to be met by an angry canal boater....think she was in a hurry 😂
Ah, the joys of sharing the waterways! Hope you found some zen moments on your journey 😎
Background music is always nice 😊
Thanks ☺️ we think it sets a calming tone 🎶
There are otter here but they are more nocturnal as the river gets busy with more people about, we also have grew seals up here. The bird of prey was a Buzzard, lots of raptors between Hardly flood and the Yare plus kingfisher's and Owls at dusk. Lots of people canoe here including me, you should try Rockland broad for a day out, put in at the New Inn 👍
Otterley ridiculous you didn't see otters 😂
The Perhaps next time I'll bring my otter-finding goggles! 🦦
@@UKCANOEING wotter great idea
Lovely. Just lovely ❤
Thank you so much! Your kind words mean a lot. 😊
......not disused?
Disused by motorboats and privately owned 🤩
Absolutely, lol!@@UKCANOEING
AR-OUSE my interest in Canoeing 😂 OUSE-ing with Charm an Tranquility ❤ me:🤔! wishing for a Canoe! 🚣♂️ 🤩 😎
Wishing you smooth ‘Ouse-ing’ in your future adventures, and may that dream canoe come paddling your way soon! 🛶😉
Hellooooooo
👋🏻
Absolutely gorgeous. Deffo taking my K2 Explorer out more this year.
🤟
That's a trip I want to do! I must say though my wife would help with carrying the canoe!
Haha, glad you enjoyed the video! Sounds like you’ve got a great plan there - teamwork makes the dream work, right? Hope you both have an amazing canoeing trip together!
Kyuss 🤘🏽
🤟
Que lugar lindo e calmo
We think so too 😊
Nice video. Quick tip when out paddling, keep right 👍
Thanks, will do!
I have not kayaked this water for 35 years. I may drive up in the summer and do it again.
We hope this film inspires you to do just that 😊
I miss canoeing 😊
You need to do it again!
Lovely informative video. I'm very tempted to paddle some of the route myself, but might try one of the hire canoes. much easier than trying to get the Prospector into Norwich!
Thanks 🤩 you should go for it! Really nice on a sunny day, you can even stop for a picnic in some places
We have one, it’s great I am not sure you can buy a better inflatable kayak, excellent quality and best fabric.
Couldn’t agree more - although word on the street is the new sea shine coming out will blow us all away !
You missed out the £4 toll you need to pay before Tonnage Bridge. I guess in the depths of winter there's nobody there to check the honesty box but it certainly is an issue with the canal owners if you don't pay.
Oops 😬 we didn’t know that! Thanks for heads up as we definitely will do this paddle again sometime.
Looks like a nice trip. I like how Clare always watches Tim struggle with the canoe on his own😂😂
Someone has to make sure they capture the great content 🤣
How has this channel not exploded? It's honest, quality paddling content! Great stuff😉
Aww thanks ☺️ you just made my day!
_Awesome sky-catch!_ Had an idea many years ago of canoeing across France via canals with the biggest vessel I could portage that I could camp inside with a bivvy shelter. This reminded me why I wanted to do it. Seasons greetings!
Thanks ☺️ Glad to hear it. Has it returned to your canoe list?!
The kind of tech material available now didn't even exist in those days so it's probably more doable now. I can dream, anyway!@@UKCANOEING
Nothing wrong with dreaming 💭 it keeps us alive!
Sheep cotton🤔
lol 😂
Loved that, I'm atm compiling a bit of a bucket type list of things to do next year and me and my dog will be doing this for sure, if logistics work going to try paddle the whole length in 4/5 /6 days , no rush with scenery like that. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
It was a special journey and one we will definitely do again. You will have a great time, what else is in your bucket list?
More doggy paddles please 🙏🏻
🐕 🛶 🙌
I spy a Desert Adventures water bottle in your canoe 😊
😂 you cracked me up! You are correct!! It came in handy!!
Guest starring the peers

Just a few added notes to this video to prevent people being caught out - I believe the approximately 2.3 mile section of the canal shown in this video from the Wayford Bridge junction to the disused lock at Honing (with waterfall) is privately owned by the person responsible for setting up the Dilham Canal Camping and canoe hire, Glamping pods etc (the charitable Canal trust are primarily involved in renovating the sections ABOVE Honing Lock rather than this section). While previously having free permissive access the owner has now effectively banned hire canoes/kayaks/SUPS from other hire companies (e.g. Bank Boats at Wayford or Sutton Staithe boatyard) using this section of the canal so only his own hire fleet can use it. Private kayaks/canoes/SUPs etc are required to pay a toll (£5 per vessel per trip in 2023?) to access this section of the canal payable either to the staff or the honesty box located at the landing stage with the sign on it seen on the left at approximately 4 mins 2 seconds into this video - As far as I am aware this toll is applicable all year round. A sign to this effect, recently updated, is displayed at the Wayford Bridge Junction (although the actual toll price is not shown there as far as I know).
Thanks for your notes - I’m sure everyone will find them useful and informative 😊
I'm enjoying your adventure. I'm an avid canoe paddler on the east coast of Canada. I'm usually paddling in worse conditions. Best advice is to melt into the boat. Relax, be mindful of your center and melt. Boats want to stay upright naturally. I know the anxiety of not feeling good like that. It's sucks. 🙂
I’m glad, it took a while to have the guts to post it! Wow being from Canada you must have done some spectacular paddles. Thank you for your encouragement and support 💚
@@UKCANOEING Yes I have canoed in just about every condition. The most challenging was along the north shore of the Atlantic ocean. The surf and swells were concerning to say the least. Also paddled head winds where I slowly lost ground or just sat in the same place not making any headway. That was fun too.🙄
@@philipd.murphy6970 wow!! Sounds exciting and nerve racking!! 🤙
Would love to do that trip! Is on my list
Wow would you camp?
For that I would! Has to be epic 😂
Looks amazing, well done
Thanks for your support Sam xxx
Looks a nice bit of the river there.
It was so lovely ☺️
Hi, I just got mine, but I can't find overpressure valve on it, do you know if it exists? Thanks ☺️
👋🏻 I think it’s built in, we’ve never had an issue with it 👍
We love this so much!
Thank you 😊
Neil is the best! I did an interview with him on my channel. Amazing artist! Isn’t this place just magical ✨🛶
It was incredible and very dramatic 💚
@@UKCANOEING love how deep you took it. Amazing video
@@SeniorWhoopyIRL thanks so much 🥹
Very good kids! Another enjoyable vid 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! 😀
We saw kingfishers on that same paddle tour in 2021. If you don't have your canoe you can rent one in Sudbury. The hire company also organize overnight canoe and camping trips from "Sudbury to the sea". Highly recommended! I enjoyed your video. We did it in the rain but still had fun.
Wow! That is very cool, we haven’t seen kingfishers before and keep trying! Do you know where else is good to see them? 🛶
"Promo sm"
👋🏻 what does that mean?
The Little Ouse really is a bit of a hidden gem. I've never paddled it in the winter but after watching this I definitely will. You should come back and do it in the summer as it's a really diferent experience. I saw my first Kingfisher there last spring. St Helens picnic area gets really busy at weekends & bank holidays in the warmer months though. So much so that I get down there at around 06.30 or 07.00. It gets so busy in fact tgat parking becomes near impossible. Thanks for sharing this. A really enjoyable watch👍
😍 thank you for your message, loved reading it 💚 we will def do summer, we tried the other way a few weeks ago but two trees were down so we didn’t get far!! Really glad you liked it 🙌
River looks really scenic
☺️ we think so
Best one yet kids. Keep them coming 👏🏻
We will!
