    Do you sit on the floor with the Thai family and share food in the bowls and plates? I do not do that as they put their spoons in their mouths and than put in the bowls and plates when eating. They also use their hands when eating rice. No thanks I cook my own foods and eat alone.

    As a "do not label a book by its cover" I am with a Thai that at first I thought looked India, then meeting Burmese and sudying Burma history with England and India mixing in with the culture I would guess with her thin nose, larger lips, bigger eyes, bigger smile there is Burmese in her blood although she is 100% Thai. Just one of those say 2% very different appearnce, heck she could even pass as Lebonese. Point is, it can almost become argumentive with soem as a "wink wink" and say nose and eye job, etc. We went through her younger photos, seen her dad, she is blunt honest, and has had no surgery. Just a comment for those looking to not be hasty in judging physical. Physical beauty of course in the eye of the beholder, she has a beautiful heart. UhOh! Looking like the one :)

Is it materials or climate? Anyways, something to ponder.

    @@MrCanada-x2u Materials. For some reason all water piping is done in blue pvc and joints are glued with pvc cement. A lot of it it run out in the open especially in the gardens and from the water meter to the house. Its not UV protected (some paint it to protect it) and gets brittle, plus any poor glued joints eventually fail and can leak. the water is also very hard and destroys the metal fittings leading to failure there as well.

She has a nice open style older house and land. I found it has moments of nirvana and moments of too isolated. So I am sitting on the 50/50 building or renovating. I do not like the idea of having her move away from her roots of the village. No answer yet, so I guess bit useless in my writting, more of a sharing story. Take care.

    Regarding language acquisition, i wonder if financial necessity contributes to how fast a person learns a new language, as well as intelligence. For example, you, Robb, are learning Thai at your own pace. And whether you learn it this year or 5 years from now won't affect your finacial life. But for a Thai woman, the incentives for learning English quickly can open much more financial opportunities for her.

  • @resetwithrobb
    @resetwithrobb10 сағат бұрын

    Excellent point. I still think going from a tonal to a non-tonal language must be easier, but I honestly could be wrong. I also think language is bigger part of their culture than it is in ours.

  • @jlocke3482

    @resetwithrobb I agree. Most English speakers are not exposed to the Thai language at all. So we don't even know about tonal differences. But Thais, and others, at least are exposed to the sound of English in school or in music/TV/movies.

    I hate when the PA system turns on at 6:00AM playing traditional Thai Music and than the Headsman makes his announcements to the village. You think he could wait until 9:00AM. I agree that Thais do not want to help you learn the Thai language and culture. The less you know the more they can talk about you without you knowing in front of them. I knew enough Thai to get by but I did not understand when they had conversations because a lot of the words they used were Laos and Cambodian. They mixed Thai with Laos and Cambodian. It would be like me mixing English with German and Italian.

    Foreigners go to Thailand to retire. They become bored so will go to the local bar to drink beer and talk with other foreigners. Beer is not cheap as a bottle of beer cost 135 baht at a bar or around 4 dollars per bottle. A foreigner can become an alcoholic if he is not careful with his drinking.

    Watching several of your excellent, informative videos, I’ve learned from you that you’re in constant pain. Although I’m no healt guru and you’ve probably tried a lot more things and have a deeper understanding of your situation, I just feel an urge to throw in my two cents in hopes that maybe there is something that could help and that you haven’t been exposed to yet. There are three things: epsom salts, (magnesium sulfate?), castor oil and some nutrients. Let me go with the vitamins first, as I have the most experience using them. You have probably heard about the many benefits from vitamin D? The general knowledge only extends to ‘builds strong bones’ and maybe ‘get it from sunlight’, ( which comes with many caveats - not if sunlight filtered by clouds or even pollution; also, the oils in the skin that is the actuator, is lost with age), but vitamin D has been shown to immensely increase resistance to infections, ( Dr. John Campbell gave stunning results from hospitals in Europe that proved through controlled studies that vitamin D did in fact reduce severity of the Covid infection). But, integral to its effectiveness in strengthening bones is another vitamin, vitamin K2. Not K1, which promotes clotting of the blood, but K2. It works with D by taking the calcium out of the blood, ( and soft tissue - it is said to consequently reduce plaque from the inner linings of blood vessels). It then deposits the calcium where it is needed - in the bones. It is produced by bacteria. Some live, ( or used to live before taking antibiotics etc… which destroys good gut bacteria along with targeted bacteria), in our gut. But it is available from many varieties of fermented vegetables such as sauerkraut and most popularized, Natto - fermented soybean, ( discovered in a province in Japan where a notable lack of common health issues was a mystery). So that is something that might have a beneficial effect on your project to restore normalcy to your back condition. I’ve been able to find Natto at Food Land market here in Bangkok. Maybe owing to the Japanese population around here? I also take supplements. I’ve noticed improvements in my nails, ( which were getting worse and worse over the years and are now much improved) and my teeth, always soft and prone to cavities, are much harde, ( although I’ve also cut out all sugar and carbs and alcohol). Next are a few things I’ve recently discovered but not fully implemented yet. One is epsom salts. The magnesium salt, when dissolved in a tub of water that you soak your feet in, or whole body in, gets adsorbed by the body, causing extreme relaxation and reduction of pain. Only don’t overdo it - it’s said that one can get too relaxed to even get up and move about! Finally, another ‘old home remedy’ - said to have been in use in ancient Egypt - is castor oil. Its benefit is that it will gently, over time, draw out toxins and inflammation from deep inside the body. There are kits available online and KZread videos about how to use adsorbent pads to treat one region of the body. Well that’s it. Hope it helps.

    The family of your wife will not be happy with you if you do not spend money on them. They will not help you if you become sick or need something. If you give them money or spend money on them they will be your best friend. It is not a two way street as they will never give you money or spend money on you. Do not give them money or spend money on them and watch their behavior change toward you. They think all foreigners have big money or they would not be living in Thailand.

    Nice content as always. I think part of what isn't translated will here is that side trips with giks or the routine meetings with mianoi are actually used as status symbols. The same way a fancy car or an asset would reinforce a person's status. But in a culture that has a large percentage without money for expensive assets having a gik or a mianoi can in their minds show they are successful. An aspect that I haven't seen mention is in regard to Thai women. Which are just as prone to this behavior as men are. Especially the tomboy lesbians that copy what they see as masculine behavior and are extremely unfaithful. I've watched it in many relationships adjacent to me and listened to many Thai women that when younger had dating experiences with women first because of the strong social division between genders. I see successful Thai women that are married with families giving huge loans and going on weekend trips with the tomboy giks only to discover they were just being used for sex and money, in the same way that foreigners complain about. It's very much a cultural consistency about using other people as a way to reinforce pecking order. Sadly any culture obsessed with social status and class develops these twisted incentive structures.

    It is true - you do come across as trustworthy, honest and likeable (which just basically means initial impression, which can be used for good as well as bad) - great for a KZread host, for sure. And I noticed in other video's that you sometimes demean yourself,- to hard on yourself - in the looks department. Not true, you come across as attractive, so you can relax on that one too....🙂 As for the Germans - they have a special cross to carry, let sleeping dogs lay - in my experience, if you ignore them, they are gonna be all over you in the communication department. Obviously a generalization, but the basics are there. last time I was in Thailand, also the first - as you touched upon, farangs are not really something you wanna gravitate towards. A LOT of alcoholics and sexpats, for obvious reasons. Drug abusers too. Notably the hotspot areas of course. It's like, everyone with a grudge, seems to magnetically be drawn to good old "under the carpet", TOLERANT south east Asia. I often wonder what mainstream THAI's actually feel about the invasion. You should do some interviews with them on that. Anyhoo, another good vid, keep em coming, Rob....🙂 PS - THAT COMMENT ABOUT MIE NOI? Could have been sarcasm on his part...🙂
