Draw At Home is a modern approach to teaching the traditional techniques and training of realist arts. Learn the fundamentals of drawing in a clear, logical and easy to understand way.
Thanks for these tutorials. I have started using charcoal and using nitram charcoal which has a nice warn sepia colour. However when I had to redraw an eye and used a charcoal pencil ( conte a Paris ) it rendered black/grey which clashed with the nitram willow. Have you come across this problem?
@Drawathome4 ай бұрын
Yes that can be an issue, which is why pairing willow and generals pencils work so well as both have a subtle blue/grey hue which can be off set using a warm buff tone paper.

I'm a bit confused about the whole sight-size vs. comparative: If I'm at a certain distance, not close, and if, what I measure can be put 1:1 on (a small format, like e.g. an Ingres drawing) paper, is this still considered 'sight-size'? Because it seems that the sight-size drawing concept uses an easel set up next to the model if I'm not mistaken?
@Drawathome6 ай бұрын
You are more or less right, sight size is simply drawing at the size you see, you can be close or far away the distance dosent matter. Setting up an easel next to the model obviously works if you are drawing a portrait for example but if you are drawing the whole figure? Well you need a full size piece of paper (or canvas). This exercise is actually used in the Russian schools but but not so common in European schools. Instead the easel is moved far enoh back that the figure is contained within the constraints of the paper. I hope this makes sense

Thank you so much for this video! I have been teaching Bargue at the Wethersfield Academy in Connecticut, USA since 2019 for both youth and adult and I can testify on how good of a curriculum this is for learning how to draw. I wrote a simplify version of Bargue drawing for children and I have had amazing responses from children as young as 9 years old. I hope this curriculum will be revived in many academies and ateliers around the world. It is "learning to see" as some artists describe it!

Yes it is truly an amazing learning resource, but one that is often misunderstood as a simple mindless coping exercise. Delve a little deeper and there is a wealth of information and knowledge.

The French academic drawings also use conte along with the willow charcoal.

Hi pdpete, they did indeed generals pencils are really just a more controlled version of conte sticks and easier for most beginner students to handle.

It's fascinating to watch your visual abstraction method in action. Seeing the subtly of the form emerge from a series of straight lines always amazes me. My biggest mistake is rushing too much and not doing enough checking. This is a great tutorial encapsulating the method. Thanks Chris 👍

Hi Robert, arguably the biggest mistake students make is rushing to get to the end, forgetting it is everything in the middle which is the most important part! Whilst the method of enveloping isnt always easy, it does force you to think through every step. Happy drawing!

Hi Helmut, the model used is the Mabef M36 Sculpture Trestle. This has an adjustable height but also a strong sturdy base. These tall trestles are essential for creating a suitable working environment.

Many thanks Helmut, learning the traditional approaches to drawing and painting can be very hard and expensive. We hope that our new courses and lessons will give you the student all the information you need- most importantly in an affordable manner!
