Dreams blew my mind upon first viewing. Somehow, I ended up with a vhs copy of it & I was very young at the time, I hadn’t seen any of Kurosawa’s films & only knew that he was a respected Japanese director. Anyways. Blew my head off.

Points about this film 1. This film has more accurate battle clothing than the Last Samurai; where in Katsumoto's side, wears full medieval armor from Sengoku period, But this film, they just wear chainmail under their clothes. I can only see one guy who wear full armor into battle. 2. This film Samurais don't usually use gun, and use swords, but like the beginning of this clip, acknowledged superiority of Guns, and try to fight them with better tactics. 3. This film did really goes into philosophy of what it means to be Samurai, through main character, like Last Samurai. 4. This film battle scene is smaller than the Last Samurai, but still done well enough. Overall I think if this film is better than the last samurai, if it had the budget of the last Samurai, this film would be the best.

To dream means one's was inspired, I don't wish this movie to come out ever, and the decision to discontinue this movie since the main author wasn't around to display his full vision is a very respectful move, what Satoshi Kon has left is enough to inspire, we have to accept the reality and move on, the dream machine concept is a such a loaded concept it can go in every way, the man had a message to share, cryptic or not, it can be felt in it's work, you might understand it or not or understanding it in your own way, if it's inspiring, in my opinion he did it right, and it was inspiring.

It is a relief to have something good to contrast all the bad shows that are on offer, but shogun is also just a terrific and beautiful series in its own right. The characters are complex and deep, and most of the critique I've seen towards them is that they aren't the characters from the book. Which isn't a condemnation IMO. The book still exists and I really appreciate the show for trying to give us a more authentic adaptation faithful to the japanese culture at the time. Adaptations are not and should not be seen as alternatives to the original. They're adaptations and change things by definition.

I believe the reason why Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning worked so well as an adaptation is because the OVA (Tsuiokuhen) it is based on is much more serious than the anime show. It is very dramatic and violent.

Is this film bleak and pessemistic? Yes. Is real life bleak and pessmistic? Kind of. The point of the film is not to make you think life is pointless, like some Schopenhaurean fever dream. The point of the film is to remind you that life can _often times_ be pointless. And you should respect that part of life, so that you can appreciate more the parts of life what aren't.

The reason he was apprehensive about being the father and husband to the child and woman is because of his PTSD. He isn't even sure if he is really alive anymore. And we all know, and he definitely knows that a military guy with PTSD is very dangerous, unstable, and unpredictable, and he was afraid he would end up hurting the surrogate family that he has learned to love. It was not him being an asshole.

All three movies in this trilogy are very good, but Twilight Samurai is the best of them all. I would rank them in this order - Twilight Samurai I would rate as 10/10, Hidden Blade as 8/10 and Love and Honor as 6.5/10 (Some may disagree but I rate this a little lower as I just am not a fan of the blind Samurai trope which to me seems plain silly). In each case there are strong and emotional love stories underpinning them and this is what really makes these movies different. The stories are accessible and interesting, the actors are well chosen and the whole come together in each case as a fine and watchable movie.
