You ignore the most important scene. When Toranaga meets Gin. They named the episode for it.

It's so nice to anticipate a show so much, and have it live up to my expectations. They do a hell of a job throwing in a crazy "Earthquake" twist into practically every episode, along with all the interpersonal dynamics. They really did learn the most important lessons from Game of Thrones ( at its best ). Hope there's a koi pond video eventually!

Did not realise I liked Toranaga's son as a character untill his pointless death. The cinematography in this episode was outstanding, very atmospheric. In my opinion.

Yabu likes John because Yabu, like Torenaga, is surrounded by people who are much more eager to die than to live while Yabu is the king of selfpreservation and can relate to John who also cherishes (his own) life over most other things.

People are complaining about Toronaga's sons death. I like to think it was his fate. It sucks but he was too brash and eager to prove himself and die with honor. Well there you go, he got what he wanted just not how he thought he would go. His immaturity led to his downfall before he could learn from it. Storywise im sure this death will fuel Toronaga to retaliate.

Yeah, I viewed it the same way. You get what you deserve, type of deal. I just wonder how this will affect everything and what Toranaga’s plan is.

In the FX's podcast for ep 7, they said that the scene Toranaga throwing coins onto the Tori gate while thinking about his fate and plan was the new idea as a thing children usually enjoyed to do in childhood in that period. Is that true?

Toranaga should be more concerned with keeping his best warrior in a good mental state than keeping Mariko around John, both of whom are useless in battle.

At the same time his warriors whims are not in line with his vision. Toranaga likes those who can see beyond their immediate whims. John will be of use in the grand scheme.

Especially since the other Daimyos also want him either for his knowledge or to win favour with the Portuguese. Plus I think those cannon will be worth more than one good warrior.

@@Jack-uy7ie Why would he not be able to trust another Japanese man to translate for Blackthorn? The Japanese are already trained on the cannons, which aren't a decisive weapon anyway. In real life Adams had no part in training the Japanese on the cannons and wasn't involved in any fighting at all. Because he was a navigator. His value is after the war. He is a shipbuilder and knows about European politics. Those are important things in the future, not now. And Buntaro's real life counterpart would have killed Blackthorn just for looking at his wife regardless of what Toranaga wants. I know this is fiction, but if you go through the trouble of taking real people as your character models, at least have them act like they would have in these fictitious situations, or else what's the point of using them? For instance, Mariko would be a very devout Catholic. She would not be interested in Blackthorn, nor would she be wanting to commit suicide. Adultery and suicide are not popular with extremely devout Catholics. Lol

The problem with Nagakado is the same as with Anakin Skywalker in STAR WARS. And yes, I know that this comparison is nonsense, but both characters suffer the consequences of their actions, done because of self-overestimation and will to prove themselves, because of both of them's young age.

Guys, don't forget that the Anjin leaves the meeting in the end after making some strange (barbarian) remarks and nobody gives a shit because he is what he is and in the next picture, the Erasmus has left the bay.

That wasn't a "hidden dagger" (8:52) that Markio presented to Toranaga. It was her kaiken or marriage dagger that all married women carried in those times, I think. 😅

@@joeyartkThe movie silence hits on it well, but then and kind of even now the Japanese didn’t really “comprehend “ a lot of the theology of Catholicism. There are huge cultural differences that could not be reconciled many times. Like Mariko thinking her allegiance to her liege lord overrides her loyalty to God’s Law, and yes the wide utilization of Seppuku in Japanese society. There is a real saying that a Japanese person is born Shinto, marries Christian, and dies Buddhist.
