We provide an enjoyable and informative experience for family groups; for those interested in all disciplines of modelling; and for those interested in 20th Century rural England, its buildings and its railways.
You will find glimpses of what we have to offer here.
We have a vibrant membership organisation (Friends) that supports the museum and whose members benefit from a range of exclusive activities and resources.

So basically an ecologically friendly use of the railway in a joined up logistics operation 😮in 1936…
And it worked well at the time by all accounts.
Isnt this the same set of wagons as shown in the video 'How Pendon Manages Its Trains' ?
You could well right. Thanks for watching.
My father undertook an apprenticeship at AEC in Southall and worked on the various diesel railcars.
Many thanks for sharing that @Reading71, we hope this video brought back some happy memories and you enjoyed it.
Oh thanks i like this Video
And thank you Dierk for watching, we are pleased you enjoyed it.
Lovely video
Thank you for your kind comment, we are very pleased you enjoyed this production. To help us to able to produce more for you to enjoy, you may consider becoming a Friend of Pendon. pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon
I am always very grateful to see new videos about this precious creation. I used to live in the West Midlands, so Pendon was always a cherished place to visit. However, I now live out of the country and therefore miss it terribly. If anyone has any other footage they would like to share, please consider contacting me through my channel. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comments, we are very pleased you have had the opportunity to visit us in the past and we really hope to keep bringing the museum to your tablet and laptop. We have a lot more interesting gems that are available to Friends of Pendon. Why not join? pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon
I am surprised that, unlike other KZread channels, you do not include links with each video description such as your website, a PayPal, Kofi or Patreon link and so on. I know you link to your website in your About section - but how many people look at that? I also know you link in the description to your "Become A Friend Of Pendon Museum" site. However, that implies a level of commitment that might not appeal to a casual visitor. Direct links in every video description might bring in additional revenue as some people who cannot visit you in person might well want to send a donation your way to support you. Even with the processor fees, getting something of something has to be better than getting all of nothing! If you go down this route, add the information retrospectively to your already published videos as well. You never know when people will find you.
Many thanks for your comment and suggestions, we really appreciate that. First of all we really hope you enjoyed this production and are a subscriber of our Channel. You do raise some interesting points re fund raising and as a Charity we need as much as possible to enable Pendon to thrive for the enjoyment of generations to come. Interestingly, our link to Friends Place is clicked on regularly and thankfully more and more of our viewers sign up for the modest fee of £22.00 per year and in return enjoy many benefits and material not published on-line or on KZread. Maybe you would like to join them? it would be our pleasure to have you support us and to share even more of the Pendon experience with you. pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon
I remember unloading parcels (some very heavy) on the up slow platform at Watford Jct. just before the early morning rush of passenger trains to Euston. We worked so fast that parcels were piled up against the Station Master's door and then when the train pulled out much of the pile fell onto the tracks. We then jumped down to clear that and then it was a heckof a rush to barrow (before the B.R.U.T.E.S.) it all down the lift to the parcels office.
Well, that does bring the past to life and puts the subject of this video into context. Many thanks for sharing your memories with us, that sure must have been hard work. We hope you enjoyed the video as well.
Hurrah another railway video from Pendon, its been a while
It's been a while and we appreciate you waiting for new content. Hopefully it was worth the wait and we will try to release our next production before too long. If you would like to see more interesting material, not available on-line or on KZread, please do consider becoming a Friend. There are many benefits for £22.00 per year. pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon

Thanks for watching, we are pleased you like it.
Only Three minutes long. but but once again packed with information, not just a pretty Face!! Oh and the Bridge was . . Fantassstic 😃😃⭐⭐⭐⭐
Exactly! Quality over quantity every time.
How must that make you feel when your home is accurately included in a model railway village, the rise and fall of the land, the layout the farm and other houses, simply fascinating!!
Thank you for watching @toucan221. So many residents of the area showcased in our Vale of White Horse diorama, have been amazed to see their own little piece of the Vale recreated in miniature for us all to enjoy.
This is one of the best YT channels on Model Railways. Love the backstory and how it ties in with the models. These videos are soo enjoyable that I have watched each one multiple times.
Thank you @BrewPub. That was always our founders dream, to recreate and preserve this now bygone era. Showcasing the people, the places and the transport which all formed part of their life in the 1930's. If you would like to see more than we can ever put on KZread, please consider becoming a Friend of Pendon. We offer many benefits for a modest £22.00 per annum. Just an absolutely stunning and detailed layout. I love watching these videos and hope to see it in person soon.
Thank you, we appreciate your great comment and we hope to welcome you in the museum, when you visit.
Is there such a word as "stunningest" as in "stunning, stunninger, stunningest"? If not there damned well ought to be!
We agree!
Wo kann man Bücher über dieses wunderbare Museum kaufen. LG. Dierk aus Aachen in Deutschland

Glorious models and scenery but the physics needs some work.
Very pleased you enjoyed watching the video and for your great comment. Not sure about the physics though.
Amazing place, currently sat in the carpark watching this after our visit! Highly recommended!!
Thank you for visiting us and for your great review. We are so pleased you enjoyed the museum and video. Please do subscribe to our Channel and enjoy seeing other trains in close up detail.
Superb! My wife and I visited 10 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice to see the engine driver’s view.
Thank you for watching and for visiting. Maybe we will see you again in the future. In the meantime do please keep watching.
I’ve been checking out your vids. Super fun and I enjoy the tutorial style.
Thank you. We are really pleased you are enjoying them. More to come during 2024.
Great video. Thanks for the education.
Our pleasure!
Good to hear 'G. J. Churchward' referred to as such and not as though he were being sentenced at the Central Criminal Court. ('George Jackson Churchward, I sentence you to......). The other correct way was of course 'Mr. Churchward' .
Many thanks for your comment and for watching. You are quite right of course.
Interesting. I didn't know Britain had much anthracite. Several railroads in the northeastern US fired with it in special Wooten fireboxes. It burned much cleaner than bituminous.
As far as I'm aware the only major deposit of Anthracite in Britain is in South West Wales. If you look at the wagons carrying Anthracite they have the name 'Cwmgwrach' on the side, which is a village in Neath Port Talbot county borough, Wales. Like much of western South Wales coalfield, the coal was high quality anthracite. The best coal came from the deepest seam called Big Vein ( also seen on the wagons ). Cefn Coed, about 14 miles from Cwmgwrach, was worked at depths of over 2,500 feet (800m), and was the deepest anthracite mine in the world at that time.
Many thanks for your reply. We hope you enjoyed the video.
Many thanks for watching and for sharing the information. We hope you are enjoying our videos.
Personally, I would have liked to have heard more about the train itself, as I have designs on making my own parcels/fast fitted express freight train, and am looking to get a rough estimate for number of wagons 'on'.
Sorry for the delay in replying @TallboyDave. There are 12 coaches in our video. Good luck with designing your own model as well.
By my maths, the model is older than the prototype ever was.
You are correct it is an aging model and has had a new motor fitted.
A lot of the information in this video came from this page: igg.org.uk/rail/7-fops/fo-traintype.htm
Wonderful way to highlight the many pleasant views that bring joy to my heart every single day, was most fortunate to meet my Darling Wife while serving in the R.A.O.C. Barracks at Didcot during National Service in 1952 / 54, Elizabeth was an Evacuee from London during the Blitz, and the People of Long Wittenham opened their arms and Hearts to accommodate them at Long Wittenham were we met in 1952.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. The residents of Long Wittenham are still as warm hearted and will be pleased to hear of your experiences here. We hope you enjoy the rest of the series.
2474 of the same class was still shedded at Reading in the mid 1950s.
That’s good to know, thanks for the info.
❤
Thank you.
Oh what a beautiful little train
Very pleased you enjoyed it. Please stay tuned for more episodes within Dartmoor. Maybe you would like to become a Friend of Pendon? Details here: pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon

I've signed up as a Pendon Friend for the second year so it would be rude not to!@@PendonMuseumVideos
Great history...fascinating as I grew up in Wirral where we had main line coal and passenger trains, mainly 2-6-2s
Many thanks for your comment David, we are very pleased you enjoyed this video. If you would like to see much more that is not on KZread, you may consider becoming a Friend of Pendon. Details here: pendonmuseum.com/friends-of-pendon
New Pendon video after all these months! Wheres the railmotor from, is it one of those new Kernow ones?
No, it's quite an old model, of one of the shorter (59 foot) railmotors, whereas the Kernow is the 70 foot version.
Might be from the old Blacksmith kit
Many thanks for watching. It is (as @smhorse thought) a Mallard/Blacksmith etched brass model of some vintage. It has been upgraded as with all of our stock with particular attention to valve gear. In fact the model predates the Kernow offering by some decades. If we were to get another model, we would probably choose Jeremy Suter's exquisite etched kit - See Scalefour Society for availability.
Correct, it is (as mentioned) a much upgraded Mallard/Blacksmith. Thanks for commenting and for watching.
Yes, you are correct. It is in fact a Mallard/Blacksmith.
Oh wonderful i like verry mush
Many thanks Dierk, we are very pleased you enjoyed it. Stay tuned for the next episode.....
Haven’t seen a new video for a while, lovely to hear from Pendon again
Thank you, we are pleased you enjoy watching our Channel. We hope to bring you much more during the year.
@@PendonMuseumVideosThat is wonderful news
Thanks for posting this, a great little video. I thought that cleanliness of the coach portion was also an issue with the steam rail motor concept, in that the whole thing had to go into a dirty steam shed for servicing.
You are correct and also, every time the engine went into the service shed, the whole train was out of action….
Simply beautiful.
Thank you John. We appreciate your great comment.
Nice to see the line in colour, and running with the original engines. I never tire of seeing film of the Madder Valley (or Pendon Parva) - a real treat when previously all we've had are black and white still pictures. Thank you.
It’s our pleasure to share these videos with you John. Thank you for your kind comments.
Superb as always. Thank you 🙏
And thank you for watching. We are very pleased you enjoyed this video.
Very nice video and fantastic details. New subscriber. Greetings. Stefano
Thank you for watching, we are very pleased you enjoyed this video.
This is HIGH ART folks. It deserves appreciation and the modeler our respect. Beautiful work. I imagine there is more on KZread about the actual creation of these buildings. That to me would be a dream watching such an object being created. Thanks for all you do. I'm happy to be a subscriber to this channel.
Thank you so much for your great review and positive comments. The Pendon team (who are all volunteers), work very hard to provide this unique online and onsite experience and we are so pleased you enjoy it. Maybe you would consider being a Friend of Pendon? A visit in 2010, was a history in its self, could have stayed there all day.
Thank you @jonethomas3892, your endorsement of our museum is much appreciated. We hope to see you again in the near future.
Roye England, a delightful man. His dedication to the vision of Pendon will live for all time. Some years back I did pull his leg about the painters having not yet finished painting the railings around the pond by the pub. The last I saw of them, they were still there enjoying a lunchtime pint.
Thank you for sharing your memories of times with Roye, his dedication does indeed live on through all of the volunteers at Pendon (and some still enjoy a lunchtime pint)…..
Despite assertions by some cetain modellers in the USA, THIS is THE epitome of railway mdelling bar NONE.
Thank you for your great endorsement, it is much appreciated by all of our volunteer modellers who try hard to bring the past back to life for future generations to enjoy.
Agreed! I live in Canada and have seen many American and Canadian layouts but they cant hold a candle to Pendon Its the lack of historical details that let them down, the likes of Dartmoor and The Vale scene such scenic views let alone the details in the buildings, farms and villages.
Pendon will ALWAYS be my personal standard of excellence to aim for, but never reach. Indeed, there are (or, alas, have been but are no more) some very fine US layouts which also inspire me - but there's something uniquely different about Pendon, both the Vale of the White Horse and the Dartmoor scenes, and the Madder Valley. Having John Ahern's masterpiece on display beside their own marvels perfectly displays how far the hobby has come in 70 years.
Today I have just visited Pendon. This gives a totally different view of your superb modelling! What a gem - thank you!
And thank you. We really hope you enjoyed your visit and are very pleased you enjoyed the video. If you would like to see some more hidden gems, you can sign up for free: pendonmuseum.com/youtube
