1923 Pickup Goods Train - between Reading and Swindon
A local service for communities along the line. In the Pendon period railways provided a range of local services and facilities for people sending or receiving goods by rail. These were served by stopping freight trains, that dropped off and collected vehicles. These were called `pick-up goods trains’, and were a leisurely exercise serving all the stations on a particular line.
This train, the Great Western No. 2323 is one of William Dean’s celebrated ‘2301’ class of 0-6-0 goods engines, first introduced in 1883. There were 260 of these locomotives in all. Some were still running into the British Railways era, mainly in Wales.

2474 of the same class was still shedded at Reading in the mid 1950s.

Two Provender wagons and a Coopercraft? Mex, the kit build wagons fit in well with your classic rolling stock, can I expect to see re-gauged RTR Rapido Iron Minks and GPV etc. in the future?

William, many thanks for viewing our video and for your question. At present we don't have plans to use Rapido stock as current offerings don't fill any gaps we have. We will continue to monitor their releases though.
As usual I enjoyed this Pendon video. There is a caveat. This was a pick up goods train. The fact that it failed to stop and pick up or set down any wagons at all in the period modelled seems unlikely. In modern model railway operation there is a tendency to simply run whole formations in a procession. Nothing is set down or picked up. I would really have liked to see more operation in this particular film.

You are indeed correct and it would be great to be able to have it stop, drop off and pickup but in the context of the normal running day in the museum, just wouldn't be feasible. @@PendonMuseumVideos I am puzzled by the claim that it is not feasible. If exhibition layouts can do this with Alex Jackson couplings then surely it is. The main line would be left clear whilst shunting proceeds. What is the difficulty?

@Jack Alltrade Yes, we do appreciate your point of view and as mentioned we will try to incorporate your wish into a future video. This can be filmed when the museum is closed because during opening hours our volunteer train drivers and guides are always busy interacting with visitors to ensure they get the very most of the Pendon experience during their time with us. As you will know, there are a number of interesting trains running simultaneously (to a timetable) and visitors are always amazed as the trains pass through The Vale, which in itself has so many unique buildings and vistas offering a true glimpse of the 1930’s in miniature.
