In May of 1971, Marvin Gaye released What's Going On. A year later, he performed it at the newly-opened Kennedy Center.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this event, the Kennedy Center is leading a national conversation around the issues and ideas on the record. We'll ask young people to think critically about the themes of the record and respond in their own artistic voice. In May 2012, we'll bring the conversation-and the concert-home to the Kennedy Center.
What's Going On...NOW, part of the Rubenstein Arts Access program, is generously funded by David and Alice Rubenstein.

12 years later and she is still extremely underrated 😭😭 I saw her open at a mitski concert and I need to see her on her own now
This is the way to sit and listen to you favorite song,,,, just Take it apart, and put it back together slowly
It’s cool that quest can hear at this level of detail!!
they punched a clock but played together at night in strip clubs and were really close. you don't get this from strangers punching a clock. this is neighbourhood shit that can't be replicated
No doubt!
it would be interesting to hear Questloves take on it today. he's always evolving musically . so cool to hear this
These fellas will be digging for Marvin's gold forever, and they won't get enough time to do it all. Marvin is too precious, too deep, too soulful. That album specifically, and many by Bob and the Wailers, are tributes to the spiritual powers of the roots music. Unmatched works. 💪
God's love is going to be a great blessing, Marvin always know that
Funny that Questlove sees this as a dead of winter dark night song, I don't. In 2005 I was walking up Avenue of The Arts in Philadelphia as they were shutting the street down for a pre 4th of July block party near City Hall. A DJ for the event was just powering up as the sun was setting and use this a his opener. I thought, WOW what a great vibe this is and this song will forever feel to me as a song for a summer sunset, slipping into the warm night, surround by Brotherly love.
2023 she is now all grown up 6 alums just saw her today on CBS SATURDAY MORNING her national debute she performed 3 songs I wish she did all of her amazing song !!! This girl I truly ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ admire she is one in a billion unique like no other, this what a truly artis is like jimmy Hendrix janet to me she is Janis Joplin of this generation. Adore her
I would like to listen the musician she names but I can't understand very well. Anyone catch it?
Chet Atkins
thanks
Okay Funk Brothers, get it!
One name. James jamerson.
I sleep to the album its on almost every night. Incredible masterpiece. Never gets old and its deep too in terms of the messages in it.
While an incredible musician Questlove is, he literally contributed nothing here, even came across a little arrogant for some reason
Amazing song. It works harmonically, although the bass is often two beats too early on the new harmony.
Huh, i always considered that to be a signature thing for this song. The band going to the accent cord, but the bass cutting back to the root before the rest of the band changed back. Very dynamic, a little tension before resolving. The guy that played for Phil Collins didn't do it on purpose, he wanted to leave the original stand alone by itself.
Dope
First time seeing this, incredible, after having listened for couple years, this is great!
Wish this video had been an hour long
One of my top 10 all times albums and songs.
do these guys not like each other?
It's easy classics for a lifetime always going to make people dance and feel the energy from the artists and musicians who created it from they soul.
Quest flyin
Why is this panned hard right and left?
And now he has his own song called God Is Love
i have the multitrack to this and its just amazing , breathtaking
Very cool.
Phenomenal breakdown of each instrument, the simplicity of each combined became an intensely profound powerful artistry, that will continue for many generations. Brilliant 👏
My Father played the sax opening on that song. R.I.P. Dad.
Is your dad Eli Fountain?
@@crabken4969 yes
She is one talented girl how she plays that guitar and with no pick is amazing and he voice for singing I'm surprised she is not rich by now with the talent she has. She is amazing
Check KZread for the 11:50 minute version of Whats Going On. Someone has extended the song to include all of these parts separately. The bass section is so outstanding it could be a song all on its own. This is one of the most well orchestrated songs ever written. Listen to that acoustic guitar, there is nothing better on earth, not Beethoven, not Bach or Mozart.
Wasn't this clocking in structure taken from the Auto assembly line culture at the time . Barry Gordy worked in the Auto assembly line, and too some of techniques into the Motown studio environment .
At the. 2:35 ! I hear Amy Winehouse the beat; the beginning of her song; you know I’m no Good
One word "GENIUS "
The Snake Pit.
Hearing this for the first time makes me feel sad and great sad because Marvin is no longer here and great because I was around when this great if not the greatest MOTOWN composition to be made came out in 70 and I drove as fast as I could to buy this masterpiece and listen to it for 48 hrs pretty much straight. Thank you GOD for letting me live to hear it.
literally would give up a kidney to get my hands on the masters for this album
@Kai McCook I am eternally grateful to you if possible could you recommend a safe website for downloading that?
3 guitars, electrics, acoustic, Vibes with Piano, 2 drums+perc, and this type of layering, sounds influenced by Phil Spector. But then what isn’t? Spector was MIDI’ing sounds before there was MIDI.
Could listen all day to this break down
The most incredible album to me. It's like a progressive Motown R&B album. Like what Prog Rock does blending one track to the next. Absolute brilliance.
#%#@ AMAZING
In a TV interview after the Let’s get it on release they asked Marvin his thoughts on the WGO album and his response was “I don’t remember a single thing about the making of that album.” He continued...” God made that album”. He was dead serious and didn’t wanna discuss it any further.
I never noticed a Rhodes piano. I thought I knew every sound in this song. The final mix was painstakingly meticulous. They rode the faders till the wheels fell off. It must’ve taken forever to mix this masterpiece. Marvin was in no rush.
I don’t hear it. Can you tell me where it is
Wish we got to hear more James jamerson
What an absolutely wonderful soul.
Quest love should be able to make original beats and compose beats from scratch. I don't think he need to sample.
I sing with The Originals which is the first group marvin produced. Before i sang this group i sang with the group Called For Lovers Only which sang on Soultrain the day prince was on and i was wondering if you could send me a copy of that show. Thank you so much.
9:00 Sunny watches Alex Jones confirmed
What questlove misses imo is the funk brothers were 60.s jazz musicians. It is and was a different mindset. They punched a clock- but played jazz whereby the musician made- is mostly played for the band itself. The money is just an afterthought, unlike the wrecking crew. To understand he should watch the documentary on the funk brothers. It was a different generation, a different mindset.
Essa mina é um maior talento...muito massa parabéns sou seu fã na humilde...
Oh Sunny, feelings mutual on the writing, think it’s cheesy months later it wasn’t bad actually. Love always, take care
