It's got to be one of the best songs ever written, as good a song by anyone you care to mention. The recording and the arrangement is stunning, nothing complex, no showing off, all simple parts that serve the song. Yet, when you put them altogether, it sounds dense and satisfying. Magic, that is what you are listening to, a wee slice of pure magic all captured on a wee spool of magnetic tape. The man isn't dead, he's just not here. BIG difference.

One of my favorite records. My sisters had it when it came out on 8 track I think. 69'? I would crawl under my sisters bed and just listen to the whole conceptual piece. I was 9 years old. They had the Beetles etc. But this record had soul. Thanks Marvin. Resting in Peace.

Hearing this for the first time makes me feel sad and great sad because Marvin is no longer here and great because I was around when this great if not the greatest MOTOWN composition to be made came out in 70 and I drove as fast as I could to buy this masterpiece and listen to it for 48 hrs pretty much straight. Thank you GOD for letting me live to hear it.

I never noticed a Rhodes piano. I thought I knew every sound in this song. The final mix was painstakingly meticulous. They rode the faders till the wheels fell off. It must’ve taken forever to mix this masterpiece. Marvin was in no rush.

These fellas will be digging for Marvin's gold forever, and they won't get enough time to do it all. Marvin is too precious, too deep, too soulful. That album specifically, and many by Bob and the Wailers, are tributes to the spiritual powers of the roots music. Unmatched works. 💪

Check KZread for the 11:50 minute version of Whats Going On. Someone has extended the song to include all of these parts separately. The bass section is so outstanding it could be a song all on its own. This is one of the most well orchestrated songs ever written. Listen to that acoustic guitar, there is nothing better on earth, not Beethoven, not Bach or Mozart.

I love this video but damn, the audio mix was really messing with my head! Harry Weinger's audio was coming out of the right channel only, and Questlove's audio was coming out of the left channel only but looking at them from out perspective, the audio should have been swapped to match where we were seeing them in the frame. Either that or they should have put their voices in both channels instead of just one.

3 guitars, electrics, acoustic, Vibes with Piano, 2 drums+perc, and this type of layering, sounds influenced by Phil Spector. But then what isn’t? Spector was MIDI’ing sounds before there was MIDI.
