The Aspiring Clinical Psychologist
The Aspiring Clinical Psychologist
Welcome to the channel! A place where we talk about anything and everything to do with the journey to becoming a clinical psychologist in the UK, as well as other careers related to psychology.
My name is Julia and I have worked in various NHS settings and in various roles, including as an assistant psychologist and a research assistant. I hope you will join me on this journey which I'll undertake with the help of some friends and colleagues, through sharing their stories and experiences.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve the channel, what topics to cover, collabs, etc., drop me a message.

So I applied for rehabilitation services technician and I really want to pass the interview, would you like to share a few pointers about the position? And questions they ask? And how to answer them 😅
hey? how did it go?
Thank you ❤
Thanks for explaining in detail the volunteer opportunities for psychology students. Much appreciated.
Jennifer is amazing! Thanks for the tips, very useful!
Do you need a master's degree to apply for as a research assistant in NHS?
Hi, it will depend on the RA position itself. Some will, and some won't. The 'personal specifications' description will tell you if a master's is required. Although either way, it can be helpful as things can get competitive. Good luck!

I found this video really useful.
it's derwent water!
You're right! I didn't even know the name. It's so beautiful!
This is really informative! Thanks 😊 Hey I have a question, I doing my masters in psychology at the moment but I'm afraid that my lack of MATHS GCSE might be a problem in getting a decent job in the NHS. Do you think it's mandatory in order to get into the NHS?
Hi, I would imagine doing a master's degree demonstrates that you are very capable academically! I have to admit I don't know much about GCSE requirements. I had a quick look around and it seems some jobs or courses normally require a certain number of GCSE's, including maths. However, on some websites it does state 'normally', so I imagine there is some leeway. I would suggest having a think about what it is that you would like to do and maybe inquiring about the requirements for that role or course specifically. Where there's a w̶i̶l̶l̶ master's, there's a way. ;) Good luck!
Great video, really helpful to get people thinking of all the different types of jobs within the psychology field!
Nice vid, this is helpful :)
So helpful- thank you very much :)
Really helpful video, I’ve got a much better idea of what jobs to apply for now.
Hey, thanks. That means a lot. It's always a little scary putting a video out there and wondering if anyone will find it helpful! :) Good luck in applying!
This is going to be a long comment so I’m really sorry but I would be very interested in hearing you talk to people from other psych jobs. I feel like while we were in uni the most talked about was the Clinical Psych or Phd options so now after graduation we’re kind of in an unknown and we don’t know our options besides the ClinPsy. I’d really appreciate hearing people talk about how they got into other courses and their experiences with the job, especially with Systemic Family Therapy as the route seems very confusing to me. It seems like as Psychology graduates the only way to do it is either get a masters in something different such as social work and work a bit or do a doctorate. I’d also be interested in hearing an Educational Psychologist talk about their job and distinguish how it differs from Clinical Psychologists working in CAMHS, especially from an EdPsych that works in CAMHS. There is also the route of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist which I don’t think was mentioned here but is also an option. And finally, I think a couple videos on the HEE funded postgraduate roles such as the PWP, CWP, EMHP etc, talking to people who are not using these roles as a stepping stone for the doctorate but actually considering them as their whole career would be great. Most often these are not viewed as career paths but just stepping stones and it’d be interesting to know if they are feasible to consider as a whole career.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to write that. I very much agree that we don’t get enough information at university regarding the different careers and especially the ones directly related to mental health which is a shame as there are so many options beyond clinical psychology. And yes, it does seem that a lot of people use the PWP, etc route as a stepping-stone towards the dclipsy, but they can be careers in and of themselves as well. That is definitely the plan for the channel, to interview people working in all these different roles. I have some friends in PWP, CWP roles and I am in contact with them, so I hope I can speak to them soon. I also hope if the channel gains a bit of a following, this will make it easier for me to contact people I don’t know who might be willing to talk about their roles. So, thank you for all those ideas. :)
Hi Ayten, I’m an ex-PWP and soon to be qualified CBT Therapist after just finishing my training and you’re right, IAPT-based careers are too often seen as mere stepping stones when actually they are fully fledged careers in themselves. I have realised I absolutely love what I do and now no longer want or need to go into clinical psychology. Happy to share more about my experiences if it would be helpful :)
Hi, i am currently doing A levels, my subjects are psychology, English and physical education. can I enter university's to study phycology with these A levels
Hi, you should be able to! If you google the universities you are interested in and go into their 'entry requirements' page, it will give you more specific information since each course may have different requirements. It will tell you what they require subject-wise (sometimes you need at least one science subject and psychology tends to count as one), as well as the specific grade requirements. Good luck!
@@theaspiringclinpsych thank you, I really apreciate it.
Hi, loved this video, very useful information! I was wondering where you found the counselling skills training as this is something I would like to look into? Thanks
Hi! The course I did is called TQUK Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills. I simply looked at adult courses at my local college. It was all online, so I imagine you can sign up to one even if it's far away. The duration was 12 weeks. I think there are various Level 2 counselling skills courses out there. Some are in person and take longer and I'm not sure if those would also be free. I hope that helps!
Very well presented and clear.
