    People keep saying this is a simple concept but they can never explain it simply which makes me think they don't really understand negative voltage either.

    Nice breakdown of the breakdown. Its sad to see it fall apart like that, and hearing other folks talk about how he's been (in your vid, and the comments here). I'd love to see the Video done, but I could live without it, if it meant he'd come back to the community (not sure how many would trust him, understandably)

    Dude, wtf you're getting on the Box Canyon and everything? Who are you, and how do I paddle with you one of these days? That's been one of my dream runs since I started paddling, and this was when the Last Grasp/Sunlight Strainer mandatory 6th portage where the accident occurred back in 2007 right after Leap Of Faith still existed, correct? Heard the entire canyon wall that formed the sieve that everyone washed under in 2007 got completely blown out by the recent flood. Are you a DC local though, or have you moved since then? I always remember watching your Great Falls videos a few years back, along with your history of Bitch Monkey, so figured you were at least originally from my area. Your recent footage though has been so sick, and I'd love to paddle with you one of these days if you're ever still in the DC area. Man I got into paddling whitewater like 10 years too late...

  • @quicknuclearscience
    @quicknuclearscience6 ай бұрын

    Yea, the portage after leap of faith existed, wasn't too bad. Now I hear you have to portage that plus leap of faith itself and it's not the most fun. I grew up on the Potomac, tom mcewan taught me to paddle, started running great falls in high school and stuck around for undergrad. Now Ive been in grad school out in colorado for 5 years. I come back to town sometimes to see my family for thanksgiving and stuff. And you did not get into paddling to late, boat designs have progressed so much, what I would have given for a good half slice 10 years ago.

    The wilderness. It is a place where people don’t go to because it’s hard living off the land, when you want free handouts. Joking aside it can be anywhere from eastern Washington to Wyoming because they have all the same geography, states included Idaho and western Montana. Unless the person that uploaded it gives the precise location we will never know.

    Old timer here. This is pretty good flows for what the river is now, but it doesn't even begin to match what it was like back in the '50's when some friends of mine and I ran it. We may have been the first and last to run the river all the way from Almont all the way down to its confluence with the North fork outside of Hotchkiss. The only reason we could do it was because they hadn't yet built the dams, and it was still a free and wild river. We did it in the late spring during the snow melt, so it was very full and almost all the falls were washed out. In many places the water was wall to wall, and damn was the current strong. Did a lot of scouting, but there were stretches where, due to the wall to wall water, we just had to go and pray to the river gods since there was not place to stand and get a good view ahead. I guess looking back on it, we were super stupid and super reckless. Being honest though, at those points we were committed (or maybe should have been committed) since there was no way to walk or climb out. This was back in the day before plastic boats had been invented, and what we had was the new gee whiz material, fiberglass. Fibreglass boats tended to get holed and cracked rather easily, and so we loaded ourselves down with repair kits and and spools of duct tape. When we got down to our takeout point, we had half a roll of duct tape and no repair kits left. We also had one kayak which had a collapsed deck which was being held up by a piece of driftwood, and even the the thing was leaking like a cockpit with no spray skirt on. The good part was the damage had occurred on the last major rapid, and the river is pretty docile from that point on. On our decent, most of the rocks shown in this video were not visible above the water, and there wasn't much in the way of plant life growing down there either. I saw one of the kayakers in this video brushing by a plant I would have loved to have seen. He probably didn't have any idea what it was. It was a wild raspberry, and if he had have gently pushed the leaves aside, he might have had a small, but delightful snack of tiny fresh, wild raspberries. Just to give some idea about how washed out the river features were, there wasn't anyplace along the route where you could have done a boof. There were at least two places that I remember though where there was so much in the way of air bubbles that our boats lost buoyancy and we ended up to our shoulders or necks, even though we were using boats which were higher volume than anything you can get on the market today. It was a bit worrying when you felt your boat going down. The even weirder thing was that you could still paddle because it was mostly air down to a point. That was the weirdest water I've ever been in. I could go on forever about our trip down the river and what we did down there, and I could grouse all day long about how the dams have wrecked it, but at least there a bit of it that, even though it's a shadow of itself, is still providing some good boating for yet another generation of kayakers. I think (or at least hope) that the limited access to the river through the National Park will protect it from further encroachment, and will provide good quality wilderness kayaking for generations to come. That's my nope anyway. Happy Kayaking!
