With an app, the attack wouldn't be on the app itself since it's on your device. The attack would be on the APIs and other web related assets that the app relies on.

I've been part of the hiring process for the last few years for the last few teams I've been on. I've been a software engineer for about 9 years now, and I don't check someone's GitHub page, nor have I been asked to demonstrate my GitHub page in interviews or on resumes. I also completely disagree with people on LinkedIn or any other platform that make a claim that if someone's GitHub isn't filled with contributions, they won't be considered for a software engineering position. In short, contributing to GitHub projects (or any other open-source project -- GitHub isn't the only place that hosts open source projects) isn't a requirement or necessarily a flex in an interview. (However, I tend to enjoy talking with candidates more who have a passion for software engineering and build software outside of work whether that's on GitHub or a personal project). On the other hand, contributing on GitHub can provide great networking opportunities. However, this does require you to get involved in a single open-source project rather than making random contributions to a large number of them. (Not that it's necessarily a bad thing to explore several different repositories). The point is that if you want to network with other software engineers is you'll need to work with these engineers frequently and demonstrate that you work well together to build the kind of relationships that might lead to more job opportunities. (Not from showing it on a resume but by making connections with people who might be able to get you into a job opening at their company if one exists.) This also requires finding open source projects using the same systems and technologies you want to work with in your field and finding an open-source project that potential employers are likely going to be interested in. Overall, I don't think open source should be seen purely as a place to build job opportunities. I contribute to open-source projects because I use a lot of open-source software. Some of my favorite pieces of open-source software are places where I'll contribute because I want to see the project be successful, I enjoy building new software, and because I already know the software and understand how it's designed to work and what kind of improvements might make sense to make. In short, the first step I think is in using open source software as much as you can, then from there you can find a project (or a set of projects) that you can work on. GitHub is one of my favorite places to shop for software. And even if you don't contribute to the project, pull down the code and make changes to see what you can do. It's a great way to explore writing code and having something you can use in your daily activities.
