    Thank you so much for this video. I have been thinking that I might have adhd for a while and was a bit reluctant to get diagnosed after hearing that adult diagnosis through nhs can take a long time which you did mention in this video. To find someone who attends the same university as me talk about this and especially the info about the support available at Warwick towards the end of the video was priceless tbh. Thank you for sharing

    I just got off the phone to my GP, they didnt seem convinced enough because my parents never recognised anything and it didnt crop up throughout my childhood (I’m an girl and i was always shy and just daydreamed my way through school though), she said it uust sound slike anxiety (which is only a fraction of what im struggling with. so im having to look at private one which i can barley afford because I need help in college. I almost failed sixth form if it wasnt for covid making us skip exams and I just feel like no one will listen to me. I even broke down on the phonecall to the gp because ive been trying to get that appointment for months. Sorry for such a long rant about myself but that phonecall just left me feeling so much more worse

    Request an appointment with another doctor at the practice. Prepare talking points for why it’s not just anxiety. Ask for parent/friend to be there for you and advocate. Better parent because they can say it started in childhood. Printout each symptom in the dsm and write examples next to each one.

    My daughter graduated from kings and at the age of 28 had a massive meltdown and was diagnosed with ADHD! She excelled in school but after years of masking it just came to a head then it became apparent that at the age of 46 I’ve now been diagnosed! We are both now medicated and it completely changed our lives 🙂

    I will be aged 44 in September. I had a nervous breakdown to get my ADHD detected, February 2020. I live in SE England. I received a diagnosis of ADHD in Birmingham, August 2020. The waiting time is 4 years using my local ADHD service. Privately, many psychiatrists would not assess me because I have dyspraxia and / or Aspergers traits. When I received my diagnosis of dyspraxia, May 2012, aged 33, my GP, would not accept my report . I had an NHS Aspergers traits assessment, February 2004, aged 25. I got a degree aged 20, 1999, Birmingham university, pgdip 2000. Age 8, I attended an assessment symptoms of dyspraxia and ADHD. Age 9, I attended an assessment symptoms of dyspraxia, ADHD and Aspergers traits. I had Concetra, treatment online . I got a shared care plan . Some GPs, will not accept a share care plan , there should be CBT, mindfulness, my psychiatrist mentioned exercise. My ADHD was missed because I was well behaved in school , intelligent and driven . The GPs, did not realise that adults can have ADHD.

    I've been told that my CCG doesn't accept private diagnoses. I was told the wait list for ADHD assessment is 2 years long. What I want to know is, if I get a private diagnosis, will the 'confirmation diagnosis' from the NHS still take 2 years or can they be quicker.

    As of May 2022 psychiatry U.K. have no appointments at all available until October 2022 (private or otherwise) and then those appointments go to those already on their waiting list. Also there is then a SIX MONTH wait for medication as they have a shortage of prescribers! They have been inundated sadly. Their charges are £30 pm prescription plus the medication costs can be up to £200pm. Sometimes GP’s won’t do shared care so check that FIRST and get it in writing! Otherwise you will be paying £200pm for life… it’s so bad here in the U.K. with adhd. And they wonder why people self medicate! 😳🙄🙄🙄

  • @katiegriffiths4938
    @katiegriffiths49382 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your comment. You are totally correct and Psychiatry UK are only taking right to choose patients on that waiting list. So going private with them isn't currently even an option. Do you mean that Psychiatry UK has a shortage of prescribers or do you mean the whole of England has? Is there a nation wide shortage of the meds?

  • @zarasbubble1748
    @zarasbubble17482 жыл бұрын

    Please check whether you are entitled to Free prescriptions. Certain medical conditions allow you to get a prescription exemption certificate so you go to the pharmacy and don’t pay nothing at all. If that doesn’t apply, you can pre-pay prescription and it costs a bit less. There is a calculator on the NHS website and many can qualify due to other conditions, pregnancy, age, benefits, etc

  • @zarasbubble1748
    @zarasbubble17482 жыл бұрын

    You don’t have to pay. I think the video didn’t explain it properly and I got confused for a second… Read the description as she explains it more. But basically there are two routes: Private where you pay and NHS where it is free. The difference used to be in speed. (I.e. going private used to be faster). I just asked for a referral and my GP referred me directly to Psychiatry UK (for free) but they are backed up really badly right now so waiting times are about 8-12 months! 😫😫 The only thing you may have to pay for is the prescription cost which is I think £12 a month for the medication. She has gone the private route, hence she had to pay for the assessment and medication until she went back to NHS care.

    @@musabaminullah oh I misread your age! (So ignore the part of waiting till 18!) I thought you were 17 already… if you’re still 16 then keep hounding them. Make a list of how the “suspected” ADHD is affecting your life. From friendships to school to home and the general quality of life. Read the checklist and base the list off of that (as GPS are more likely to be more receptive to that). Lastly, if this GP keeps ignoring you, ask your parents if they would consider changing GP, as an adult I’ve had to do this many times to get decent care.

    Hey. Just found myself wondering how come I try to be all organized because I know that my future goals and, as a matter of fact, my current ones require me to be really mindful about how I organize me in life. Sometimes I feel like I'm just lazy, however for a lazy person, I'm always engaged in new activities, something that affects me a lot because I essentially never finish nothing. It's funny the way how challeging activities affect me in a way that puts me in a state of superfocus and determination. I just need someone to dare my abilities and.... I'm on it. However, things that do not create the minimal interest to me as an individual while executing a current task or future can be quite challenging..actually they may be the things where I fail the most. Clumsiness can appear at any moment when I'm not interested, however when I'm interested or excited about something the opposite happens. It's hard to explain...

    I am a medical student in 2nd year and I really thing I am a high achiever with ADHD. I am not diagonised but the stress of med school made my hyerativity, inattentiveness, forgettfulness, disorganized nature more apparent. When I started searching for videos of how to become more organised, videos from people with ADHD connected to me the most. So it made me think, could I have ADHD? So I read a lot about how ADHD presents in women specifically and how it is usually diagnosis later in life for women. It could be that my self diagnosis is wrong but it makes the most sense. I am not an unmotivated person, I'm not stupid so I know something deeper must be going on.
