A Latin and Ancient History teacher by day, when I'm not at school I love talking about books! I primarily read adult Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I especially love swashbuckling adventure fantasy, Discworld, and military fantasy. Some of my current favorite series are The Greatcoats, the Books of Babel, The Black Company, and, of course, The City Watch Discworld novels.
I love challenges and games, though I rarely win these, so am forced to partake in horrible punishments. I'm much better at real-life board games.
I love the Lord, my wife, and my pets. I hope you enjoy your stay here at the Library!

Interestingly enough "So and do died" was always one of the parts that sold the world of Black Company to me. It's swift, vicious and fleeting. People don't get dramatic final moments there often. They just die, you - the reader - are sitting there surprised and buffled, and the Company moves on, because that's just life.
Thank you for the sprint Allen! Also, I loved Care Bears when I was little, but I was banned from watching them when I was 4. 😂
Love these sprints! What is the schedule for reading the Illiad and the odyssey? Will the discussions be on Yt or Discord? Thank you
It'll be on YT!
Thanks so much! I am looking forward to the discussion! Have a great weekend!
Very happy to hear your shoulder is healed! … and you are reading Locke Lamora 😂 ❤
Fun sprint Allen! The Care Bears and dinosaurs discussion were my personal favorites
Thank you so much for hanging out and commenting!
Wow I had no idea Adrian Tchaikovsky looked like that lol.
I absolutely LOVE baldurs gate 3. Best game ever. Who is your favorite character? I find astarion hilarious even if he is a bit emo lol 😆 karlack is pretty cool too. Will has to be the most boring by far
Professional authors wish they could have as great an emotional impact on me as being accidentally exposed to Darkeater Goatdir slander
Love to see it
Did part two ever happen? Don’t know which channel it was streamed on
If you think Stoner had a terrible life, ask yourself if he'd been better off returning to the farm as his family wanted and expected him to do. Williams also creates a bit of existential angst by showing that for most of us, our existence is only really felt by a very few people we've connected with deeply and forgotten by the many whose lives we pass through mostly unnoticed. For Stoner, I'm sure that Katherine will always feel his presence in some way.
Don't feel bad I was super rusty after 2 years as well. Awesome DLC though very well made. Absolutely stunning views. Elden Ring serves as great entry point for anyone playing a from soft game for the first time ever. Darksoul games never really appealed to me but Elden Ring changed my mind
I've loved them since Bloodborne! What build do you play, Chris?
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria primarily bleed which is good on like 90 percent of the game because of its high damage output but the only time it's not useful is against dang elden beast and Radagon. I hate those bosses more than anything lol 😆
I know you have the ranking of all the discworld watch books, are you planning to do individual reviews for thud and snuff?
this has zero business being this funny 🤣🤣🤣 bless Anitha
Half way through book 2 right now and it's a tough go. So boring and it reminds me of ready player one book 2. Hopefully it gets better. Not sure what the hype is about Sanderson yet. Maybe my mind will change as I read on.
Hilarious
I won't accept this RE5 slander. Best RE game.
No, it is not.
This was glorious
I think we all learned a lesson here today…
hahahahaha It never stops being funny😂😂
As as for the many things wrong with you.. we'll allow all the right stuff to outweigh it 😜
4 is my Goat and 2 then 1.
Have you ever read the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough?
i too remember when I learned how to read Allen, when Scarab Path lead me into enlightenment
Mr. Dad, YOU are an icon and an inspiration
surprised your favorite dragon is chromatic, Allen. no love for the bronze dragon and its electric breath?
I actually really like what Cook did with the character of Raven in the later books. He ends up as a deconstruction of the dark brooding assassin character. His refusal to work with others just ends uo making things a lot worse for a lot of people, and his emotional immaturity is highlighted and condemned by the person who knew him best. He's pretty competent, but not as competent as he believes himself to be and he coukd have been a lot happier and more successful if he were not so petrified of being interdependent with other people or having a relationship that wasnt entirely on his own terms. Granted you don't get a lot of it in thebfirst book, but some ofnit is there. Whole Raven left for a good reason that some people understood, his friends resented him for it and he might have had an easier time in the later books had he asked for some amount of help.
The bottom line with Dragon Age is that the original Bioware team is no longer making these games, so no...the writing is not as good and the direction has changed. It's a no from me, dog.
Alright, those Perhaps were INCREDIBLE, thank you very much for that, Allen. The Book That Wouldn't Bern and Which King are absolute perfection. Also, I love that Ben asked you to repeat the Swansong one, great job.
Agatha Christie is great. The far majority of her Poirot stories are fair play mysteries, where you have all the info before the solution is revealed. And even the ones where you don't, the way it is handled fits the story well, and is still entertaining without being frustrating. Mysterious Affair at Styles (the first Poirot) is definitely fair play.
"Merphy and Kyle already read it" wow I have truly made it
I don't even do many buddy reads and 90% of the buddy reads I do are with Alex and Jordan so what is this pre eye roll about Allen
Talking about pop culture references-- I'm listening to Guards Guards (Audible) and there's a few song lyrics in there from the late 80s. I don't know if id've picked'em up if i were reading instead of listening. the reader, Jon Culshaw, is very good. Bill Nighy reads the foot notes
wish the earth was flat, so I wasn't sleep every time you stream.
Knobby embracing his version of femininity was likely one of the FUNNIEST things i ever read. Like while listening the thought hit me (they're not going to do the cringe trope of a "a man in drag ew gross") and they kind of did play it straight and I just thought it was a cringe product of it's time. Ohhhh no, I was wrong because Knobby GENUNELY started to get offended and when he was banned from the pub because "no women allowed" and he was invited to speak to the other women and they all had a good time when he was rejected from doing so with other men strictly because he was a woman idk it was just a sweet moment I was happy for him. I get the impression the story is aware of easy "jokes" like that what would be expected but then decides to sit down and discuss it and call out its hypocrisy or stupidity. I only just started to get into the Discworld series recently but if this is the kind of writing I have to look forward to i think im going to be reading beautify literature for the next few years!
Thank you for sharing.
There is a a reason folks consider Spirit Island best with 2 or solo.
Wow, I actually got two of the perhaps questions. And your acotar one, but I thought it was a court of Joe and Donald 😆
Perhaps if you screamed more at the jump scare moments... 😁
Hahahahhahah
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria It looks like a fun game, but it's really dark, and I'm guessing the creatures can see your flashlight? I'm about 150 hours into a fresh playthrough of Fallout 4 but no one would watch me spend hours on end settlement building. Fighting a hermit crab using a tractor trailer for a shell might be different though... 😁
Doom: The Dark Ages...and perhaps Fable...may make up for Dragon Age appealing to Fortnite players. And I know the song you are humming, those damn seagulls...
Yesssss!
Do you mean valour?
I’m reading this a second time and it’s one of the few I’ve enjoyed even more the second time. The nuance and complexity is just so satisfying while being so grounded in characters more like real people.
You should read Circe
Just finished this game. So good and very terrifying👍
Thank you so much for This❤ i just finished reading the book and i dont know anyone else who has read it to talk about it! This was so rewarding!
Philopoemen, the guy who wrote the Golden Compass AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Love this review, and Assaye was such an awesome battle set piece. You should definitely keep going with Farley Sharpe audiobooks when you need a great listen!
Celtic..
I remember your excitement about this book from way back when which convinced me to buy this book, and now years later I've finally just read and finished it, and it was great! I loved how so many familiar tropes and archetypes were presented and used, only to be twisted or turned on their heads, and the swamp was absolutely an amazing character. Emily was a wonderful main and central character and I appreciated how she both evolved but also remained true to her essence. And you know, that final section/act reminded me of when I read The Sword Of Kaigen; both books dealt so well with aftermath! Thanks again and hope you and family are well!
I know it's been two years, but thank you so much for doing this Allen, it was so wonderful so watch, thank you for keeping book jeapordy, it is the best part of booktube to date! I hope you and your wonderful wife are having a beautiful summer!
I‘ve actually already got a rough idea of what order I‘d like to read Discworld in, but some further ideas can only be beneficial! Not like I‘m gonna start anytime soon anyway, since it‘s behind Wheel of Time on my TBR… xD To be more specific, I‘ve based my order around some criteria. First, having read the cosmere, I know how much more fun a book can be if you get the internal references to interconnected books. So I want to read it in an order that allows me to get as many of these as possible. Second, however, I do not want to read it in publishing order. Not only is that boring (lol), but I‘ve also been warned by numerous voices to not start with Colours of Magic. Third, I want to have a satisfying ending. From what I’ve seen, that means ending on Shepherd’s Crown, but also reading the end to Rincewind and Lipwig after City Watch. And, fourth and as much as possible while yielding to the first three, I want to read each subseries in one piece, without interruptions. That then lead to the following order: Pyramids, then Small Gods. Yes, you do not like Pyramids, but from what you shared it seems like the kinda book I would like and, well, even if it’s a poor start, the Discworld books are rather short, so I‘ll be at the fan favourite Small Gods soon enough anyway. Afterwards: Death. I‘m excited for this one. Next up: City Watch, up until Fifth Elephant. It seems to lead into The Truth from here which, in turn, leads back into Night Watch, so pause here and continue with: Rincewind until Sourcery, and Eric. Eric seems to slot in between Sourcery and Interesting Times, and feeds into: Moving Pictures, which also then feeds into: The Truth, finally. But before heading back to the Watch, I‘ll read: Monstrous Regiment, which feeds into Thud, so once I‘ve read this I can continue from: Night Watch, finishing City Watch without further interruptions. The rest is simple, I‘ll continue with: Interesting times, reading the rest of Ryncewind and slotting in: The Last Hero before Unseen Academicals, finishing Rincewind and leaving me to continue with: Moist von Lipwig, the entire story. This concludes the urban half of Discworld stories, so now the only thing left is: Witches, all if it, followed by: Maurice, which seems to feed into: Tiffany Aching, where I finally get my satisfying ending.
Allen! I laughed so hard when you called Evie out on her sunburn. 🤣 😂 😂😂😂 'What is this? Is this a new bit you're doing?' 😂😂 Hilarious. (Sorry, Evie ❤)
