Allan McKay

Allan McKay

Are you a Creative? Then: YOU ARE A BUSINESS!

My name is Allan McKay. As a creative, my ultimate goal is to eliminate the "starving artist" mentality that so many of us have. To not use the "struggle" as an excuse, and instead embrace that we are running a business. We are in this for the win! We have to give it everything we've got to make it in this world -- and in our careers.

I've been working in Hollywood in Visual Effects for over 20 years and I've had many successes. But my biggest success is watching the growth the students in my mentorship and in my courses have; the people that email me saying they've landed their dream job or negotiated the pay they deserve. Or, they've negotiated to work from home, launched a business -- all of the amazing things they do. All the amazing things YOU DO!

I'm eager to build a KZread Channel to share the content previously only available to those in my students and inner circle. I always say: You gotta be in it to win it!

LET'S LEVEL UP!

I really like Mr. Ball, he seems so down-to-earth, forthright and friendly. I'm a big fan of his work on TMR, too. They're really, really good films and, actually, quite deep.

The only thing that matters is who is the most skilled/talented/resourceful/knowledgeable/hardworking/experienced/etc. In other words: MERIT. Everything else is just people pretending for the sake of 'THE MESSAGE'. This is cult behaviour and mentality, and it is disastrous for the future success of the western world. People keep going on about why we have to force 'diversity' into everything, but they can never tell you WHY?

I never noticed the limitations these movies worked with that are only apparent frame by frame with a very critical eye. So much wizardry and foundational stuff to make something we take for granted now. It still holds up.

How is that the same person from the behind the scenes Matrix documentaries? He looks so different. Wow. This is maybe going to sound a bit mean, and I swear I don’t intend it that way, but I thought due to the feminine name and his disposition at the time that Kim, circa 1999-2003 was a more masculinish female. In the BTS Matrix stuff He had a super high voice with a more cherub like appearance. Then I read the Cinefex article on the Matrix movies & was like no, no Kim is a guy. And now here he is, 20+ years later and his hair is like waaaaaaay different, his voice waaay deeper, some good ol stubble. I couldn’t believe it was the same person. Time is a crazy thing

Great discussion. The next wave of storytellers will be a lot more used to the tools, and take advantage of the tools, but it does come back to working with a great team, and passionate people. While the tools and tech are amazing, it is the people, their connection and skill that is the heart of storytelling. Awesome. Thanks Allan and Kim

Man I agree. The thing that really bothers us is the emotional pain we take. some people are hard as rocks but the majority isn't and whenever they get discomfort they cry, yell or quit in rage. Pretty sure if you take away the emotional pain from a person they would be crazy enough try again and again to until they succeed.

It happened the same to me. When I was in my 20's, I just looked at my belly button. It was all about me, my professional development and my ambitions. Once I reached my 30's and beyond, suddenly the most important thing was my nephew, watch him grow and having memories together. My partner, my friends, my family... It's cold out there. It suddenly becomes so hard to be sorounded by people who actually don't know me and that naturally don't care about me. Every day. On a city or country where I don't know anyone. And to think that the studios ask that from me: just move from one place to another. I can't do that anymore. So remote work becomes the only reason why I'm still working on this industry. Everyone is different though.

As someone who has been a fan of Wes Ball for a long time but is only just seeing this after dropping out of film school due to a disability and financial problems, this is INCREDIBLY inspiring. I've been struggling with wondering if I'll ever be able to go into film or make my own films, but hearing from my favorite director that its OKAY to fail just like... turns my doomsday perspective on its head. Thank you for posting this.

I made a video you can search for it but it’s called 20 years of failure or something like that. Might be worth checking out. I was excited to give this talk because we all think everyone else had it easy and that first job was easy. But there’s constant failure and rejection until there isn’t. Just we never get to see that from other people so we think it’s just us that is going through it. It’s definitely ok to fail, it’s part of the process. But sticking with it is everything. Thank you for sharing, actually planning to reach out to Wes about doing another episode now apes is out!
