Hi Josie, only just stumbled on your video as I was searching for just this, bringing a horse back into work after a LONG break. I have a 14 yo TB ex racer (OTT since a 3 yo but used as a race training yard lead horse and nanny horse for 6 yrs) who has been out of work due to a multitude of health issues for 2 yrs and prior to that was a field ornament for another 2 so out of work for 4 in total! I've got my work cut out. Any advice on how to achieve just a happy hacker from this will be much appreciated. Definitely want to see more of Ava's progress. She's a beauty! X

Improve your canter how? There are many ways to improve your canter. I'mlooking for more uphill. With this horse I recommend improving hks physical shape (unless he is very old) Ride him for longer and longer periods in the field extending and shkrtening until it doesn't look as hard. That's just my opinion, but who am I? Thank you for the video. P.s. Also sit back more.

This was really useful. I'm not subtle enough in the use of my own body, understanding of my energy, nor understanding of the horse's energy either. I guess I end up shouting at them, a bit like shouting at someone in a foreign language when neither of you understand the other (and I wouldn't do that to a person so why to a horse?!). Thanks for this Josie, this is really helpful!

  • @BasicHorseTraining

We all need to remind ourselves not to "yell". Especially when the horse is not understanding us. We also need to remind ourself to watch for the slightest cue that the horse is trying to do wha we want. Practice makes us all better. 😊

Thank you so much, this is super helpfull! I ride scool horses and my trainer says the horse falls out of canter to trot because i don’t support him enough with my legs.I always try to keep my legs soft and long so this comment confuses me a lot. He also says i have to push more into the styrrup? Can you shine your genius light on this please? I am really confused and don’t know what to do with these comments. My trainer is a proud spanish man with quite a temper so he gets a bit agitated when I don’t understand…. Thank you so much

Mine does not go softly because I don't know what I am doing with my body. I want mine to go off of just my energy but understanding my energy and how to use it is where I am at. I look at my horse for feedback because her communication tells me where I am messing up. Do you know a good book that explains energy and how to use it?

I'm curious why you needed another horse there. You seemed to do well on your own. My horse goes out in two weeks to a trainer and ONE reason I chose her is she hacks young horses out alone all the time. I always ended up hacking alone it seems. For me, my young horse must be comfortable with that.

I found this extremely helpful and started working with a young horse (not mine) he doesn't respond to a tap on the side, only on the flank (or my body posture). I find this very odd but he starts getting frustrated if I try against his side and offers other (trained) behaviours (which have been trained with the whip).

Riding has always been my dream and my family can now afford it so I started riding about 9 months ago, its been such an exciting journey and this video helped so much, I've been struggling with the canter for a while now and I'm a visual learner that also has to be told exactly what I'm looking to feel, etc. this really helps and I hope to implement this in my next lesson, everything makes a lot more sense now. thank you!

Our adopted wild burro has helped me be so much softer with the riding horses. He was untouched and off the desert range. He is not stubborn but he really likes to have a long think about everything. So, I ask him to do something, softly hold the aid, then count to myself. He takes to a count of 10 or 60. Then he complies. Started counting with my horses. At first, it took to a count of 10, now it is a 2 or 4. The counting helps me be patient while waiting for them to process and think. Plus, it helps me see tangible improvements. I include that Burro as one of my best teachers. I love all your videos, you are very generous to share your skills and insights with us. Thank you, and my equines thank you, too!

Great video, though I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for my mare and me. She has a tendency to spook coming out of the corner on the short side and will run. Change of direction is difficult as it's right on the corner and I'm not sure how responsive she would be to a downward transition even if i was able to get the timing just right. I don't think an upwards transition would be helpful as she tends to be worse when we're moving faster. Any suggestions?

  • @TonyaClement1

I have a very sensitive and intelligent young mare. She learns everything quite quickly. She has done all the basics stuff on the groun at first and on long lines. As I started ridings she offers to go all the way at the slightest aid. I.e. if its turn on the forehand she won't stop at one step and one leg aid, she will keep going for another few until my opposite leg really shouts out to her 😅..then she can get stroppy that she didnt get it right so i refocus her on something esle. The same with rein back, only now I manage to get her to listen and stop at the couple of steps i have actully asked for - she'd be quite happy offering me 4-6 steps at the slightest aid. Ended up going right back to basics again. Now we have a different problem, we moved yards and the school/arena is huge - she plays up quite a bit since the spring grass is giving her jitters. Its so frustrating to have had a mare than was a golden child become a naughty one and having to come back a few steps and make relaxed in the school not come in there with expectation of imaginary monsters jumping out at her. Any further advice you could give? 😊 thanks

This is a great explanation on an important topic, thank you! My question is, how do you start introducing to a young horse like the first one, to be able to differentiate when you may have high energy, big or fast movements but not targeted to her, to not react to it? I may be wrong, but seeing that little jump from the young horse got me thinking that the horse may not be calm if children are being loud, or if you move fast for a different reason, or if a sudden situation comes up on a trail ride.

Very good. I have just changed my approach to a three-year-old brumby gelding that I'm starting. He has more whoa than go and even though he stops all the time, I'm not going to push any more because we're just not getting anywhere. I'm breaking it down; asking, waiting patiently and rewarding him when he makes the slightest move.
