Remember that when this mare reacted, it was a reflex. You can do everything in your power to prepare her for this but sometimes it still happens.

You are simply amazing with your teaching very organized material. Which some have too many things to think about and you are doing one thing each video I love that especially when I'm out in the arena it's hard to remember everything so I'm finding these videos you create easy to remember. I will also say I've watched many videos and I love your assertive, calm and loving attention to each detail I'm sure the horses are thrilled to be a part of your life, if I were a horse I'd be very happy to learn from you❤

Question, how do you teach moving the shoulder on the ground? Is it just the basics with pressure and release or are you incorporating using the reins?! To then she realized the rein aid when your under saddle to move shoulder… Thanks, hope you see this!

I really appreciate that you worked with her about getting on both sides. So many people only mount from the left side but I also like my horses to do anything I ask from both sides.

My heart was beating a million miles an hour as she spooked! Fantastic job of sticking on. That one rein stop is really a life saver in high energy spooks. My filly years ago really gave me a run for my money, we were on a trail that I'd rode her on perhaps a dozen times at that point and one day the large white boulder for some reason really spooked her good even though she'd seen it plenty before. My instinct was to pull that rein in and get her nose to me, we did a few spins (the spin pulled me back in the saddle, she about sent me ten feet sideways!) and she calmed down in about 30 seconds. Let her sniff the boulder and told her she must have the memory of a Clark's Nutcracker. Then off back to the trailer we went. She'd performed fantastically in the corrals and didn't spook for many of the first 'away from home' rides. But it's always something small and insignificant that seems to get them the first couple of times. Of course, when a sage grouse gooses them in the belly unexpectedly... Well that's an event I haven't stayed in the saddle for. And I can't blame them, I sure get just as spooked as they do when the feathers and screeches start up.

I watched the spooking a couple of times, and to me it seems like, she was relaxed when you touched her behind for a good second, and then suddenly your hand was on her neck. I think she was just so relaxed, that it spooked her, when the hand came out of nowhere. You can absolutely correct me, if that's wrong :) I'm a new follower and from what I've seen, I absolutely love your content!

My first ride under saddle with a rope halter went nice. She pointed to my hanging feet for me to put my feet in the stirrup. Smart mare. God bless horse's.

I love how this ring has no traffic anywhere within eyeshot or earshot, so there's no need to be afraid of a startle from cars.

Great job. Notice that 1 reign stop was initiated a 1 sec before it really started. That “feel” is everything. If you wait to pull that reign when there’s a head of steam then you’re going to have a wreck. You may have one reign in your hand as you both cartwheel forward. Please all you young riders, if you’re uncomfortable shut it down. Live to play another day.

I really like your soothing voice and reassurance when the horse became frightened. I always talk in a quiet soft voice to my horses as well as our class horses. Several people have remarked how the horses respond to me. I saw you doing this and I started. Definitely a wonderful way to connect and bond with these beauties.

@dariaharruff7025 most horses are not mean. Those that have been mistreated can be. Time and patience can turn them around. They also have an awesome sense of people. If you are timid or afraid, they know it. One time I went into a stall to clean it. Not knowing this horse was aggressive. Next thing I know my girlfriend owned the barn and said, why are you in there? That horse bites and will kick. My thoughts were I didn't act fearful so she was fine. After that I never went in with her again. You just need to read the horse and respect them.

Great work. I like your gentle approach but at the same time you were ready to command the situation and offer your encouragement to her for when she panicked. Many times horses need to just let it out. This is the nature of the creature. It's inevitable. You kept calm, let her deal with her anxiety and rode the little storm with her and were calm. Good show!

Let’s get you a real mounting block, Josie. I love my 3 step mounting block. Very sturdy and puts me higher than the milk crate. I’m about to get my horses off the back burner. thank you for the motivation.

Why are training horses with dumb bits bits should be out lawed if not I'm quitting on horses I'm done with them they make me feel like a loser they're the reason I hate horse riding I was forced to ride a horse with a stupid bit it's the horses fault they made me do it

I like your video

The minute your hands were off her front, ie stroking her hindquarters, you were off balance, she knew it, and she took advantage. Some horses are like that. Always looking for the opportunity. I rode a mare like that for years, she got me off once, and I broke my arm. Always had to keep my eyes peeled for possible "spook" (or excuse) material, and she had to know where I was at all times, or else. Horses live in the moment, and sometimes you're not in the moment with them. That could have been so much worse, that was a fairly nasty spook. I'd prefer to keep both hands up front, light contact with mouth, and make sure she knows that you're balanced and in place. Good seat you've got - kept you in place.

Hi Josie it’s brilliant to watch how you progress them so quickly. Thanks for sharing with us I have used many of your tips in starting my boy who is three years three months .Any more tips on walk trot transitioning would be great as I know not to try trot on a straight line . My boy is a big horse and can be sharp but I need to be moving on from the walk and have basic steering after five rides

Even though I heard her say it, I see no reason to not trot in a straight line. Why not? I wonder where you and she heard that? It makes no sense at all! Please tell me why. I also see no reason not to trot, if all is going good at a walk. She trotted this horse in this video. I thought it was a little soon for this horse, on the 1st ride, but not a huge deal. Of course you have already taught him to trot, and to slow down, and to stop, by doing the related groundwork first, right? And I assume you have also done a lot of desensitizing to every possible type of stimulus that could scare him. As long as those are true, and your tack is in good working order, then just go ahead. It sounds like your own confidence is a bit shaky. He might sense that. But you just have to learn to trust each other. Continue with every new type of desensitization you can find, and groom and ride him every chance you get. Twice a day if possible. Please don't forget to tell me why you and she both think you shouldn't trot them in a straight line. Thanks very much!

I watched 12:25 several times, a few times at .25 speed just to really watch how you held your seat for this spook. I literally become amnestic and 'come to' across the arena (woken up by the thud of my own sack of potatoes hitting the ground). 1) Could staying present in a spook be learned? How to overcome the psychological preservation response of dropping out of awareness? 2) Could you talk about how to stay in the seat - I can imagine you're not exactly thinking in those moments, rather that it is automatic from years of muscle memory but Id like to know what goes through your head in a small or challenging spook?

I don't start any horse under the age of 3. I start my own at 3 end of summer beginning of autumn. They have a 8 week start (or whatever they need) but then I like to turn them out for winter for a rest and to grow and think about what we did. Then I bring them back in as a four year old and they start from there.

I just want to add to these videos that Horses should have an option to be ridden or not be ridden. If your horse doesn’t mind being ridden then obviously it’s giving you their permission. I just wanna say that riding a horse is a privilege and not owed to anyone. (This is totally unrelated but I just wanted to share my opinion,now it’s alright if you don’t agree with me but reading their body language is a great thing to do to prevent being thrown off,now if you are a terrible rider, a very green horse will buck you off or worse) In response to this video is I really love how she goes about training this mare to have a human on her. ❤amazing job she’s doing ❤

Good preparation! To do it step by step and the horse has all the time to watch what you do is the key. Confidence is the basis. I would not tap by touching her with your hands everywhere, just rub. Horses don’t tap each other. If you control the hindquarters, you control the whole horse. Let her make some rounds without disturbing the head position and her mood to get forward at the beginning at the gait she choses. If she wants to stand still, ok. It’s up to her to make the choice. Some horses would prefer this way to get accustomed to the weight on the back. Never pull the reins. Galloping some moment is ok. She will stop soon. Question: Did you chase her around with the saddle on before? I put a side pull not to cause pain.

You need a real mounting block!!!
