If Bachmann solely sold direct to customers at the trade price, no retailers, the model would be 40% cheaper. Other start up compaines have a massive advantage in being able to choose between manufacturing plants in China at competetive prices per production run, and then sell that model direct, with barely any overhead cost involved. Bachmann have their own factory who can charge what they want as there are no competitors, and an established dedicated office with many employees who all have to be paid at the end of the day. Unfortunately it is no longer 2010 when Chinese labour cost was a fraction of what it is today, and calls for accurate models requiring mutiple tooling options means higher prices. Like you said, prices will eventually come down but it would be unsustainable for Bachmann to churn everything out at a low cost, risking the business failing.

@@IronHorseRailways it does vary of course, but the trade prices that Bachmann sells to retailers is usually in that ball park. That’s why retailers can discount something like a new 37 from £244 down to £160 and still make a small profit. Now imagine there was no retailer, Bachmann could sell that from new at £160 and make a decent profit from whatever the cost per item from the factory is!

@@IronHorseRailways true and that’s not ideal, but there is simply not an economical way to lower prices across the board. Yes for some models like the 31 it makes sense to have an artificially lowered price to compete with another manufacturer, but you can’t do that for every new tooling otherwise they can’t make any money! At the end of the day prices are set for what Bachmann thinks that model is worth and this 08 is packed to the rafters with new features. And trust me, I’ve seen one and it’s amazing what has been stuffed into a tiny model.

Trade margin is 30% at best. Certainly not 40. All that happens is shops are forced to drop 15% to make prices palatable and try survive on a paltry 15% margin.

I'm an accountant and a few years ago I did some work for a preserved railway. They bought ex BR class 03 shunters for £15 each. Working with a full tank of diesel! Prices like this for models are truly bonkers. Who has the money for these?

Sadly Bachman isn't the only one raising their prices. Hornby emailed me today with some bad news that they are increasing their prices. But its not over for for cheaper model trains. We have many options. Hold out for a sale like I am going to that is the first choice. The second option is to stick with pre-owned models that are more than suitable for enjoyment. The third option is to consider indie brands like Accurascale, Rapido Trains etc that give better value back to the public. We have a choice. I do O gauge nowadays and I have a handful of OO and N gauge that keeps me going as I will use the latter for taking to friends layouts etc.

I've started buying cheap used wagons from model shops and repainting them now because £30+ for a 00 gauge coal wagon is ridiculous; I could understand if you specified what number, livery, weathering etc you wanted but for something mass produced is just daft. If only more 3d printed stock that was designed to fit generic chassis was available with little modification needed, I think I'd stop buying new stock altogether.

Apparently Hornby is about to raise their prices by 12%, so when inflation is only 2% I wish that the hobby could create a national and even international boycott of new models, and buy good secondhand models. These companies feel that they have a licence to print money and take the piss out of us all in the hobby. It is about time we all stood up and shout, NO MORE. I for one will no longer buy new models from anyone unless a good discount is applied

It is utter crap , (being polite ) about it we in the model railway hobby are getting ripped off , right , left n centre with prices for our hobby. You need a second mortgage now , for the price of locos , coaches , wagons track etc etc . Bachmann , Hornby , what like don’t give a toss about the normal punter with the prices that they are charging for locos etc , the same on the 2nd hand market likes of EBay and such like . It’s only going to be those , and such as those people that can afford the top price , to pay for new models . And pensioners , and young ones need all there hard earned cash , to try n save a little to buy something new if possible. It’s about time we took a stand , and said enough is enough with your prices , n if they don’t like it tough 🤬🤬🤬🤬. 10% retailer discount is £189 or thereabouts, so at a 20% discount that makes £168 which in my view is much better. I'm in the process of DCC-ing at the moment (Powercab ~£150 brought directly from the USA - does mean I need a UK power adaptor though) so once you think 168 plus chip = around £250. 168 plus sound chip is roughly £270 -£280 so maybe the best option would be DCC ready loco plus the chips separately during the Black Friday or January Sales as then you'd get the 20% or even a little bit more discount plus it gives time to save up.
