"The End" For 'Big' Exhibitions? | Keighley Model Railway Show 2024! | Iron Horse Weekly ep85

Ойын-сауық

After visiting the Keighley show this weekend, and having such a great time there -, it's got me thinking that maybe the 'big shows' aren't all they're cracked up to be!
some excellent layouts here, great atmosphere too!🙂🙂

Do enjoy more local shows. Layout guys seem more able to chat as are the traders, often local guys too, plus don’t miss the hand to hand combat when trying to browse for something to buy. Regularly go to a show in Bushey near Watford (South Herts show?) plus the Tolworth Showtrain near where I live in South West London. Mind you, my brother and I are going to the London Festival at Alexandra Palace this weekend so going large! Mind you, many, many pubs on the way home through Central London… what could possibly go wrong!?

I admit I do like the smaller shows. Big props to you for a shout out to the young fella and showing a little bit of his layout. As much as I like to see the big complex layouts. Its always makes me smile to see the kids with their own layouts, just having fun. That little shout out in your video would have him chuffed to bits. Thats how we encourage the new generation. 👍

Thanks for featuring Newton Grove on your video. For its first ever exhibition it ran really well. I’m just glad it survived the long journey from Australia when I moved over in 2022. You’ll love O gauge if you get into it. Be warned though; it’s highly addictive.

An excellent review of a tremendous show. I talked to the young man and his dad for quite a while; he was very knowledgeable and had a lovely back-story about his layout that I really liked. Shame I missed you. The quality of the layouts was superb, the setting fantastic, and the overall atmosphere was great. Thank you for sharing.

The NEC for any show is expensive now especially after the council sold it to private investors. At least at the Statfold shows there are chances if the halls get busy to go for a ride on the trains.

Some lovely layouts there at Keighley model show, I deffo agree about being able to see all the layouts at the smaller model railway exhibitions. The hand of god seems to appear everytime I'm filming or photographing layouts at exhibitions lol. Also a model shop with a cafe? Now we're talking here. :)

Yes, you are right about a shop having a cafe, it really is a must when out shopping. Our local town has about 15,000 cafes up and down the high street. It's great, you can go into one shop, then a cafe, then into another shop and into two more cafes, then into Greggs, then into another cafe, then Primark, then a cafe, then another shop and a cafe, then call into the Spoons and another cafe etc etc. It's nice to know that the shop keepers are keeping up with what we really need in our shops and high streets. I don't feel like I've done any shopping unless I've eaten at least 25 different cafes in one afternoon. Big up for the cafes.

Thanks for showing us the great layouts. There are a number of good small local exhibitions around here in the south east. I must admit I mainly go to the exhibitions to see the manufacturers that attend as well as some of the layouts interest me. That’s not to say I don’t like all the exhibits. Now that model shops around here are getting few and far between, it’s the only time you get to see stuff before you buy and are able to talk to the manufacturers. I think small exhibitions are better than large ones as you get more of them through the year. If it’s just large exhibitions then there would probably be fewer and not so accessible to the majority of modellers. I don’t have the financial means to go to the really large exhibitions anymore, so for me they are pointless. The other thing with exhibitions is that you sometimes come across items from small companies that you wouldn’t know about. Long live the clubs exhibitions.

Nice video Craig. Cant beat the smaller exhibitions, used to go the one at Rochdale town hall back in the late 90's , terrific venue for a model railway exhibition & the trade etc. Wigan when it was at the college was a good one, ive never been to Warley, pointless exercise spending all that money . Manchesters was good, went to a fantastic one at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in the 80's , a truly superb place to have a model railway exhibition. The small exhibitions are the life blood of the hobby, the big ones might get all the press etc , but i think they lack something & the smaller ones tend to have more interesting layouts. Going to the exhibitions was always about getting the paint / transfers - nameplates needed as Mike - Fox Transfers would always have a stand & it was a cost effective way of getting the stuff & to have a chat with him about what he had in the pipeline, secondhand gear always threw up some suprises. Making a offer for stuff, brought back the phone call i had with a guy in Coventry,in 1996 in one issue of Railway Modeller there was a advert for a warehouse find of Jouef Mk3a coaches, all boxed / brand new condition, so i rang him up to enquire about a price & he said , how much do you think they're worth, i was bit surprised at that , so i said £6.50 each ,to which he replied that was a fair offer & 13 of them duly arrived. Was talking to one of the guys at Tower Models here in Blackpool about 0 gauge & how theyve seen a big shift to the scale, people trading in their 00 to move to 0, people wanting more bang for their buck. Used to go on holiday to Bournemouth in the 80's & Bournemouth Model Centre used to do all the 0 gauge brass kits, cabinets full of them & it does show how the scale has gone more mainstream with the rtr stuff & the sheer amount of stuff made. Just shows how a bit of bravery from manufacturers to make rtr can kick start wider appeal.

See the weekend gone i to went to a small show local to me in Redditch and that was also great to visit. Some decent layouts present both from the club and visiting as well including Hackworth colliery layout. There were also some interesting layouts one was a industrial layout that used pretty accurate period town and industrial setting sounds to the 1960's-1970's era it was based on, another layout was a box layout which had a 00 gauge line with a DMU shuttling over a viaduct and a town scene below with a 009 layout passing through it on on loop with a TV screen that played on a cycle different weather and time cycles. The cycles were daytime, thunderstorm evening sunset, night time with added fireworks display.

Great video. Good to see so much O guage in action - one disappointment from GETS last year that there wasn't anything. For most of us I think O guage is just so expensive/space hungry that it's really good to see the experts' creations. I feel sorry for any Class 20 fans that missed this show, they seemed to be cropping up everywherre!
