The best piece of advice I was ever given related to model railways was "ignore the rivet counters, the only person who has to like your layout is you". They don't have to look at it, you do, so do what makes you happy. And if you want to have a model railway that runs American, Aussie, British, German, Japanese and anything else that makes you happy... do it! And if you do want to shut the rivet counters up, it's easy "I'm modelling a fictional railway preservation museum, so what relevance does the prototype have to this?"

Totally agree about gatekeepers. I had a train set when I was younger but had a dream of building a layout. Now I am a pensioner that's what I am doing. It so far has grown from a table top to spare bedroom and is moving into the loft! It's going to be good enough for me and my grandchildren to enjoy. It's fun! The rivet counting purists have their place but I won't be joining them as I will be too busy playing trains!

I had this feeling many years ago, over 30 to be honest, pre internet. I joined a club because I wanted to be a part of something, to be able to share, except some of the members would only build brass kits locomotives and stock, EM or S4/P4 gauge, at the time I was on a budget, a young family so couldn’t afford such luxury modelling. My own buildings were budget, mostly scratch built from raw, simply because I couldn’t afford it. In the club time, it felt elitist, as if only a few particular modellers could actually build something that was going to go on the layout, plus the atmosphere felt cliquey. I only lasted a few visits, and never bothered again. As someone on this thread said, RMweb is full of gatekeepers, and the feeling came back to me in an instant. Sometimes, I want to run my Triang Dock shunter, the one that never existed, I remember getting mocked for fitting finer scale wheels on a Jinty, but I wanted to run that old loco on modern track (at that time) the model slowly morphed over the years anyway, it did become a nicely detailed Johnson 1f.

I went through exactly the same thing many years ago ,thought I would join the local model railway club and felt very alienated, and as you say there was a definite clique, after a couple of weeks I stopped going ,as a beginner I felt completely out of my depth, I am retired now and want to start my first railway ,I think I will manage on my own through watching KZread channels, even though there is a club not far away from me , And honestly ! ,the individuals on line who put down everything people do just get a kick out of it I think, they probably haven't even got a model railway or the skills involved to make anything except bad remarks, I have had various hobbies in my life time and you always get someone who has done it all and actually done nothing ,

@@colinhenry3551 I can understand various perspectives of a clique, one where you see an established group of modellers, maybe having known each other for decades, with a newcomer seeing them as intimidating, maybe with a little of an inferiority complex, maybe a little anxious, nobody wants to learn anything when there’s an element of snobbery there. It makes me wonder if model Railway clubs should do some kind of tutorials, not necessarily working on their layouts, but maybe where a complete novice could build a railway related diorama, or structure of their own choosing, with assistance and advice. All I have ever experienced, and like you, is alienation. At the moment I have no layout, just a test track, a small 18” square diorama, and built, finished detailed models waiting placement on a layout, and display cases with OO gauge locos and stock. I’ve had a 20 year gap, I tried getting into 18.83 gauge, but found it extremely time consuming, temperamental too, difficult to get good running.

A while back, on a forum, the suggestion was that models might come in three 'levels' (kind of like Hornby's Railroad range), something like 'Standard', 'Enhanced Detail' and 'Super Detail'. Instantly people claimed that the highest level of detail should be labelled "Expert" - but what is "Expert" about having more money than someone else, there's no expertise involved in spending money! There lies the crux of the matter - egos.

Once again Craig you raise so many vaild points. The hobby has always had a elitism problem, that mainly stemmed from model railway clubs & Railway Modeller / Model Railway Constructor magazine. The hobby via its press has always only celebrated one end of the spectrum, i once asked Chris Leigh why they never showcased peoples layouts at home & his reply was that the magazines had to be aspirational, the layouts shown where something to apsire to. Then when Model Rail was launched they started with the layouts that never leave home section, & again it followed the well worn path of model railway club modelling but just in peoples houses etc , again pushing only the stuff that was deemed aspirational. In essence the model press only really serves about 5% of the hobby. Whats ruining the hobby now weve entered the age of social media? no 1 - 'Detail' , the most overused word in existence. For years & years in the 80's / early 90's the cry was why cant we have models as good as the stuff made in HO for continental europe , 2 reasons why not , Hornby had no money & Riko Int who specified Limas range said the UK market would not stomach the considerably higher prices & so the duopoly of basic gear continued. Then Bachmann entered the fray taking up where Mainline left off utilising the cheaper labour costs & far east tooling innovations, that said the Germans & Austrians still produce better models on mainland europe. So the arms race began , starting the process of cramming as much onto models as humanly possible & with it aiming for older / wealthier clients & here we are with a new arms race of the new entrants & the new gods of dcc - automation / sound / museum quality & weathering., the latest one is the ever increasing use of magnets. A new facet also appearing of sacking P4 & EM gauge off & reworking the track by respacing the sleepers. As Pete Watermann stated you dont need to bother doing the models up because theyre that good , so you spend all your time instead building a layout to run them on & a new elitism has taken hold on social media with this approach. While all the while, a underground movement is taking hold thats a standing rebuke to this , running anything & everything & putting some fun back into the hobby. As the costs of the new models has risen , people turning to the older offerings to satisty their wishes. The model press blind to it , facebook etc split into distinct camps of 'serious modellers' & those that buy what they like & to hell with it. You are seeing the elitism in full play with Bachmann , how all the features / gimmicks are only on the hi spec models , the classic line of Rolls Royce models at Rolls Royce prices. Doesnt get more elitist than that, same with Hornbys reimagined dublo range. I have read & heard some pearlers over the years. When Bachmann announced the new class 47 retool, one person said that these models would appeal only to serious modellers, i asked him what constitutes a serious modeller, the reply being those who have exhibition layouts. One prominent youtuber proclaiming that his layout demanded only the best models could be used on it , again we get back to this notion of aspiration, driven by detail , setting the standard, that only the top end gear is worthy to run on their layouts. As youve probaly noticed with the fanfare with the Cavalex class 56 & the resultant adoration , its like anyone who has the Hornby or Mainline one is now a social outcast. Had this with the Accurascale class 37 & again we get to another big issue with the hobby 'Hype'. Never have we been so bombarded with hype , the 3d cad renders , the engineering protoype, the production sample, the decorated samples, the magazine youtube waffle love in's again breeds the elitism / apsiration fed by detail & hype of how detailed the detail is. Which of course soon means nothing when the loco wont stay on the rails or the motors jacked it in. The Gatekeeping of knowledge, funny one is that. I suppose back in the 70's, 80's & 90's we where blessed by so many great books, as a modern image modeller , the Janes Rail portfolio series , BR colour album / BR in colour where just the best resource, buying books was a integral part of the hobby, be it the BR Fleet survey series by Brian Haresnape, C J Marsdens traction guides, The David Gibbons stockspot feature from BR's Railnews magazine that Ian Allan published into 2 fantastic books, i still have them all , the OPC Profile books of the deltics, class 50's etc, some of my favourites to read was O S Nocks 'Two Miles A Minute' , Brian Haresnapes BR: A Journey By Design 1948-1983, the book on class 47 diesels, the fantastic hand drawn cut aways / engineering drawings which i used to try & copy as a boy & which led me to becoming a technical illustrator albeit on CAD. Is buying railway books still a big thing, do modellers have librairies at home to call upon anymore? Again is that a elitist thing? Got to say KZread & google images are a godsend these days for new projects to research etc, I dont get to travel about by rail much these days , in years gone by i was never off the railways , the photography , models & books just went hand in hand in building up the knowledge base. Have we all got lazier - unintentionally dumbed down?

I live in Malta. We have no trains on the island as you may be aware. I model British locomotives and wagons/coaches. The layout looks nothing like anything in the UK. All my buildings have flat roofs, just like the ones we have here yet someone insisted on telling me that if it rains, that roof would flood in real life! You can imagine how hard I laughed at the person's comment and moved on. Most of these rivet counters are not worth answering their badly intended comments! Well said!! Rule #1 😀 As for my layout has been a work in progress for nearly 5 years, and I only just started with some landscaping. Be or old time Tri-Ang, and Hornby Dublo, or a review on what a youngster's train set looks like, or a scale single era layout. I can appreciate what you do for what you do. Never has you do you been more appropriate. There is never a need for gate keeping. My N gauge layout is firmly early mid sixties in a fictional notrh east Midlands area and that's fine by me, but I won't denigrate anyone else for their modern image or toy train layouts, as I said you do you, you want to run Stephensons Rocket between the Flying Scotsman and a class 66 Freightliner, you do you and have fun with it. As for gatekeeping, yes... My club does indeed, unfortunately, have those individuals who are like "This layout has a setting, you can't run that on here, it's out of era/region"... But for every one of those, there are two who would run whatever they can on that layout during an open day specifically just to annoy the gatekeepers. It's a wonder a brawl hasn't actually kicked off yet... Pretty much why whenever someone asks me what era/setting my own layout is, my response is "It's fictional". Nice easy response giving myself a free pass to run whatever I want on it. One word that seemingly absolves you of all the rules...

I have always welcomed any comments and a lot have helped me develop the layout but if any of these gatekeepers / rivet counters looked at how I do my layout they would probably end up in a cardiac ward! They way I see it there are two types of modeller. The serious who cares about authenticity and period dates, the other like me who doesn't. When I started buying I had no idea about eras and what type of stock goes with which locos, I still don't. I will always be forever grateful to a member of staff I spoke with in Rails of Sheffield around 12 years ago. I went in to the shop to buy some models and I was umming and arring about what I should buy. He asked me what the problem was? I explained that I was just starting and I hadn't a clue on what to buy. He asked if I had a layout yet, I said no. He then said about the serious and not so serious aspect and ended up saying why don't you buy what you want and run your layout as a preserved railway i.e. all manner of traction and coaches irrespective of era, he said you could even have period and modern road vehicles if you did. That's what I've done ever since, it makes things so much easier.

I agree with your comments Craig. Yes I am i my 70's and I am a bit of a "gatekeeper" but only in my shed. Yes I try and keep my locos in 1948-56 era Great Western and my BR vans , like the Scarab with a "W" on the door. Why because its the fun for me of the chase to find them. I don't preach it to anyone else. I hate the "timetable" layouts at exhibitions etc. I volunteer at Locomotion in Shildon and we get lots of young School children visiting. when they look at our models and see the cost I try and guide them into the "cheap" side of the hobby to start and encourage them to start small. Also explaining that they can become "artists", "Electricians", "Carpenters", "Mechanics" and " Computer experts" all by learning through the hobby. I hope that i pass on my thoughts about the hobby to them by showing what they can achieve. One more thing, don't think its Model railways that is the bastion of the "Gatekeepers. I have worked on a preserved railway as well and boy, do you get some "Rivet Counters" telling you what you should have done when you rebuilt the Loco that is pulling the train for their enjoyment. A Triang Johnson 3F I'd restored from non running, a 6 wheel milk van, a teak clerestory brake coach, and a set of 3 of those hornby recent 6 wheel coaches, the LNWR livery. Each piece had a personal story attached, and a history. After that experience, I didnt WANT to go back. Sneers at my locomotive, comments on being 'incorrect' for the time, not so politely being asked to not run on their layout, one even saying 'You're not running that' and I wont use the word he said because KZread will get mad at me. All the best to those who want to stay, and to those like yourself with open minds, but it soured the experience too much for me.

I worked on the footplate for over 30 years (retired, ill health like many railwaymen of my age) but I've never been a railway modeller. I had a trainset as a child (1950s - early 60s) but that's as far as it went. I suppose being a railwayman from the 1970s onwards working horrendous hours didn't help. I do, however, love to see the fantastic output on display on KZread - whatever the level of accuracy or otherwise. I must say though that I understand fully why some (probably including myself here too) might be less than keen to give it a go. Some of the these old "Gatekeepers", as you call them, can behave like very stern old headmasters from what I've seen around the internet. I find it highly amusing though when some old boy gives us, "the benefit of his modelling experience" when displaying a layout from the old semaphore days. Many of the modern day (boil in the bag) drivers still find semaphore signalling confusing but some of these occasional expert modelling geriatrics claim to know it all inside out. Examining their layouts they clearly don't. You have a wonderful community that could be a source of great encouragement and knowledge that already produces some breathtaking work. Show the Gatekeepers to the door and ask them not to slam it on the way out. They'll soon get the message.

It's always nice to have little details accurate to the real railways, but does it really need to be so 100% accurate? I don't think so, and it's not great when certain members insist on punching down on other modellers - well said comment mate!

Well said Craig. One of my (many) reasons for watching your channel is your honesty and sense of fairness. Yes, there are some people who want to leave a legacy, but there are others, like you say, that look down on certain questions. They know more about how the actual railway used to work, it gives them license to spout utter nonsense. Ask them about the Train Operating Systems, Train controller, NCE Power Cab etc. see how some of them will recoil. The modelling world needs younger people to keep it going, also to inject new ideas and technologies. Anyway, that's my rant over, all the best. Ian

I like the text intro! 🙂 - - - Us and Them syndrome. What a lot of these 'keep it 100% realistic' bods forget is when they have gone, so has their knowledge, unless they are prepared to share it - but without being dogmatic on the fine details. "It would be better if you did (xxx)" is a lot better for everyone than "You cannot do that, you have to do this - or go away" as some clubs and groups seem to do/say. Look at the 'real' railway. Right now, they are running HST power-cars on freight trains, test trains, etc, and why not? Towards the end of steam, passenger express loco's were used to haul freight. Every form of traction slowly migrates down, as better machines come along. Look at 12" to the foot heritage lines, they run a right hodge-podge of stock behind whatever traction they have available. Nobody shouts that a Scots steam loco cannot tow Southern electric coaching stock - or "That SECR tank loco would never have been seen shunting in Bury or Carnforth." Gates are for keeping livestock in, and people out - or vice-versa - and have no place in a hobby that anyone can enjoy in their own way.

I also don’t care that much about era, if there’s a loco or wagon I want and it doesn’t fit in for me, then why should I be worried about that? If you enjoy something, then do it, don’t let rude arrogant people stop you from doing what you want. And I know this sounds harsh, but to those who pick on others and put their layouts down for absolutely no reason, get a life, make your own layout, and don’t bully others…

I'm getting back into the hobby just now, after 40 years away, and this kind of gate keeping - let's call it what it is, snobbery and petty bullsh*t from entitled, small minded people with little or no sense of respect or wonder left in them - makes me grind my teeth. I also build model aircraft, and paint figures, vehicles and scenery for historical and sci-fi 28mm gaming, and let me tell you, it exists there, too.Boy, does it ever... Anyway. Your good self and the guys at Budget Model Railways are a breath of fresh air. I want to use my old layout baseboard - in two bits in the loft - to make a simple little Inglenook for whatever 00 gauge stuff I can salvage, and a runabout for N or OO9. My 83 year old Dad is recovering from a stroke and wants a shelf layout for his mantle piece, too. I'm going to set them in whatever grimy, working setting I feel like, and run what I want and can afford/kit bash. After all, when I was a kid, my old Lima type 35 Hymek used to pull a short based Caledonian coach, a break van and a Smith's Crisps vent van. Often in that order. As for 53 year old me, I just want to play with trains again! Cheers, thanks once more - I've liked and subscribed. Hope you go huge.

Agreed, the 'monetisation' is just a bit sad, the 'gatekeeping' is rather missing the point. I have helped a couple of youngsters build layouts (my own never got finished due to repeated house moves). I ended up with a collection of odds and ends and when an older chap decided he was finally old enough for a train set I put them together for him. For the details of how all the odd bits got incorporated google for Outline history of the Great Grand Fenwick Railway (and Sons) - The 'trinket smugglers' became a bit of a 'thing', all rather gratifying. These days it's the cost that puts me off, and getting reliable running is still difficult for a youngster (the old Hornby 3-rail stuff just 'worked') but with the Kato pocket-line stuff now available and some 3D printed loco bodies I might give it another go myself.

Hi, I totally agree with you about the model railway police try to tell you what’s right and what’s wrong for you, people should do what they want on their railways, we certainly don’t live in a perfect world, the manufacturers don’t really help with what they do for example Accurascale producing an exclusive run of an item that would sell very well and not get another run is bad for the hobby! Hornby moved the goalpost on the purple Queen Elizabeth loco a few years ago, they stated 1000 units then produced 1500! Please correct me if I’m wrong but the point is more modellers got to have one along with the muppets who got them then tried to sell them for a king’s ransom on DreamBay, at least Bachmann produce enough of their products so a huge percentage of modellers can get a model, they have the collectors club to unleash the rare items onto modellers with extra deep pockets, thanks for sharing.

So are there only 400 to 500 railway modellers out there! Quite a few of the exclusive models they produce are sold to muppets who want to make big money out of real modellers buy selling the models they get on Greedbay! I am fortunate enough to come from an area, where there are lots of old railwaymen, from all parts of the BR i.e. Driver Super-intendants, drivers second men, guards, signalmen and permanent way lads. They are all extremely helpful on the history and running of the railway when we still had proper rail-freight and loco hauled passenger trains. They are also a very good source of photos from the 1950's to the modern day, which give a really good insight for modelling.

Yes Craig,”bollywollocks”coins it in one,in addition the following comes to mind,”Codswallop and Poppycock”. I have lived and worked here in Japan for 25 years, six years ago I returned to railway modeling after a break of 60 years. Railway modeling here is 70% - 80% N scale due to limited available space in most homes, about 10% Ho (USA and Japanese rolling stock). My layout is British Railways (1940-1970’s)here in Japan and it’s OO !! .So as an scale outcast I totally enjoy building my new large layout with scenery encompassing both UK and Japanese scenes. Here in Japan the knowledgeable mostly share their expertise and don’t “self annoint”themselves or place themselves on a lofty pedestal!. Greatly appreciate your informative and straightforward approach to railway modeling.

The great thing about model railways is that you have a blank canvas to do whatever you want. If sharing how you did something helps someone out or inspires someone, even if its just one person, that's well worth the effort and far more important than likes, views or making a few quid from monetization. A lot of people aren't in a position to run their own model railway or get to exhibitions, so running sessions and seeing different trains run on layouts on KZread makes them happy. We should be encouraging that all the time. A lot of the problems you see on Facebook and forums stems from people with commercial interests. Some of those new channels that seem to come out of nowhere with professional looking layouts are quite often managed directly or indirectly by corporate media teams. It still seems crazy to me that people are willing to sign NDAs and give away some of their independence for a few free items, or getting access to something before a rival channel. The hobby needs less drama, more modeling and focusing on making the hobby accessible to everyone.

I've done my bit to stir your Gatekeepers as on a UK forum I saw someone posting about an upcoming anniversary of the first exhibition OO layout: A.R Walkley’s Portable Goods Yard, I saw that track plan and went I can build that and quickly built the baseboards to T-Trak-HO standards (double-straight modules) and put some track down, to their shock & horror as I used Kato HO unitrack, with DCC. Then topped their horror by using Victorian Railways diesel locomotives & rollingstock. The only reason why I’ve not done much with it in awhile, is that I’m stuck on how to landscape it and how to design the fiddle yard. For landscaping I’ve been bouncing around Walthers Cornerstone Buildings placed around the layout and a large semi-scratchbuild building trains pull into using the Auhagen modular building system, something not readily available in Australia. I know I’ve bought out both the European Train specialist stores stock of some elements with a near-zero chance of them restocking.

Since the advent of the internet the amount of information available is phenomenal, but the rise of the keyboard warrior is the downside. I hope it's ok with you, Craig, but I would like to pass on the name of a group of railway modellers who are very helpful, friendly, non judgemental and supportive of whatever standard you work to. It's the Railway Modellers Club, part of the Scale Model Scenery company. There are experienced modellers right through to beginners who are willing to help with advice when or where needed. I have no affiliation with the RMC other than as a member who thinks knowledge is better shared so that everyone can improve their game, or not if you don't want to. It starts with a love for trains, and our cumulative life experiences with trains which vary from Individual to individual. Then a desire to model these experiences and impressions. Bang on, modelling, whatever it is, is a hobby, a personal thing, there are many ways to skin a cat as the saying goes, all that matters is we're having fun, that's what a hobby is. Of course some folk have more experience and knowledge, but that should be asked for, not rammed down other people's throats.

I personally know someone who’s a rivet counter but he doesn’t have any problem with nitpicking, most of the time. As someone who models Thomas the Tank Engine in a semi-realistic way, what I do with my stock is my own tastes. It always seems the minority who have to be realistic to the point of over obsessing over every little detail no matter what. Even into the mid 1950’s there still were a minority of locos in grouping liveries, so what? It’s different and interesting.

Then there're the elasticated trouser -wearers with their backpacks, stinking of salt and vinegar crisps that stand and bore all and sundry with their criticisms...Don't start me on those who cry out "don't touch" when a child points to something and asks about it..

I have to say it's not just gate keepers or the dreaded rivet counters. I often see a kind of pecking order where some people whose layouts are nowhere near the level of some still picking holes in those they feel are below them - which sometimes they aren't - or picking on their style of presentation. They help no one and sometimes make me wonder what attracted them to the hobby in the first place as they show no joy in anyone else's work.

I've always thought one of the best things about railway modelling is its wide spectrum. Anything from an out-of-the-box set up with little scenery and basic buildings to highly detailed exact scale reproductions. All are perfectly valid. One of the silliest things I have ever seen was when two exact scale societies had a big argument. A notice at an exhibition stand of one of them declared members of the other society would not be served.

Quite right. Unless you have unlimited funds, time, space, and necessary skills, everything is a compromise. I think the key for many of us is to have something that is faithful to the original, not an exact replica down to the last rivet. If it looks right and conveys the right atmosphere of the period, then that is good enough. Equally, if you want to run Thomas the Tank Engine with Mark 3 coaches that's just fine too.😊
