    hi there. I miss the old tungsten lighting kits! Hot but powerful and easier to control...I have been using LED panels like the ones you used to have...2 of those but I think this Godox would be better for interviews...do you find the footage to be a lot better than before? It must be more powerful than the previous LED panels you had...or not? I may get one and use it a key light...

  • @NickChurchPhotography

    I would say that the quality of the footage is better, but mostly that's as a result of being able to attach a selection of existing modifiers I have already. If I wanted to do any fictional work, then they would be much better as you can better control the light to give the look you're after. The key point for me with interviews/youtube is that these lights are around 2.5x the power of my previous LED panels, which means I no longer need lights hovering really close, just out of frame. And if things are further away, it's all more even too. Thanks.

    @@adamwestphoto I use 2 x 8800 in each. Have never run out yet. These batteries are 64Wh, so two of them will power an ML60bi at full power for 2 hours. In reality you're never at full power for most applications, so it will go all evening.

    Thank you! It's 60w, so if you imagine a 60w lightbulb, then you're in the right ball-park. If you have two, then you can double the power output. This is about as powerful as you can get with battery power, and that battery power option is the main advantage here. If your shooting scenario is an interview etc where you can get the lights quite close to the subject (1-2m) and still be out of shot, then you'll be fine, even at low ISO. If you're doing a full body shot, then you will need them further away to ensure they are out of shot then you will need to let ISO increase a bit to compensate. But depending on your camera system, if it has dual-base ISO then then is not a major issue anyway.

    Can you explain what you mean by “you can’t push out the ambient light“

  • @NickChurchPhotography
    @NickChurchPhotography Жыл бұрын

    Hi, sure. It’s because when you use flash you have two separate light sources: ambient and flash. They both work independently to create the lighting in the final image. You can reduce (push away) ambient light using a faster shutter speed, but this does not affect your flash intensity. So with flash you can make a room totally dark and just lit with flash. Continuous light is adding to/blending with your ambient light so can’t be separated (increase your shutter speed, and you reduce everything)

  • @NickChurchPhotography
    @NickChurchPhotography Жыл бұрын

    Thanks man. I backup my cat to my external drive, which also contains my library. Then I duplicate that drive to another regularly. That way, anything happens to my computer or the drive connected to it, I’ve got all the images and a recent catalog. Images and cat are equally important. To change your backup location go to catalog settings and select ‘backup when LR next exits’. Then close LR and you’ll have the popup. This lets you change the destination to somewhere on an external drive. If you don’t use an external drive then just copy your lrcat file to somewhere else relatively often (every shoot most likely).

    At 7:32 when you open the temporary exported catalog to make edits, did you do anything with that presets folder you included or did LR just find those presets on its own? I know you don’t show us that you did anything with the presets when you open the exported catalog, but I wonder if you had wanted to use a preset to edit (instead of using the sliders), then are the presets already loaded? Or would you have to go to Develop > Presets > Add new presets ‘ upload presets and pull from that folder? I hope this makes sense. :/ GREAT VIDEOS!!!! Game changers

    Are you worried about your catalog ever going corrupt by just keeping one massive catalog? The way we back up our photos as photographers seems like we need to have redundancy for our catalog edits too. Right now for 2021 I only have April onwards but would like to just keep this one catalog moving forwards for all shoots for all years in the future (til I hit 1 million like you). Previously I have had catalogs corrupt and that is why I made a new one. Do you have advice about where to store your catalog? And is it okay to make a copy of a catalog, will it work? Let’s just say you make a copy of your catalog to your external hard drive or have it backed up on backblaze and your MBP gets knocked over by a toddler (!!) - then could you use the copy of the catalog just fine? As long as it still points to the RAWS in the same spot? Last question - I have a problem with my presets not loading in new catalogs. From the example above you may have noticed I’ve had some bad luck with corrupt catalogs so I have to restore one from a copy or from my backblaze cloud. - The presets almost always are not synced and I have to build my preset library again from scratch. And, even though I’ve saved all my presets to a folder on my external harddrive called presets, it says they are the wrong file type - even though in the previous catalog they were loaded fine. The file type is not an issue I expect a reply on! I just want to know why my presets don’t ever stay with the catalog. :(

    Hi Nick, your videos are great, I’ve been a comment hog tonight on all of them. I sound really dumb above… I *do* back up my catalogs on every exit of LR. Where do you keep your back ups? PS - I actually came back to make a video request… you;’ve mentioned a couple times that you may want to sync a collection to LR CC to edit on the go, can you make a video on that? On how you go between LR CC and LR Classic? And how your presets work between the two (specifically how to get your same presets on to LR CC). Thanks again for the great videos!

  • @NickChurchPhotography
    @NickChurchPhotography2 жыл бұрын

    Some great observations in here Sarah. Yes there is a chance of corruption and yes I’m worried about it which is why you need a solid backup policy. I keep a copy of my Lightroom on my iMac, regularly backing up to cloud storage. I also have a regular backup going onto external drives. Keeping multiple versions in a variety of places is your insurance policy against severe data loss. Lightroom’s policy of automatically backing up in the main Lightroom folder is not ideal as theft or the drive going down takes all the backups as well as the main catalog. With catalogs in another location, if there’s a problem you simply copy the cat back to the original location and open it again… although actually you can open it from wherever you like, it’s best to move it back to the one original place to avoid confusion about which is the ‘current’ one. The issues above - none of them are solved with splitting a catalog. If you lose a catalog you go to a backup. If you have no backup then sure you would still have the older shoots in the other catalogs but you’ll still have lost the most valuable which is all the latest shoots which you may not have delivered. Splitting up catalogs gives a false sense of security in this way. It doesn’t solve any of the issues, in fact I think it adds to them. Because if your backup policy is a bit crap, then having loads of catalogs in multiple locations is probably going to be chaotic carnage and lots more data is at risk. Poor user management of data is the usual way things get lots, not fire or theft. Presets should move over really easily, so I can’t understand why this may be. You might have ‘keep presets in catalog’ option ticked which almost always does the wrong thing. These are really common issues which is why I cover all this in detail in my Lightroom zoom workshop, so do let me know if that’s ever if interest

I don’t think I do, but just got a new laptop (M1) (because LR was loathe somely slow and my old MBP only had 8 GB RAM, and LR now recommends 16 GB RAM but LR is still not crazy fast -which brought me to your video in the first place! @@seapy2398 I will bear the music volume in mind for future videos. If you will never need to move images between your catalogs, or view them together then there is no major issue with having multiple catalogs. For most people, yes they don't make sense. However, I do separate my personal stuff from paid/professional work (even though I'm not a professional, but when I photograph models for example). In those instances where one has a professional portfolio and a personal portfolio, then having two or maybe three catalogs makes sense. I also sometimes do demonstrations or presentations and it's nice to show just my "professional"/paid work and not having my personal stuff getting in the way. You can create separate Collections to sort things out but i Prefer to keep the two separated in different catalogs. There is hardly any time when I need to jump back and forth between the two in a single editing session. I'm usually either working on personal or model/paid work. I mean it used to be that once you hit about 50-60k images, you had to create a catalog or deal with a really slow experience, but that has changed now with the newer versions of LR which can hold a lot more and not impact performance. But what you don't want to end up with is a separate catalog by shoot, category or year. That can be excessive and can make backing up your catalogs a nightmare. Fewer is better, but sometimes you would benefit from more than one. The other thing about splitting stuff up is that if I'm going on vacation, I rarely need to deal with my paid client work, so I don't copy or bring that catalog with me (as I back them up to my external SSD before leaving so I can work on they while traveling).

  • @NickChurchPhotography

    I have always had 100,000s of images switch no problem. SQL likes data, it performs happily with many times that. I do agree with you that there are valid times where separating your work into multiple cats does make sense, but felt that this was outside the scope of this video. The main issue as you say was that a catalog per shoot is not the right way to use Lightroom.
