It's not the Fincher _tone_ that made this movie flop, or the camera angels. It's the (story) choices. I'm curious to see if you agree with the points I'm listing. (Also, considering _Terminator 2_ came out in 1991, that should give you an indication of what CG was able to do back when this movie was made.) *Alienating your audience* Killing off Hicks and Newt _off-screen_ isn't just kicking your audience in the nuts, but people found it disrespectful to the characters themselves. Many people I spoke to said it colored their opinion, making the audience angry. This caused the audience not to appreciate things they usually appreciate in a movie like this, or actually miss those aspects because they were still distraught about Hicks and Newt. So even though you guys try to look at it more from an objective side, the fact you also feel that way shows that it's a "bad call" (as Paul Reiser's Burke would've said). Most people in the audience (like we are in your comments) aren't that objective; they judge with emotion. While I can understand the choice from a director's perspective, it's a choice that resonated very badly with the audience, but to be fair, you can't really solve the problem. The kid playing Newt being _5 years_ older at this point, making her a teenager, doesn't work. Recasting her would disappoint or even anger the audience as well. Hell, even when letting her play herself 5 years older still would put off the audience, because she's not a kid anymore and people may not even recognize her being the same girl, because she simply looks different. The director and writers simply didn't have much of a choice but to kill her off-screen. Therefore I don't think there was much of an intent for shock value. Still, this decicion ... you might say this alienated the audience, or perhaps antagonized the movie itself. *Personalities* There are too many (mostly nameless) characters running around. _Aliens_ had the same problem once the space marines came into play, but that didn't happen for a good 20 minutes. Cameron simply killed off the majority of them once the aliens got screentime. _That_ was shock value. Worked for the suspense and anxiety, but it also kept the playing field clear. When you look at the previous movies, halfway through the movie you could name all of the characters by name. When you can't do the same in _Alien 3_ that should be a red flag. With _Alien 3_ it's quite difficult to remember the names of most characters. Beside Ripley we remember only 2 or 4 names out of the 25 men in this entire place, yet all those people still play a role and many of them even are addressed by name, but those names simply don't stick. How many can you name from the top of your head? As Denice said, when you have so many people, they need to have distinguishable personalities that stand out to the audience and too few do. Appearances help as well, but when everyone's dressed the same way and are all bald, it gets even more difficult to remember who they are. This movie mostly suffers from audience attachment to the characters. We simply don't care about them. This movie also made the choice to kill off pretty much the only prominent characters (and the two _likeable_ characters) once the alien makes its appearance to make you feel sad, but that pretty much only leaves Ripley and Preach in a movie filled with nameless characters. Getting rid of the warden, sure, that works for the story. Getting rid of Clemens works for the story as well, but for a movie with so few prominent characters it doesn't work if you kill off the named characters early on. We merely started to get attached to Clemens before he gets killed, but it doesn't have the _impact_ like with Hudson or Vasquez because the attachment isn't strong enough. *Death of Ripley* Even though people don't _like_ to see Ripley dying, I do get that Fincher wanted to find 'closure' for a trilogy. You need to wrap things up properly and with Hicks and Newt gone from her life, Ripley pretty much has nothing to live for anymore. Letting her survive alone would just be cruel. So they came up with the ultimate sacrifice. It's a good call for the end of the trilogy, but I don't think anyone considers this franchise a trilogy. Alien 3 was too much of a letdown for people to consider this movie an actual part of the first two movies. This is probably why there was a next movie, because people wanted ... well, let's call it a tribute? *Alien: Ressurrection* So yeah, I think you'd appreciate _Alien: Ressurrection_ after seeing this ;) I suppose the title is a bit of a spoiler, but hey - if even the title spoils something, that's not my fault ;) But it's most of all a very _entertaining_ movie. It may not be as impressive in terms of filmmaking, but the entertainment-factor makes up for it.

So after joining you guys I finally decided to watch what you thought about this movie. To me this movie was like how Jean Reno said “This is Coffee?” . It’s not bad but it doesn’t feel like Godzilla and I feel like how the Japanese have now named this, Take out the “God” part and just call it Zilla. Even though you’ve caught up with all the current monsterverse movies, I think you should watch Godzilla: Final Wars, it’s cheesy but it’s fun and I think you might like the cameos and the throwbacks to older showa era Godzilla films.

Lovely. Just lovely. This trilogy is near snd dear to us. Sending you a private email. Please watch for it. It may contain not only praise for your exemplary film commentary, but some little known background (from a former Universal Studios Tour Guide in the 80’s) and, related, what finally happened to that clock. Cheers, kids🥂

It's definitely a modern classic and if someone said "I've never seen a Godzilla film" this is the one I'd start them with. I haven't watched the English dub so I don't know how that holds up. I'm looking forward to seeing hte Minus Color version which should be on Netflix in a bit.

This movie is part of Ripley's human journey. We lose people along the way and I think this movie is the most human of all the Alien films because it deals with grief and hardship in a way the other films don't. Most people prefer to deflect when they're presented with an emotional challenge.

Intentional or not, Aemond was the only one at fault there. Prince Luce and his dragon are only really young, and being chased by a dragon the size of Vhagar and being cornered is going to cause the smaller dragon to retaliate, and Vhagar is a veteran war dragon, if she gets attacked, she's going to kill whatever attacked her.

A lot of the best found footage films are of this variety and are generally untouched/unknown by the KZread community. I’d recommend films like Butterfly Kisses, Savageland, the Bay and Lake Mungo are really really good. And I’d love to see what you guys think of each. Regardless I love the reactions!
