YES the over 18/change in concept from "girly" to more mature. its so gross but such a common thing that happens in kpop also i personally love their disco theme and scientist is a good song. i do not believe they should go back to the cute concept, they should do what they want a lot of people were saying that their lack of popularity is also due to a perceived "westernization"-- do you believe this too? im curious what everyone thinks of that, but i personally think its incredibly untrue considering the groups/songs that have gotten popular recently definitely have a western influence and/or a lot of english lyrics. but then again, those groups also have many minors in them....

As a once who’s been a fan since early 2019 before they started to change their concept,I can agree that they had so much impact in the kpop industry like they were making MILLIONS and started gaining a bigger fan base that time which was a really fun time to be a once.I can honestly understand the shift in their concepts since most of the members are close to 30 than their debut age so they wanna make a concept that fits their age range, but regardless I still think they’re a talented group with potential till this day

You can count me as someone for whom the "YG Sound" very much DOES NOT work. Despite my hatred of YG stans -- between Blinks constant attacks on Once and BaeMon fans ganging up on NMIXX's Jiwoo (one of my top biases), I can't forgive them -- I was still willing to give "Batter Up" a chance, but I found it absolutely mid except maybe the rapping. I felt the same about "Sheesh". I'll gladly acknowledge BaeMon's talent, but they deserve better than Teddy's crap.

Agree so mich wih your points: -To me is soooo weird and honestly creepy how grown men are always fans of gg when they are young. The younger the better, it seems; and once the members start to be 25 years old they move on to another younger group, like wtf! As a fan who is woman, that always made me sooo uncomfortable. Now I am seeing the same thing bit with LE SSERAFIM. High-key I am happy that those kind of "fans" left and now TWICE has fans who actually likes them for them and their work. -As anything, I also think that as time goes on and 4gen came, the general public just move to the new groups. This is just how kpop (or any industry, honestly) works -I also think that overall their singles pre-Fancy are better but their b-sides post-Fancy are better. Maybe that could be a factor -Their fanbase is also growing up with them, meaning they are adults now and the way an adult consumes kpop is reeeeally different as to how a teenager does. The crazy hormones help in making teenagers live and breathe kpop. When you grow up you are normal about it. I can see this same effect with ither groups like SNSD,SHINee and Red Velvet. Their sales and fans are there but they dont go viral like newjeans or IVE

i pretend the song doesn’t exist in their discography sometimes 😃, its catchy sure, and i enjoy yunjin’s rap(?) part in the first verse too but the general vibe of the lyrics are just bland (korean ones too) and not too believable bcs why are the members who had then received the most hate for nothing(cw skr), singing barely any lines or just one verse in a song about not asking for forgiveness, even the music video has barely scenes with them. I don’t really understand kazuha’s parts too (breaking the wings : to show she’s no longer a ballerina bcs of the association with swans? just confusing now bcs they release swan song in the next album). The lyrics again are boring and repetitive , and the instrumental just annoys me so bad i hate cowboys and the west 🙏🏼. The music video is not great either, I like kazuha’s scenes visually, hate everything else but I think it might be more of a personal opinion.

I also think they waited too long to start doing solo activities. I remember it being a point of pride for Twice to always do things ‘as 9’, but people forget how much positive attention a single member can bring the group. Like I’m glad Dahyun will begin acting soon, but imagine if one of the girls started an acting career earlier. It would’ve just added on to the hype, especially if they did well! Thankfully Nayeon is doing really well, Jihyo got a lot of praise for her solo, and Misamo did well in Japan. But as individuals they need to branch out from the idol lane to keep public interest via acting, hosting, judging, maybe even opening a solo KZread channel? People just need to see them in a new light.

We really have to accept that Kpop is not an original culture . .. . 100% of the concepts of ALL Kpop groups, male and female, are copies of other concepts from around the world . . .Aespa obviously picked up another GG’c concept with Supernova and Armageddon . . .. not original sorry. . . . . Accusations of plagiarism among groups is so prevalent because indeed, the copying is quite obvious . . .so no, we can’t claim originality in Kpop . . . .honestly, there are times when they are all sounding alike already

Beyonce got her sound from Amerie when Rick Harrison gave her crazy in love instead of amerie . If you guys don’t know who amerie is , she is a Korean-African (biracial) and faced a lot of hard times during her career especially have a Korean mother she went through racism. In the end of her song she goes “oh woah oh oh oh” and nayeon uses the same scheme which I found crazy considering it sounds just like Amerie’s ! This was so cool knowing that Amerie and Beyoncé had the same producer !

@@choujimi ok then let me take you down a rung if you are the spelling police.. First off you act like TWICE was the first act of KPOP to put out English language songs to reach a wider audience... Not only aren't they the First... They are not even the First JYP Group to put out English Language Songs. We can go back to the Wonder Girls that debuted in 2007. In 2009 the Wonder Girls Launched their English Language Career touring with the Jonas Brothers and Performing in 45 concerts. The English language version of their son Nobody Debuted on the Billboard 100. In 2010 they performed on their own North American Tour which lead to major collaborations with performers like AKON in the song Like Money................ THIS IS JUST ONE GROUP THAT JYP MANAGED AND IT DOES NOT FULLY EXPLAIN WHY THEY WERE DEVELOPING AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CAREER......... The Wonder Girls are probably long before your time but they were extremely popular WORLD WIDE... AND WORLD WIDE IS ONE OF THE PRIMARY CONSIDERATIONS OF WHY GROUPS LIKE TWICE PERFORM IN ENGLISH. Because you can go anywhere in the world and there will be people that speak English. On the other hand there are only about 50 Million Koreans and maybe 100 million people worldwide that speak Korean while there are 8 Billion people in the world. The fact is the Korean language may have gained some popularity BECAUSE OF THESE KPOP artists BUT .. The reach of the Korean Language limits performers ability to expand and gain a bigger fan base and audience. So that turns KPOP Artists into Ambassadors for Korea and it allows the country to be seen as something more than factory workers that make Cars, Phones and Washing Machines. NOT TO MENTION YOU CLUELESS FOOL ... Have you even looked at who writes the lyrics for most KPOP Groups? ... If it is not only artists that are fully English speaking it is always a collaboration of English and Korean speaking Lyricists. BUT THESE FACTS DON'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO WHY THESE ARTISTS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT ARE PERFORMING IN ENGLISH... And the fact is even though I do know why we are never going to have that conversation because you aren't even willing to educate yourself on the business you believe you have right to criticize. So we will just let this be a mystery to you as to why until you put in enough effort to learn on your own. But don't go crying about Westernization of Korean Culture... Because thats not the reason.. and your belief it is... is offensive. Offensive not only to international relations... but it is offensive that you are willing to open your mouth and you know nothing about the internal workings of this industry. Also don't talk bad about TWICE or JYP they're good people. They don't deserve your criticism because you've never come close to their success.

@@zippythechicken Either you didn’t watch the video, or you’re making things up to justify how angry you are. I have no choice but to believe you’re just irrationally upset about something I said: I did not claim, in any capacity, that Twice was the first group to put out English language songs. That doesn’t have anything to do with what I discussed in the video. This video has *nothing* to do with English language being a “problem” when it comes to kpop. I have defended kpop groups and idols singing in English - I think they have every right to do so, and it’s weird for anyone to think they shouldn’t. This is your biggest point of criticism against me, yet it’s something I did not bring up in this discussion. I never claimed to be an industry expert, and I certainly have never criticized TWICE as a group. I *have* criticized JYPE, as they are the ones responsible for managing the groups. Claiming that JYP and staff are all “good people” is a nice outlook, but a gross generalization. Neither of us know the full extent of what goes on at JYPE to make a statement like that. “They don’t deserve criticism because you’ve never come close to their success” is laughable. How do those things relate to one another? Forgive me, but from my perspective, you seem unreasonably angry about something that has nothing to do with what was discussed in this video. I appreciate you taking the time to explain your views, but I’m at a loss as to how to respond to you. This seems like a problem you need to settle with yourself

@@choujimi what I am sick of is when someone isn't being honest about the industry. There is a lot of bad stuff that goes on in KPOP ... really really bad stuff. But when people put their Opinions out as Fact then thats not honest. But the way you say KPOP is westernized it sounds like they've become dirty. And none of these groups are emulating the west in that way. Rap in the west is pure evil hate and its blatant.. Pop in the west is pure perversion... Thats not something KPOP is emulating... But you didn't even catch on to Why TWICE's music changed for those few albums even after I said you have a lot of learning to do.. You try to blame me because you don't know and you don't want to put in the effort. TWICE started off as a Sexy Girl Group.. Then JYP Pulled them back... Their first single was Like Ohh Ahh... where they dressed sexy and acted sexy.. you didn't see that same type of performance for at least 5 years. Black Pink on the other hand started out as Middle School Students and progressed deeper and deeper into dark qualities and sex... Kill this love was the last Black Pink song I listened to. And after that I wanted nothing to do with them. But when TWICE started to have these darker concepts and considerations of Breakups of Relationships and hate started to move in ... did you do the research to see what company was producing that music? or did you just blame JYP in total... You say it was all JYPE's Fault... BUT IT WAS WARNER BROTHERS PRODUCING THE ALBUMS AFTER "I can't stop me" ... Twice was under contract to work with Warner Music and they brought in American Lyricists and Production... Thats why those songs got produced... But make no mistake about it the songs produced under Warner and Republic Records under Universal Music were of the same quality as "Like Ohh Ahh". If JYP didn't reverse the direction of twice and put out songs like "the best thing i ever did" and "Candy Pop" because as the theme of Twice Is... THE STORY CONTINUES .. see JYP was taking them from Infants to Women and that was the story... Massive build up to TWICE and their fans understanding "What Is Love" and what you go through in relationships until you find that someone and they "Fancy" you and you fall in love and all you want is "More and More" and More and More was the pinnacle of love... and then "Can't Stop Me" was them going over the edge of the cliff... and then "Cry For Me" was the Breakup near the end of their contract where they were cutting loose their fanbase to allow them to move on to Gen 3 / 4 Groups but TWICE decided to continue with their contracts and now they are doing solos with Nayeon and MiSaMo and trying to continue their careers because they got ripped off by the lockdowns and didn't get to do as many tours and tours is where they make the money not album sales or views on youtube.... So much planning has gone into everything and DUDE... YOU KNOW NOTHING... YOUR EYES ARE CLOSED.. YOU SEE NOTHING... You can't even follow something that is so extremely blatant they are slapping you in the face with the progression of this group and the women in it and the songs they sing and the fan base and everything surrounding it. BUT THEN YOU THINK YOU CAN OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND SPEW YOUR "FEELINGS" about something and you have never taken the time to even understand what is right in front of your face. So yeah thats what I am sick of... Hey I almost cry every time I see one of these amazingly beautiful girls (Kwon Yuri, Im Yoona, Sun Young Park, Soo Young Park... and others) in a Hanbok a dress that took thousands of years to design and perfect that displays the ultimate beauty of Traditional korean females... But they look dam good in a mini skirt too. But westernization... Thats like North Korea banning Blue Jeans .. Its a lot of foolishness. So before you open your mouth learn. Notice everything about something you want to comment about.. not just your initial impressions. Understand why these companies are doing these things.. often its not as superficial as you think.. These girls go through 5-10 years of training before they are introduced to the world and then every performance .. every article written about the.. every date they go on.. every endorsement they make.. It is all planned years before it happens. There are reasons for everything.. and you don't seem to be noticing them. you are just giving your personal feedback about how a song makes you feel and negating everything behind it. Look maybe you will one day become the most famous critic of KPOP there has ever been.. But you got a lot of work to get there. Because here is you... standing in the night club ..a song comes on .. and you say .. oh i don't like that... and theres where your knowledge ends. Well if you're that guy then your opinion means nothing more than the other 8 billion people in this world. and I am not insulted by anything else than your insinuations that aren't validated by fact. Because although this is a huge topic you may have noticed I have backed up everything I have said with fact... I can't teach you the progression of the KPOP industry over the last 20 years in a comment ... but you are bringing nothing to the table when you make your comments. Lean some facts .. This is the last comment I will make to you. Take my critique of your video serious if you expect to move forward doing this. Because you need to Up The Quality and Speak Fact not Feelings or Fiction.

It was interesting to watch this evaluation of the single and the incorporation of the sampled track. Art is always subjective and I find myself settling on a completely different theory of what the sample means to the song. In the original track, the lyrics speak about trauma, recovery and moving forward, then the strings come in and give a sense of uplift. Similarly, I find their influence uplifting in After Like, almost like they inspire us to forget pain, look forward, have hope and anticipate a different outcome. Rather than see them as jaded, I see them as optimistic, similar to every time we lose ourselves to new love and fall “head over heels” Either way I think the song is a great title track and I’m happy to see this generation of K-pop recognize eras other than Y2K. Thanks for the reaction!

Also Stray Kids' Thunderous/소리꾼 music video heavily features 도깨비불 goblin fire not in the lyrics but the visual effects. The flame obviously tied into the SKZ metaverse story at the time, but potentially also refers to becoming 소리꾼 (a legendary master artist or singer) as SKZ' own blue flame they are chasing irl because they love breaking the fourth wall like that.

As someone who became a Once in his 30s, I love that Twice keeps maturing and trying new things. My first kpop song was "Dreams Come True" by S.E.S. so I've seen my share of groups come & go-- Korea just prefers newer artists, in general. SNSD, Red Velvet, Kwan Boa... even the absolute best idols start to lose popularity as time passes. Girl groups also get less publicity and resources than boy groups because the female fanbase is the most reliable in all of kpop, & the ladies tend to like boy groups; that's also how groups like Exo & Shinee are still around and selling well while legends like f/x or 2NE1 are almost forgotten by the general public. I'd also factor in that during their domestic decline, they were on 2 world tours. A lot of Twice's early success was bolstered by the fact that they were EVERYWHERE on Korean tv at the time: they were on a classic episode of Running Man, they did Amazing Saturday and Weekly Idol a *lot*, they competed in the ISAC, Dahyun was a pretty popular variety guest host , etc. Plus , there was "Twice TV" then "Time To Twice". That high visibility really helped them connect with a larger fanbase than just the songs would have, and like you said, there are a unique combination of factors involved in any idol's popularity that go beyond the music. When I hear "Newjeans is everywhere", I chuckle, because that's exactly why they're so popular right now. I always thought the idea of "retro" songs being the problem might be a bit off the mark, since Newjeans is just doing a modern version of the R&B that was popular on Black college campuses in the 90s (30 years ago) and "Y2K" concepts and songs (which are now roughly 25 years old, too). And that's before we add in how popular disco-influenced artists are in Korea. How many shorts has Twice made to Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter? lol My biggest complaint about recent Twice is that the choreo feels a bit uninspired. For me, it started with "Hare Hare" and has continued through "ABCD". With Tiktok challenges becoming a huge part of an idol's reach that also drives fan engagement, underwhelming dances can be more of a killer than they might seem at first blush. I thought I was getting tired of the Kiel Tutin choreography, but now? I say call him back lol
