The great satirist Dean Swift wrote an exceedingly savage piece on what he would have liked to have been done to Henry Vlll. I concur with his sentiments wholeheartedly.
Hightower? my power is I'm a fabulous furry Jesus Freak. Starry starry night. Vincent was too.😊
nice
This is great, but Edward was 14... then by 1330 he tired of Mortimer. How long did he put up with the behaviour? I understand you can't fit everything into a KZread short.
1327 was when he was crowned.
@@InsaneDragoniteHD Thank you.
Beautiful history
What a great video! I am writing a gothic mystery novel and using Athelhampton as inspiration for the setting. This was so helpful and informative. I live in New Zealand, so can't make the visit in person. The house is absolutely breath-taking!
That's fantastic, good luck with the novel, sounds a good read!
Why should horrible music which conflicts with the Gregorian chant of the monks? You need to rethink your message and it's presentation.
so glad you guys are doing reels! :)
Thanks Elise, hope you're keeping well :)
Middleham was in the Honour of Richmond. The first lord of Middleham was Ribald, a half-brother of Alan Rufus. The later Nevilles obtained it and their surname by marriage to Isabelle Neville, heiress to Middleham. So, the Wars of the Roses came down to a confrontation between Richard III, from Middleham in the Honour of Richmond, and Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond.
The sound of little boys screaming 😮
I thought the torture chamber was sealed off. I heard a story that someone who tried to rid the chamber of evil spirits fled in terror after performing a sceance
We've also heard that story. The current torture chamber was originally a storage area for the castle, with the original apparently underneath what's now the castle's café
Visted there years ago bit only a small tour unfortunately
Henry the vile strikes again.
An excellent commentary about this mysterious village that has intrigued me for years.
Word's what words did you just say??
Thank you for your work
That sounds definitely medieval.
I enjoy all of Go Visit Castles videos
Your culture and history will be forgotten in a few decades, in your lifetimes you'll see your people become nothing but a tiny whisper.
weird comment.
also 'few decades' gonna take longer than 30 years to completely abolish the monarchy unfortunately . .
We've been going for over 1000 years so far, so whoever you think you represent, I think your perspective is a bit far fetched.
Terrible way to go 😢
Bolton Castle, Redmire/Leyburn area?
That's the one
I enjoy all of Go Visit Castles videos
Castles are real?
Yes.
Since most buildings in the UK look like they were built by an evil wizard, I'd say so 😉 ^^
@@_renaissance.girl_ you look pretty :3
I'm binge watching this channel now. It's fascinating
so glad you're enjoying it!
Just com across this channel. I love it thankyou
We love Ludlow castle, and the town!
There was no "vow of silence" among Cistercians or Benedictines - but silence was considered a virtue in the Rule of St Benedict. Speaking was permitted during work periods, but no frivolous or unnecessary chatter was allowed; silence was certainly enforced during meals and after Compline (when preparing for bed). The cloister would be fairly noisy when monks were reading to themselves, since it was normal to read out loud (see Julie Kerr: Life in the Medieval Cloister). Monks took four vows: poverty, chastity, obedience and stability - meaning that they would remain in the monastery for life. The Rule of St Benedict is the best starting point for studying monks and monasteries.

Henry VIII has a lot to answer for.
Love these videos!! Just wish they were longer (hint hint!!)
We'd love to have the time to make longer videos! Would definitely be more fun than our day jobs :)
Amazing !!! Maybe the Monks spoke different Languages !!! is why using hands and signs..
The wholesale destruction of the monastic houses, abbeys and convents during the Dissolution was one of the most egregious instances of destroying the cultural heritage of a country anywhere in history. The masons and artisans who over the centuries had put their very best work into these beautiful buildings were basically given the middle finger by Henry VIII and his henchmen. Henry VIII has so many horrible things he did or caused to be done in his name. He was a monster.
I absolutely wholeheartedly agree. The more of these places I visit, the more I feel that this was a very very dark time in our history. Thanks so much for your comment
Absolutely! The religious reformations were a horrible time in England
I believe it's more a museum now than a castle
It is, in a renovated ducal mansion. There are still traces of the medieval castle though. There are remains of Henry II's stone keep in one of the caves and the base of the gatehouse is still medieval, as are significant parts of the curtain wall
@@govisitcastles I believe there is a Bylaw in Nottingham that states that any building on top of that cliff must be called Nottingham Castle. Even a garden shed!
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
An ancestral home of mine. 😊
nice!
They never let you visit castles/ manors or churches like this anymore
This is one of my ancestral homes. I appreciate knowing more about it. 😊
I wonder what the ghost voice on your audio may have said?
John sage must of had a vengeance for the Scottish armys because he was injured by them hence the name dragfoot...

This castle looks even better than the one in the 1939 classic film “The Adventures of Robin Hood”. I can totally see Guy de Guiseborn (the evil Sheriff of Nottingham played by Basil Rathbone) having the all important sword fight with Robin Hood (Errol Flynn) in this castle!
I think all of that film was shot entirely in the USA, and Basil Rathbone definitely didn't have the Nottingham accent :D
When you said church I immediately thought “Templar church” like the one in London even before you said it. Templar churches were usually round.
So much English history has happened at this castle!
My favorite version of “Jane Eyre” (2006) was filmed here! I always wondered where it was filmed. Thank you so much. Your channel is an Anglophile’s dream. (I have lots of English ancestors and love all things doing with English history.)
Great video. Thanks for sharing!
Did the windows ever have glass panes?
A good question! Some fortified buildings did during the Norman period, but mainly churches. Windows usually had wooden shutters with an iron bar across. But by the Tudor period, glazed windows were more common.
Music = too loud
Great video, this helped me briefly recap the topic for my GCSEs.
Awesome
I've done a couple of weekend camps there. Let's just say in February, that place ios damned cold! PS, where's your theme music from?
One of our editor's compositions, he's written quite a lot of our music
