GOODRICH CASTLE - William Marshal's Fortress of the Marches

Join the GVC team as we explore the magnificent medieval remains of Goodrich castle near the Anglo-Welsh border. Owned by one of the great castle builders and medieval knights, William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke, taken on pain of death during the turbulent Despenser wars, and the walking grounds of spectral beings…

Great premise for a channel - "go visit castles"; i.e. tourist funds assist with the upkeep and maintenance of these wonderful and historical treasures. And, I agree with @loriedgerly7229 - we have nothing this exceptional in the US - the history, depth and generations of historically significant events. I mean, we have the boston tea party, but - umm, yeah lol. Glad you don't take it for grantid. Truely wonderful - Thank you!

Exactly why we started the channel, without tourism a lot of these buildings wouldn't survive. So glad you enjoy seeing them, thanks for watching! P.s - we also have the Boston Tea Party, but they're a chain of rather fabulous tea rooms in the south west of England :D

Another goodie from GVC! I don't think any other castle l has such impressive spur buttresses as Goodrich. Makes it instantly recognisable. You are right about it being one to visit-there is so much to see.

No mention of one of the main builders and residents of Goodrich, Joan de Valence, granddaughter of William Marshal? The 'Mac-Mac' tower probably relates not to 'Macbeth' but to 'Machmurchada' - Isabelle de Claire's mother was Aoife, daughter of Diarmait Machmurchada of Leinster. Isabelle de Clare being wife to William Marshal.

hmm Godric / Goodrich is a an Anglo-saxon name, but castle was built by the Normans. Was he a Saxon who made good under William (very rare) or was he a Norman who took his saxon wife's family name (rare but not as rare as the former)? My own Old English family name was taken by a Plantagenet era knight when he was married off to an heiress in Somerset (unfortunately not related, it's a toponymic surname)
