Medicating Normal

Medicating Normal

"Medicating Normal", feature length documentary, 76 minutes

Combining cinema verité and investigative journalism, "Medicating Normal" follows the journey of five Americans - a newly married couple, an army combat veteran, a student, and a waitress. All suffered from problems that used to be considered part of the normal fluctuations of human emotion-mild depression, anxiety, sleeplessness-and all but one were seriously debilitated by the psychoactive drugs commonly prescribed to treat these issues.

"Medicating Normal" is the untold story of what can happen when profit-driven medicine intersects with human beings in distress.

I have recently purchased Joanne's book The Bitterest Pills. The main reason for this was because for the last 4 years my son has been under psychiatry. He has been prescribed Antipsychotics drugs during this time. My son has really struggled on these meds told me his emotions have been blunted so much he hasn't been able to cry or feel emotions that we all take for granted. He described feeling like he was highly sedated, was not able to enjoy things he used to enjoy. We have tried to raise these concerns with my sons psychiatrist to no avail. My son has had 2 more episodes of psychosis in the last year causing him to be sectioned again. This cannot be right. I have to be an advocate for my son and continue to challenge the psychiatrist and his team. I am very concerned for my sons overall wellbeing and the potential damage these Antipsychotics, are doing to his brain long term. Keep up the good work Joanna, let's hope for more good psychiatrists like yourselfto come forward with better ways to treat psychosis, depression and other mental health illnesses.

I’ve heard there are studies that show people can get as effective mental health help by having therapy plus regular sauna sessions, than therapy and anti depressants (even better than and it lasted a long time).

The amount of obtuseness in this comment section is annoying. OBVIOUSLY not everyone will have a family member to talk to instead of a professional. Idk why people behave as if they need disclaimers and qualifiers for every little thing.

I know how bad benzodiazepines can be cause I knew someone who took them! They can be very addictive because they’re effects is like alcohol, they hit you right away! Even though some doctors every now and then prescribe them for anxiety, they are not meant to be taken on a regular basis. If anything the doc should only give for you if your anxiety is occasional to take as a backup Incase you need it like if you wanna take a flight but your too scared for example! On the other hand antidepressants gradually take their time to work over weeks so you don’t even notice the change right away which is good cause it’s not addictive!

How horrible to believe how many people have been duped by the common phrase ologies like: you have a chemical imbalance, or because of having it, your children will most likely have it as well, or my favorite "we really don't know how the medicine works, but how does it make you feel?🤤 Legalized slavery. How so?, simple. Ever wonder how it was presented to the FDA as short term use, yet it is widely prescribed as long term use??? Enter thalidomide, that's right, the reason for the FDA to begin with. Yes the tragic thalidomide that devastated the world. So now we have a FDA to make sure that does not happen......yet, what went wrong here?, with the psyche meds?..... Like it was stated earlier, slavery. Congratulations public, not only did the pysche community prescribe short term medicine for long term use, and misdiagnosed people for numbers, but now that people are suffering from the damage of long term use, that same practice of bullshit has been able to slither out of accountability. How horrible to watch legalized human experiments, as well as the physical non reverseable effects from the pills. Soooooo, the psyche dr keeps them on the short term pills, with no repercussions? Really?. So, since you and I don't have a license to prescribe, why do they still have a license to practice? God dam, not only did the fda only approve for short term, but the greedy car collector dr's went ahead and kept people on them FOR A REPORT, For long term approval? Seems to be a problem with prosecuting the Dr's that Knowingly kept humans on them , only to support a vanishing community that specializes their practices with non scientific "magic" pill prescriptions. When you and I think about it, we can only imagine the amount of humans suffering from such a horrible crime against humanity. "Legalized slavery",aka experimental use of pills , rather than using approved studies. No it's easier to get approval, when you show more numbers to support long term approval. So, they are already breaking the law, knowing that they are putting human lives at danger, all for an approval outside the process. This is truely as horrible as the nazi camps. So, why get it approved for short term, when you make more money long term? 🤔🤔Read about the thalidomide incident. Prescribing pills that cause irreversible damage is not too far off 😢🤮🤢😢 CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. These people need to be held accountable for the destruction of families. What is the sense of getting a medical license, when you can claim "we didn't know no better". Hold them accountable 🐾

I agree psychiatrists should be held accountable. They hide under civil medical malpractice laws to avoid criminal prosecution. They should be held accountable under criminal law for assault and fraud because this is what they do for profits.

I'm 51. 10 months off Effexor after 10 years of 150mg. I have anxiety about everything, regrets and fears of the future, low motivation, overwhelm, anhedonia. I'm religious and keep wondering - is it discontinuation syndrome, is it menopause? Or is it some demonic oppression? Is my mind so weakened that I am more susceptible to spiritual attacks? Am I a slothful coward? The self-hatred for past mistakes and current weakness is overwhelming and leaves me hopeless. Life feels like a prison.

I am going through the exact same feelings. I'm 54, been on Effexor for almost 20 years. I've had two red hot goes at getting off it in the last 4 years. It's excruciating. I'm loosing everything. I have the anxiety, tears deep regret and absolute fear of the future. I just want to feel peaceful and happy instead of wanting to end it. I wonder how long we have to fight to get this out of our system?

Everybody in the profession knows there are major problems with the drugs, but will not speak out, they would be out of a job. The System is so well potected with legislation and criteria, The phychiatrists know they can get away with just about anything, and are duty bound to defend the drugs and treatment plans .They are very well paid 4 days with the NHS and one day private is normal £3000 per week. They will not rock the boat and speak out.

You dont have to be "misbehaving" to have your life ruined by the mental health system. You can be a victim of domestic violence and just looking for help and end up with a bogus diagnosis and forced into the system. Its disgusting how victims of abuse are pathologized and medicalized and lose their credibilty and the abusers are not held accountable or pathologized at all. Distress from abuse is not mania..stop making stuff up to give people pills and ruining their lives.

I got rid of Lorazepam after taking it for 7 years (5mg) Slowly taper over almost 2 years, gradually reducing the dose and sometimes taking a break and keeping it constant over time. Keep it strong people, it will be very difficult whenever you reduce your dose, but worth it in the end. I feel so much better. Super happy I got rid of this 💪😀

In the book The REAL Dr. Fauci it talks about how the drug manufacturers were questioning the safety and wanted guarantees they wouldn't sued so they got the law makers to shield them from lawsuit. I'm sure there is someone challenging this but you are not gonna hear about it on the news. I recommend reading the book if you want to get angry.

I cannot help but wonder, how all of these there's no chemical imbalance I've got a PhD brigade, sell books, and tickets for expensive conferences. I quickly googled this lady, in the hope of some assistance, but that essentially sends me to her group network, which not being a shrink, would not allow me, which sends me to a hearing voices network. Basically the advice on the site is, talk to you somebody you trust, or if you can't do that, see a GP. They have a list of hearing voices groups, according to their site, there's only 3 in the whole of Yorkshire, and 2 of those are run by mind, who won't even let you get your foot in the door, without sticking a periscope up your arse 1st. I myself don't believe in chemical imbalance, nor have I ever believed it. But neither do I believe in these quacks that offer zero help, and change nothing, except adding to their own bank balance
