I remember the two gun characters from Bushido Blade 2 being the HARDEST fights. A wannabe cowboy (so annoying) and a chick with a carbine...meanwhile you have a sword or polearm.

Shoutout to SF6 for really upping the taunt game. Akuma has a minute long taunt that turns him into shin Akuma and Bison has a taunt that resets the timer on his bomb to sync with the taunt

bro this game is so rigged i can't stand it. this morning i gained something like 150 elo and i was one match away from plat (i've already been plat in the past, i just restarted playing a couple weeks ago). as i said i was just one match away and i started matching up against diamond and high-plat players or spammers.

Stylized, cel-shaded 3D > 2D It is much easier to upscale 3d models (just by bumping the internal resolution) than 2D sprites And graphics of those 3d games don't age that much because they don't aim for photorealism

If you want an example of how expensive it is to developp a 2D fighting game, take KoF XIII. This game is one of the most beautiful to see, even nowadays (and it's still fun to play, even if there's a lot less characters than in KoF XIV or XV), but making all the sprites for this game almost killed (again) SNK because this was way too expensive to make. After that, for KoF XIV, they decided to switch to 3D sprites, just because they needed it financially

my heart prefers sprites, but my brain knows better. sprites can look good, but not always. let us not forget the plethora of trash looking digitized sprites of the 80s and 90s. if a company is really willing to put out a great effort, 2d is simply just a joy to view. SNK demonstrates that in almost all of their 2d games. Metal Slug is a great example of achingly beautiful sprite work. but if they dont have the budget, time and/or skill, 3d can be a great equalizer. and 3d does allow for alot more camera angles, which is a boon in of itself. i really like what Arc is doing, taking the best of both mediums and blending them together. hell, maybe capcom should just let Arc handle the visuals for a SF entry, like a new darkstalkers. the 2d/3d blend would be awesome for the more cartoony morphs the darkstalkers sprites would demonstrate.

My favorite fighting style was shadow fight. Since it was based on more realistic mouvement, you will swing your weapon logically and plan you hit. The reason why big weapon tend to be bad in that game is because you are realisticly slow and its super hard to land a hit that way compared to the spear wich is one of the best weapon because of big range for super fast attack speed.

DNF Duel is a pretty good game now, but the damage is done. I would love to see it get the treatment GBVS got, but that seems a bit unlikely. I actually like this game better in some ways, but it's hard not to compare them, and as a product its inferior (less content, smaller roster). I love DNF and hope it sticks around as a niche pick, but there's always gonna be bigger games pulling people away from it. Multiversus did a couple key things that made it unplayable for me. The 2nd biggest was not having a block button, to me that just made the game feel "less" than Smash. The big killer though, was not being able to easily play the game offline. Not supporting local play in a platform fighter is like a cardinal sin, I don't understand how people were able to play this game. DOA5 is, in my opinion, the most under rated 3d fighter of all time (with good reason but still). The "Visual appeal" was a successful marketing strategy for them, but detractors like to take this as evidence of a low quality game, never taking a look under the hood. The actual gameplay was fire, plus it had tag battles, so playing that game with a group of friends, even casually, was mega fun. You just stick the stronger players with the weaker players and teach them how to team combo, suddenly you got 4 people having a great time. I also like that there was no meter in the game, and the big super move was a big charge move that you typically had to combo into. I could go on about how landing that blowback super was cool (it had an environmental aspect as well, and it could be countered if you call it out, the stun system was wild), or how it had the best roster of any DOA (4 guest characters from virtua fighter and Mai from FF). The point is, DOA 6 lost the plot. The overly stimulating characters are something I feel the game gets undeserved criticism for, seeing as how Tekken characters are just as unrealistic. You could argue the exorbitant price to get all the bikinis was ridiculous, and you'd be right, but let me just point out that cosmetics are now the industry standard for continued monetization of your game, and we hardly bat an eye about it now. In that regard the game was ahead of its time (still not a good thing, they went pretty crazy with their dress up dolly games). Enough time has passed that I can see why people aren't usually willing to have this conversation with me. In the other side of things, before Tekken 8 came out I found myself wanting to play other 3d Fighters, so I was rotating VF5, T7, and DOA5. Obviously I'm biased to prefer DOA5, but while I was there one of the people I played with left me with a bad experience that put things in perspective. He would not play the game if you locked in a male character, and if the outfit you picked wasn't showing enough skin, he would tell you "you pick bad outfits" and try to encourage you to pick a "beauty outfit." It was super cringe, and in general I hate it when dead game communities do things like this that keep games dead. How am I supposed to convince people to play this with me knowing they might have to deal with that? So while the decision to move away from "appeal" towards a more Esports style was kinda questionable, since that was such a part of the game's identity, it was also kinda necessary in a way. It is hard to know what would have happened if they had stuck to their "guns" (hehe), but they definitely missed both marks with 6. Frankly, I think the meter was a bad move, I find that 3d Fighters in general need to avoid meters like 2d, Soul Calibur 5 is unplayable to me, and 6 was kinda meh, but part of that is just...meters in 3d Fighters are weird. T8 heat is probably the only exception, they thought really hard about how that was going to make the game better instead of just adding it just to make the game flashier.

Does Cerebellum from Skullgirls count? She has a pretty big range for her moves like her forward + heavy, even though she's about as big as Fillia (the Millia inspired "shoto" character for the game). Beowulf in the same game has Grendel's arm, which definitely counts as an oversized weapon but he only uses it for his super and if he's not wielding his trusty folding chair, even then, only on his heavy moves.

I don't know if it counts, but the character that caught my attention and got me into fighting games was Chang Koehan. I remember walking by the arcades and seeing Chang and the ball he uses as a weapon, it looked menacing, he instantly became my favorite character without even playing the game lol

I don't know... I think if certain features are scaled back it could be possible... SF6 took 4-5 years, had a team of about 300, and is estimated to have cost as much as $20 million. Third Strike on the other hand took 3 years, had only 13 people working on it, and cost $8 million. It had a troubled development (no one on the original team had ANY experience with fighting games) and they had to bring on Shinichiro Obata (from Darkstalkers) to save the project. It would never make "all the money" like shareholders want though, so likely it will be indie teams who could deliver. What we need is financial viability... we need a type of game that doesn't NEED huge cut scenes, story modes, and flashy effects; likely focusing on the competitive aspects and if anything innovating on the training mode (people keep playing fighting games when they become good at them; it's a huge barrier to entry). We need a way to make sprite work and animations faster, which would greatly reduce costs. This actually seems like something AI would be perfect for...

SF6 is the only fighting game of the “realistic” bunch to have a distinctive art direction, a lot of the RE Engine games from Capcom are so good at this because they have a team of talented artists. When you look at Western AAA developers that push too hard for realism, most of their games end up falling flat because they don’t have good art direction. Making them more forgettable than memorable.
