Carol Richard - Sleep Success Academy

Carol Richard - Sleep Success Academy

We empower sleep-deprived individuals to become their own sleep gurus by providing them with the education, tools, structure, and support to get their sleep back on track so they get back to living life on their terms with the Sleep Success Academy.

Imagine how different your life would be if you could learn how to be your own sleep guru and overcome your sleep issues once and for all.

Many sleep programs focus only on behaviors, missing a key part of how sleep is disrupted by your emotional well-being and by limiting beliefs that might be getting in the way of your sleep.

That's why we focus on all three components to better sleep in the Better Sleep Community:

1. Emotional well-being (emotions and the state of the nervous system)
2. Mindset (thoughts and beliefs)
3. Behaviors

Armed with this education, new tools, and the ability to become your own sleep guru, you will be able to create better sleep for yourself, today and in the future.

    I admit i got panicky when i hear of people not sleeping for days continously. So it truns out that hyperarousal creates this and they actually sleep more than they think or percive? So you don't actualy get stuck in little sleep.

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach2 ай бұрын

    Correct, hyperarousal can make it hard for us to fall asleep and stay asleep. We might "feel" like we've been awake all night because we woke up often. However, we are most likely getting some sleep, just not aware of it.

  • @VladulescuRad

    @@carolrichardsleepcoach so this means physicaly it is imposibile to get "stuck" in very short sleep, objectively speaking.

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach2 ай бұрын

    @@VladulescuRad I believe that statement to be true. We might get stuck in many nights of poor sleep, but we get some sleep each night. And if we have one night of absolutely no sleep, we will build enough sleep drive to sleep the next night. And then it would also depend on your definition of short sleep. Some people might think anything less than 7.5 hours is short sleep. LOL While other people think anything less than 3 hours is short sleep.

    Thank you for the video. I've always struggled with sleep all my life, even as a young, active boy. Recently, it has gotten worse since the pandemic/ Work-from-home. Some nights, I don't sleep, but then I can sleep for several days. It's so odd! It can be challenging. When you suffer with anxiety and beat your safety strategies, it does get better. But your advice definitely does help. But I know watching videos like this sadly increases one's anxiety. So I'd best go, but thanks for the video!

    I am so grateful that my advice is helping you sleep better. I agree, watching videos like this can increase one's anxiety. However, it can also help you understand what you need to work on in order to get better sleep. I don't believe that emotions are good or bad, rather they provide us with information about our current life and by listening to our emotions, it can guide us in making the changes necessary to create a better life for ourselves. Thank you so much for commenting that the videos are helpful. ❤️

    Is meditation the same as napping?

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach2 ай бұрын

    My belief is that no - meditation is not the same as taking a nap on a biological level. Any tools we use like meditation, tapping, orienting, etc. or any type of mindfulness helps bring regulation in our nervous system and does not deplete our sleep drive. Unless we fall asleep during it, which I've done numerous times. 😁

    Genuine question here: is it possible that somatic work in itself can become an elaborate, anxiety-inducing sleep effort…? 🤔 Thank you btw for this thought-provoking video. 😘

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach4 ай бұрын

    @1timbarrett This is such a good question. And yes, any tool we use, even somatic work itself, can become anxiety-inducing. Especially if we are using it from a desperate energy of needing to fix ourselves or our sleep. However, when we can shift our mindset around the work and come at it from compassion and understanding, it reduces anxiety. I've recorded a video to answer this question, which will come out in a few weeks. I can explain it more in a video. When doing somatic work, it really needs to be titrated (meaning slow and steady) and not push too far or too fast. We need the nervous system to have time to integrate the work. And sometimes, when it goes slow - we feel the anxiety because we want it to go faster. Does that make sense?

    I usually can fall asleep, but I wake up in the middle… like 1-3 am, and getting back to sleep becomes really hard!

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach4 ай бұрын

    Yes, many people have this same issue. My first curious question is what is happening in your mind when you wake up? Are there any limiting beliefs showing up? Does your mind say things like: Now that I'm awake, I won't be able to fall asleep again. And then we can get frustrated and make our wake up time even worst. However, when we know that it's normal to wake up 5 or 6 times during the night, it takes the frustration away and we can go back to sleep easier. Here is a video I did a while ago about waking up in the night. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lH1osrWGcaSwnbg.html And I always suggest getting out of bed to do some tapping. I off 3 tapping meditations for free on my website, and one of them is about Tapping in the middle of the night. You can get them here: www.sleepsuccessacademy.com/FreeResources If you have further questions, don't hesitate to reach out. Hugs, Carol

    If I do nap, should I nap in total darkness? Or is napping with sunlight coming through the windows helping my circadian rhythm stay okay?

  • @carolrichardsleepcoach
    @carolrichardsleepcoach6 ай бұрын

    Hi Regina. I see naps differently. When we nap, it takes away from our sleep drive, so we should avoid napping as much as possible. My instinct is that it would not matter if we napped in darkness or daylight, but I have not come across any information on this so far in all my research and sleep education. Even if not napping would be the preferred way, I never say not to nap. Depending on what's going on, for example, if we are fighting a cold or sickness, we need more sleep, and a nap might be beneficial and not affect our sleep schedule each night. Does this help?

  • @regina6838
    @regina68386 ай бұрын

    @@carolrichardsleepcoach Yes, thanks. I try not to. I really thought there would.be some.informarion somewhere on darkness or light during naps. Even Andrew Huberman says he likes to nap but I haven't heard him give these details. I avoid naps but when I do it's always for 3 hours which is so long and I usually don't feel very good when I wake up and of course it disturbs my bedtime that night.

    Hi, it sounds like your nervous system is stuck in hyperarousal activation (fight or flight). So many things can cause our nervous system to stay stuck and give us that wide awake feeling all night. I would be interested in chatting with you. Go to my website (www.sleepsuccessacademy.com) and see if you can book a time to chat with me. I would love to hear more about your story and what was happening 35 years ago that might be the cause of your continued poor sleep. Big hugs your way. Carol
