    Nice example, cheers. Do you know what current (Amps.) the lamp drew when arcing, or even the Wattage, I think it was mains voltage (240v). I love old technology and I believe my late uncle made these in a factory called PIFCO on Oldham road, Failsworth, Manchester. UK, I think it was in the 1950's Cheers, John (UK)

    That's right this does run directly on mains voltage. I actually didn't know the power draw, so I've just done a few tests, and it turns out when everything's warmed up, the operating current is about 5 amps, so give or take about 1200W when it's running. It will momentarily draw more power on initial start up, because the current limiting ballast is cold, and it will briefly allow more current to flow before it heats up and everything balances out. So on initial spark up you'll see about 1500W but it doesn't take long, no more than ten seconds or so for it to settle down to 1200W. It'll run at this with the electrodes shorted out ("IR Mode" where all that happens is you get a lot of heat off the ballast coil), or when it's arcing, because an open arc like that will draw as much current as it's able to, which in this case is limited by that ballast, so it'll be 1200W either way. Thank you for prompting me to measure this, I've been meaning to for a while!

    @@ShokaLion Brilliant my friend, thank you so much for affording me your time.The analysis figures are most helpful and points to me using old cabling which fed a old 8Kwh electric shower. That cabling is on a separate RCB using 10mm twin and earth and is only 4 years old so it's in good nick. Here's to smoking some rods and hopefully not too much RF interference to my neighbours. Cheers, John PS. If the device uses 5 amp at 230v I think Ohms Law put the ballast at 48ohms 😉

    @@happytuber3669 Haha indeed! To be honest I only run the thing once in a blue moon, just really as a curio for friends. Exposure to that light for long isn't that great for you after all, plus yeah, I'd probably be causing huge consternation to any ham radio enthusiasts in the immediate area! As to the impedance of the ballast, it'd be interesting to check that with a meter but that wouldn't be trivial I think, at least not to get the working impedance. Cold impedance would be easy - it's right there after all just probe it with a multimeter. But of course you'll get a lower measurement than you'd get when the thing is up to working temperature. Be interesting to directly measure but yeah, good old Ohm's Law pretty much makes it unnecessary. Maybe I'll get the cold measurement just to see out of idle interest. Not tonight though, bit too late to be clattering around with a multimeter at this time of night!

    @@ShokaLion Thanks for yet another great reply. The actual impedance of the ballast, using the approximate initial 1500 start wattage draw that you indicated should place it around 38ohms. Thereafter settling to 1200 watts would indicate around 48ohms. (Hopefully, using bog standard Ohms law calculation as you'll appreciate). Please don't go to any extraordinary lengths on my behalf in establishing such values, unless it's for your own interest of course. If you do eventually 'succumb' to that 'need to know' complex we humans possess, I'd welcome the cold ballast resistance for reference. By the time this reply arrives you'll hopefully be in the 'land-of-nod'. 😉🛌🛌

    @@happytuber3669 i.imgur.com/tLvcpH2.jpg Ohm's law wins out again, give or take a slight fudge factor to account for corroded connections, and the centre point of the ballast connection having to go through the touching carbon electrodes. Close enough to prove the numbers I'd say though. :)

    In some cases, games like Duke Nukem 3D will support SVGA resolutions. But, there's nothing you can do about the DSTN screen, unless you use an external monitor. You said it can diminish its worth as a gaming machine, but it may be diminished anyway if the battery is dead. Like actually dead, can't hold a charge anymore. Not trying to hate, but just bringing up a few points.

  • @ShokaLion
    @ShokaLion6 жыл бұрын

    Fair comments. I know some DOS games worked in SVGA, but a lot didn't, if you were going for a DOS machine specific, you'd pick one that would play most games in the most pleasing way, I'd reckon. Battery wise, that laptop is actually pretty good. You can get an hour out of it, which isn't bad for a twenty year old laptop. In any case most people who have these old machines aren't planning to take them on the train with them, they're just a much neater way to do true DOS gaming on a machine of the era (as opposed to having a full 486/Pentium desktop machine set up.

    Now I know it's ancient history already, but...A little single drive unit can do more than offer good sound. It can be amazing and do more in some areas than any big multi unit speaker. First it is small and has low moving mass, it will respond to transients well. It will have an extended HF range, but no bass unfortunately. More important it will not have any phase issues or crossover problems. You can simply put this little thing in a simple baffle, ie a flat bit of wood, no box and see how it transforms, try it with a little sub woofer and sometimes if you are lucky you get a feel of absolute high end audio...mind you - only a feel of it... All for 2 quid??

  • @ShokaLion

    There's actually a mechanism behind that... What it is, is that the deep THX style bass is made by the console, then the sword-draw shing noise comes off the disc, and they're designed to artfully overlap. But if the console is getting a bit old and tired, like mine is, the games don't load as quick as they did, so the result is a more drawn out intro like that. :) That's why PS1 games run on the PS2, or any bought on the Playstation Store only have the second part of the sound. The deep bass was built into the playstation.

  • @ShokaLion
    @ShokaLion9 жыл бұрын

    To be honest these are kind of in a league of their own. The majority of clocks of old, as you may well know, were powered either by a wound spring, or by gravity (via weights), and the timekeeping reference is derived typically using a pendulum of some description, or (in smaller mechanical clocks like wristwatches and alarm clocks) using what was called a balance wheel. The point with clocks such as the one in the video is the power source is an electric synchronous motor, which as well as acting as the power source also doubles as the time reference. Synchronous motors you see are made to spin at a very specific rotational speed which is determined by the frequency of the incoming power source, in this particular case, 240 volts, at a frequency of 50 hz (or cycles per second). This frequency is extremely tightly controlled, for reasons of intereference between different power sources (or power stations) causing problems in the delivery of said power to consumers if the frequency wasn't stable. This, happily, gives a ready made highly accurate timekeeping source, which synchronous clocks take advantage of. So, beyond the motor, you have a fairly standard gear train, to gear down the relatively high speed of the motor down to hours, minutes and in some clocks (though not this one) seconds. The synchronicity of the mains supply is so tightly controlled that over time, synchronous clocks are actually notably more accurate than modern battery quartz clocks. It's just, I suppose, the convenience of a battery powered clock as against having a mains supply wired into the wall everywhere you want a wall clock, or having to sacrifice a mains socket everywhere you want one sat on the side, or the mantelpiece or wherever, outweighs the accuracy advantage in most peoples' eyes. And anyway, a lot of modern clocks are radio synchronized with the atomic time standard, and no stand alone clock will ever be as accurate as that. The march of progress. I just like old stuff! Hope that was infomative. :)

  • @martinda7446
    @martinda74467 жыл бұрын

    Lovely video. The pessimistic view is as follows ;o) The mains supply is generated by large rotating machinery (good). The electric companies guarantee the frequency somewhere in +/- 0.5hz region (bad). When the demand is varying the rotational frequency will alter too as they are put under load. A synchronous motor is locked to the mains frequency. Luckily the variations tend to average out over the day and indeed over long periods tend toward the mean value. But you can't truly offer a clock with better accuracy than that offered by the supplier. Worst case is approx 1 cycle error in 50 - if the electric company stick to their guarantee. This is of course poor for a clock. In practice though it is of course much more likely to be nearer your expectation - unless you are timing an event, where you could not ever be sure of accuracy at any one point. This is also an issue for audiophiles who have their turntables locked to mains and many other applications too. Wonder how these clocks run in places with dodgy electricity supply though? To get a truly excellent accuracy it is very easy to generate 50 or 60hz to much greater precision and without the noise you get from the mains - The same audiophiles with their turntables have got plenty of supplies that will run a clock (as well as a turntable) accurately, but you would pay silly prices. You can make one for 5 or 6 quid / dollars. I just love old stuff too.

  • @martinda7446
    @martinda74467 жыл бұрын

    PS. The mains frequency of course was responsible for our TV timebase too the field frequency of 50hz was because of the mains. Though of course the video from the camera had the trigger pulses to ensure the lock was synchronous with the broadcast. US 60 cycles.
