Brown Trout Guy

Brown Trout Guy

My passion for stream fishing started with my dad. From a very early age, we’d go out for a few hours. He’d buy a dozen dew worms in an old soup can and off we’d go. I always knew where he was because the hummed when he fished. Maybe that’s why we never caught a big speckled trout but that humming is a 60 year old memory. Makes me smile still.
I call my fishing CPR, catch, photo, release. The photo part began when I’d say to my wife, “you wouldn’t believe the fish I caught today.” And her response was always, “no I wouldn’t.” So I went out and bought a small waterproof camera which hung from my neck each fishing session.
I had been thinking about go pro technology but at 76, all that new stuff was a bit too much. Then my daughter introduced me to someone who was computer literate. He told me to catch the fish and he’d edit the footage.
Hallelujah
So presently I’m wandering back in the bush where I’ve fished for 45 years.
Hope you like the videos.
Sincerely
Big brown trout guy

Hello to you. Good to see your name and know that things are fine. I know the feeling of wanting to get out, almost in spite of the weather. That video Alfred put out of the ‘little’ stream that became a rushing torrent, was not 1 of my finest decisions…..but I wanted to see how bad it really was! And, it was! Some inclement weather for our upcoming national holiday and add the high humidity, there’ll be no fishing here. Hope you get out for some wild browns! Cheers to you Rob

Hi. Great to see your comment. When I was just starting fishing with my dad and then later, alone, it was always Brook trout, never saw a brown but certainly heard a lot about them. Realized I might be fishing in water that was too cold for them, 68oF and not the 72 that they can tolerate. And you’re right, I knew the browns were there, I just didn’t understand the stream well enough to get their interest. It took 3 seasons and many misses to start catching the fish you see in episode 4 from last year and Alfred’s 23” brown from 1 of the last videos, the 1 where I need help getting out of the muck! Anyway, Alfred and I are still trying to catch several biggies from that stream before the aquatic plant chokes the waterways. So keep on trying as it’s great to be outdoors and sounds like you’re pretty successful with what you’re doing! Again, thanks for your thoughts, they are appreciated. Hi, good to hear from you again. In the streams where we fish, there’s a secondary bait fish called a chub or shiner. They are generally smaller than the fish we’re looking for! When we catch 1, and they’re a nuisance as they steal the bait/worm, destined for a trout, we use their tail as bait. I cut off the end portion and put the hook through the tail. Big fish love eating smaller fish, and it doesn’t seem to matter that there’s only the tail! I’ll remember to show you on a future video. I’ll remember also to mention it in the description so you’ll know it’s there somewhere inthevideo. Again, thanks for watching the stuff Alfred gets out. We both love what we do! Cheers Rob

Good day to you Ya, 1st time I’ve done radio play by play catching a fish. What a dork! And that’s what I thought too, who would believe a fisherman’s tale so as I sat beside the fish, watching it recover, I figured I needed a shot of it on land, not in the water as appearances can be deceiving. So I put the gp down, got up, bent over and picked it up. Amazing really that it didn’t bolt. Having a backup pole is important, especially when the stores are closed. That’s a bummer. Just back from a long day. Alfred will have to do another video but he doesn’t mind. This truly was a BIG female. I want to talk to my fisheries friend about it. The last video had a 28” brown also but it’s small in comparison. This one was caught on a 3” piece of worm. Chub, shiners are small bait fish that frequent all streams. They are a food source for bigger fish. If I catch one, I repurpose it by using its tail, discarding the rest for raccoons, mink and other land creatures that roam these woods. I attach the tail to my hook and then use that as a means to catch the browns. They appear to love that combo in any of the streams I fish. Glad you liked the video, pretty awesome fish. Cheers

Ha, I told him to get a gp and start another site. He’s good enough to do it! Remember, anything if fishable north of Guelph and just south of James bay! Cheers

give us a how to video. What gear do we need? what do we look for in a stream?

Hi again. Glad Alfred keeps me up to date and again, sorry for the delay. A video like that would be interesting and I’ll have to work on that. I’ve tried to mention things in each video as they cross my mind. The latest video mentions that browns like feeding low. I’ve had them watch a chub tail or a worm on a small split shot if needed, as the bait goes by them. I swear they’re sizing up the food. Then they’ll turn around quickly, go behind the bait and attack. They’re really cool as they feign indifference! I’ll try to mention lots of things I’ve found in the upcoming videos! Assuming the fish will comply. Again thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Cheers BTG

It may not be Patagonia but if you told me it was the Amazon I would have believed you. What we have in our own backyards is spectacular.

Good evening. Sorry I haven’t replied as I don’t always get back to viewing S often as I should. Alfred mentioned today that you’d left a message. Can’t agree with you more. That’s the total package of fishing, just being out there. It’s not just the fish. Alfred put up another video today. Just an awesome way to start a new season. Makes me smile as I’m writing you. Trust your time outdoors is as rewarding. Cheers BTG

Thank you for sharing. I hope I'm still stalking big browns like that when I'm your age. Greetings from Ireland

Good evening Garry of the Emerald Isle. I apologize for not returning your message. I haven't looked at them for a while and Alfred mentioned something today about your messages. It was a great start to the season yesterday. Hope you enjoy Alfred’s editing. It certainly was a fun day. And we plan to have a few more videos like that. We just have to make sure the fish understand! Cheers and good health. BTG

John, you are absolutely right! That’s why I laughed as my dad had done the exact same thing when I was little! Episode 4 has a similar occurrence but with a different result, thank goodness!

Yes, I have 3 streams that I have fished for 45 years. And because I catch and release, I hope to fish for the next 45 years. But yes, you are right this hole is great. There always seems to be a big guy lurking and this year the Olympic swimmer showed up. Quite a surprise. Have a good winter.
