Ely is not named after eels although the fact Christianity claimed it was them that done so is no surprise. Élig is anglo saxon for higher. Hence ely is actually named quite sensibly from the simple fact its higher. Yet another example of the church making it up as they go along

My family in Belize, formally British Honduras, have told me similar stories which seem to be local beliefs of the Mayan community. My uncle was deer hunting with two Mayan guides when they heard dogs barking. The guides told him to hide behind a fallen tree and stay quiet. My uncle clearly heard dogs pass, but there seemed to be no evidence of their passing. The guides told him that those are the hunting dogs of "El Dueño del Monte," The Lord of the Forest. If you see the dogs you will have to join the hunt and never be seen again.

If it was a pure invention they would have made it larger. Its rearing up and feeding on rabbits and casting forth venom makes it sound like a cobra. It could have been an exotic brought over as part of a private collection of exotics that then got free.

I may be the only person alive with photographic proof of a black dog grim, gravetender...taken Aug.2021, then before winter about 100 black dogs but different than the 7ft tall 300lb very bright red glowing eyes dog these more of a spirit dog, bright yellow eyes with black slash or pupils, eyes do glow right before sunset but they are orange for about 2 hrs after sunset then the glow turns to the common green and yellow all night..I have 1 facial photo of hellhound, 3 of its eyes right before attack.. some photos of new hybrid coi and old Gresham greys- that my parents and their friends used to hunt back in 70"s,-82..apparently they did#n't kill all of em and they're back I n huge numbers ×

I live in Ely. Have recently walked the area from which William the conqueror laid siege to Ely. You can still see the raised ground used as a port used by him to bring in material to conduct the battle. Seems to me the place is full of history but no one seems to want to celebrate it.

@@joesinclair8910 I'm lost. At the time of the Norman Conquest, Billy is right in saying it was not the Saxons as they had come from continental Europe a good 5-600 years prior to this, so there would of been a mixture of who was here before and the Saxons, aka the Anglo-Saxons who are quite widely regarded as the beginning of what is known as England. How does the far right/neo nazi/white supremacist thing fit into this?
