Dr Jon @ the dark sky cabin
7 years ago I purchased a large bush block in Queensland’s dividing range. It is very remote, needing a well set up 4WD to reach safely and it has very dark skies. I am going to use this channel to share my adventures as I manage the block, restore a large telescope from the 1970s and try to understand the ecosystem around me.

Ahhh what is that A butifel polarex telescope
Thanks Kiwi! Your collection is awesome! And I love your videos!!
Sorry - I forgot to add the link for the plating www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/14kjybw/a_detailled_diy_electroplating_guide_copper_and/
Indeed! The OTA has a total length of 2.7 meters with the dew shield. The cradle is nearly 9 feet off the ground to keep the eyepiece at a reasonable height.
that's one big pier!!!
I can hear the bellbirds in the background around the 7 minute mark! Lovely restoration.
Yes - good pick! One of the many reasons I love this place. At night you can hear the powerful owls calling to each other and occasionally Koalas. Thanks for the kind words about the restoration davepastern.
@@JonHarris-ri1vj I could hear a Brown Honeyeater in the background of 1 of the other videos. I was lucky enough to capture some images of Powerful Owls last September/October. I won't reveal the location in order to protect the birds, but I was so happy to see these alpha raptors. You've done a superb job with that telescope and mount restoration.
Brilliant details on your restoration! I’ve been specializing in collecting the smaller Takahashi FC series “classics” from the ‘80’s and ‘90’s but recently won a TS-50 f/14 in classic black and white from the ‘70’s along with its mount from a different auction. I’m sure I can follow some of your steps to refinish a long focus refractor in miniature.
Thank you so much Chris! Taks are amazing scopes but you probably know that very well. So did I read that right - you are making a mini-Tak? Kudos to you
@@JonHarris-ri1vj, to be sure, it’s already a miniature. I have always appreciated the beauty of the long focus refractor. Mine will not have as many of the embellishments that a 6” Polarex will have, but it will still have some of the sweeping form and grace, but hopefully won’t take me 300 hours working on one part! I salute your drive!!
