    One constant thing you could say about Roberto Moreno is that he always seemed to get the best out of sub-standard equipment, he even managed to qualify for 1992 Monaco GP in an Andrea Moda car

    No matter how much good luck you threw at them they didn't have a shot. Without a works deal they'd have died off in the 2000s and Wirth made some terrible design choices at Benetton and Virgin so they wouldn't have made it that far without someone talented to guide him. He designed bad cars for a well funded team with a good number of engineers and that wouldn't have been any less the case with fewer staff

    I would say that over time, the technical alliance with Benetton evolves into sharing aero parts, so Simtek starts running Benetton-esque cars with raised noses and the like. After I'm done with the Pacific video I'm doing a long what-if scenario where I put most of these together. I'll make the Benetton partnership more fleshed out there.

    "His son Max makes F1 more boring to watch". lol. I wonder if Max is actually a what-if if Jos gets fortunate to drive on better teams. And yes, it's a popular meme about "The Jos Verstappen Project". I give it a like since I love the story of Simtek despite its tragic short stint in F1. I like the what-if of them too. Kind of agreeable at some sort.

    If only that last car had the reliability. The drivers said it was good, but it was let down by the engine power and the gear boxes. Especially the gear boxes. I think a lot of results for a lot of smaller and/or customer teams would have been different if the rules had been more like today when it came to engines, where the customer teams HAD to have the same spec engines as the works teams. Edit: Oof... I just got to that point in the video, I forgot Jeff Krosnoff's name was on the same car as his... It's sad because Jeff Krosnoff was killed at the Molson Indy Race in Toronto, the same accident killed a track marshall.

    Wow! What a story, thanks for presenting it! Even taking Roland's unfortunate death out it was still wild. Things I did not expect to hear: "...tore his foot off" and "...let F1 for BTCC". Nothing against BTCC, I've been a fan of it for quite a while, it was just not expected in an F1 story.

    “Tore his foot off” I actually said “Tore his foot UP”, as in he broke his right foot. “Tore it up” is how my family has described damage and injuries for years. As far as I know, Andrea Montermini still has his foot.

  • @Bobcat205
    @Bobcat20511 күн бұрын

    It's less a matter of talent and more a matter of age. I don't know of very many teams that would take a chance on a guy entering his second season at 34 years old. Money might be an issue too, he only had 5 races worth of sponsorship. If I painted Roland as a guy that didn't have talent, that was unintentional.

    He had talent and determination and if fate hadn't intervened he would of been in f1 in 1995 for sure theres a good interview by rolands engineer at simtek on sky, johnny herbert knew the talent was there to in fact. And loads of others age nigel mansell was still in f1 at 42 so age is irrelevant

    If indycar ever get to build its new tracks it NEEDS to rebuild the Rio oval with the exact same dimensions but just with deep tire barriers and safer walls on the corners …… really miss that track as it was an hybrid off oval and road racing without being an roval ……that and I’d love them to run a dirt surface race not necessarily on a oval like NASCARs Bristol dirt but could be a simple-ish road course …… also I do miss the Indy road race not using the banked corner fully onto the home straight like f1 did … you could have an 3rd race away indy in a season with using the slightly faster road course in the fall.

    Some corrections Franco Rocchi sold the engine rights to Vita who was the one who then tried to sell the engine to a "Well funded F1 team" in a massive get rich quick scheme. As you said, nobody bought it. When all the back marker teams also told him to FO, THEN Vita decided to enter F1 himself because he wanted to prove them wrong. Vita never had a dream of anything other than getting rich off the engine, something that failed miserably due to the engine being undeveloped (Vita had no money himself to do that), the chassis being a flowerpot and the team itself being undermanned (due to having no money). Despite this, LIFE is not generally regarded to be the worst team ever (just the worst car) because while they may have fluked one qualification, Andrea Moda has that honour because at least LIFE never tried to KILL one of their drivers and weren't thrown out of the sport for being a criminal.

    3m06 - The reason for no airbox on the T95/30 was the FIA technical rule, which mandate a hole in the airbox visible from the front for less airflow to the engine. A rule that was eleminated from the 95 San Marino GP. Some team like, Forti didn't have airbox on top of the engine for the first 2 GP, with the airbox entry located at the back of the sidepods (thus not visible from the front of the car, so no need to have hole) and some project like the Lola and Dome 1st wind tunnel model who didn't have airbox. 3:50 - You said Mastercard money came a bit too late for 1995 or there was not enough for 1996. The deal with Mastercard was only announced on November 05, 1996 6:29 - Actually, the car was tested before going to Melbourne. Two-cars shakedown run on the Santa Pod dragstip over the weekend of February 22 & 23 and then at Silverstone on February 26 (it was schuduled for a 2 days test, but I only have confirmation for the 26). (Autosport February 27 & March 06)

    In a perfect world, he would have: there was a proposed “Fighting Fund” in the mid-2000s, which was a grant that would have given lower-grid teams financial support if they needed it. It would have kept Minardi afloat had it not been shut down after a vote. If something like that existed, Lola likely would have gotten it and survived the year, maybe…

    -Pic shown at 1:10 is not Paolo Guerci. It's former F1 driver René Arnoux who was driver coach to Pedro Diniz in 1995. -The FG01 gearbox did not use a H pattern. It was a sequential one. Only thing was that it still use a lever (last F1 to do so) instead of paddles on the steering wheel. -FG03 did not make it's 1st appearence at Monaco, but at the previous race at Imola, where only one chassis was available, for Luca Badoer.

  • @Bobcat205

    -I guess I’m just terrible at recognizing faces, I did not see that as Rene Arnoux. Also didn’t know Arnoux was involved with the team, none of the sources I read said anything about that. -I probably should have specified that Monaco was when it was fully rolled out, with both drivers driving the new car. On a different note, your videos are a godsend, thank you for uploading all of your old F1 footage. I wouldn’t have much b-roll without it.

  • @VkmSpouge
    @VkmSpouge22 күн бұрын

    I think the Fondmetal GR02 is under-rated, the team suffered from a lack of finance to make it reliable but in qualifying trim it was often in the midfield with Tarquini qualifying 11th at the Belgian GP. I think if Fondmetal had the money to invest in making it reliable, the GR02 may have scored some points.

    I don't necessarily *dislike* Michael Schumacher. I do prefer Senna over him. though (I think Jim Clark is better than both of them, but that's a different conversation entirely). All I'm saying is that the Option 13 scandal at Benetton would have been pushed a whole lot farther had Senna not been killed at Imola. Just how much that would have influenced Schumi's career is unknown, but I'd hazard a guess that the big teams would have a sort of "guilty via association" approach to him post-Benetton.

  • @GWFires
    @GWFires22 күн бұрын

    @@Bobcat205 unlikely. the B195 was the car to beat in 95. No result or DNQ would have changed that. Next time when you do Alt-History, go the Benetton-Peugeot line. Its more fun. Also it was more likely that Schumacher would have joined Mclaren for 96 (as three teams wanted to sign him in 95 based on 94). You know that Ligier was also owned by Briatore, so it makes no sense to set his best driver in a slower car.
