DW Planet A

DW Planet A

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

But China can build all the coal plants they want. It's just pollution trading. If the panels were made better they would last.

Use new materials such as aerated concrete blocks and structures like the aforementioned wind tower. The United Nations building is a good example of passive cooling for a building, where wind enters a tower, and the air goes undeground where the temperature is the coldest, and then blown upwards by ordinary fans.

Germany's closure of their nuclear plants is clearly a huge mistake. It totally disregards the danger of global warming. While the rest of the world is looking to nuclear to reduce carbon levels, Germany has done the opposite.

But rice has always been around for so long, it is estimated that rice was grown back as far back as 5000 years bc, and we didn't have major problem, so don't you think that there are plenty of things from modernization that cause more co2 emissions than rice fields?

I am sick of hearing the word "climate change" every time someone talks about tidal power, but I still agree that it would be great if it could be properly harvested.

I've become a fan of nuclear, especially Thorium and SMR designs, over the last ten years and I rather frustrated by the ignorance of and stupid decisions by the German government. But making any comparisons with airplane construction is probably not a good idea considering the recent Boing scandals.

Why not jettison the radioactive nuclear waste on a rocket into outer space off the earth where it would keep drifting further and further away from earth? or send it to France for disposal in France? SpaceX will take the nuclear waste.

Hey there! There are several issues with sending nuclear waste into space. It is very expensive to do so, it adds to the dangerous debris that is already orbitin the Earth and if there is any rocket failure, the radioactive material could be released and end on Earth.

The right way is to stop the chemicals and pesticides and what you are putting even in organic food also the construction of new developments that are taking over the whole nature of the world. So this big companies pay for this kind of information to stop people from doing something that people have been doing since ancient cultures so they can take over the farming and leaves people with no choice but to buy everything full of pesticides and chemicals. But I agree to disagree! All insects are needed that doesn’t mean that if someone wants to have a bee hive they can’t have it if the rest of the world still has everything else it needs. The only reason we are running out of insects and food is because big corporations are ruining everything

Nuclear power is a lifesaving technology that could buy us the time we need to iron out renewable energy. The only concern I have is the risk of incompetent/ greedy people causing a disaster.

Haven't watched the video. That tower doesn't work in a heatwave, just make the building even more hot. AC is very efficient if your building is well insulated, there's 0 issue with using AC. Thick walls won't make a building resistent. My wall is 45-50cm thick and it is absolutely useless during the summer.

Nuclear does not fall under a good idea for decentralization. Just focus on large scale in remote areas. I mean Nevada seems like the perfect place. Or North Dakota. Somewhere if there is serious issues it is far away from people.

One 300MW reactor could power an island. It would be great for many of the island nations. Or an island such as Guam, who buys diesel fuel to power the island. Or countries such as Belize who buy all their power from Mexico.

I wonder what a big 5 masted sailing cargo ship with solar panels covering the entire surface of the deck above the cargo containers and an electric motor could do. Maybe it wouldn't even need a large battery bank for night power either, as it could sail at night, and that much battery could eat into cargo capacity. Might be better to just run the motor at max speed during the day instead of storing some of the power in batteries.
