Why your coffee may soon taste different

Coffee is a daily routine for millions across the globe, but climate change is threatening production. What can be done to avoid a potential shortage?
#planeta #coffee #climatechange
We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

The purpose of the new coffee pods packaging are not intended to enhance taste, texture or aroma but to sinfully entice consumers in to purchasing a new “proprietary” coffee dispensing machine. The use of disposable coffee pods create packaging waste while valuable resources are used to build specific coffee dispensing machines that are only as good as the next newer obsolescent model.

The two methods of brewing coffee uses either gravity or pressure. The best method is the method that makes a good tasting cup of coffee for you. Filtered coffee or Chemix, is considered healthier since the percolation removes substances that elevate cholesterol. Only the most soluble parts of the coffee are obtained. While French press or Expresso method allows these substances to remain in the coffee. This method uses full immersion; allowing the water and coffee to mingle for a longer time dissolving more soluble and insoluble parts (Oils) of the coffee. Both methods allow the used coffee seeds and some biodegradable filters to be composted.

When those machines came into the market, that’s the first thought I had, and I was surprised the “cool” people who immediately wanted their machine and say they care for the planet, didn’t also immediately see what a waste these machines produced in comparison to other methods… Tastewise, I’ve always found these pods to have a weird if subtle common aftertaste also.

The narrator keeps referring to drinks that don't really need high quality coffee (pumpkin spiced latte, Starbucks, morning flat white (if you add a lot of milk)) yet saying robusta doesn't taste "as great". If your standard of coffee drinks contains sugar, milk and flavourings, you likely won't be able to appreciate the subtle notes of high quality arabica beans anyway.

How about paying a more fair price to the producers? sometimes I got the feeling that we just want to improve quality and incomes without take actions at the root of the problems. As many as other crops, very often, companies that transform the crop into the product(s) really don't pay enough for the raw material from the producers and it's a shame. Three time technology won't solve the problems, we (almost) already have many of the technologies needed, and since producers are in low income country, we're just putting technology between us and the producers, which at the end will end up to a bigger gap.

If you mean coffee farmers - they usually receive a relatively small percentage of the final retail price, but the proportion can vary a lot depending on factors like coffee supply chain, location and on the operator. I quit this year. Coffee and caffeine is not good for your health, it's a bad habit. Frankly, coffee itself is bitter and doesn't taste great. Starbucks is a hype machine and ruined many family businesses, serving up tons of sugar and fat laden "coffee" drinks. I was in a coffee co-op many years ago in Costa Rica, before Starbucks. Local coffee was very inexpensive, cheaper than coke, even the poor could afford it. Everyone just boiled the roasted beans in water for 20 min, and added sugar or fresh pressed cane juice to taste. That was the best coffee I ever had.

Really impressed with the HUGE historic mistake about introduction of coffee in the Brazilian economy. I understand that was not the topic of the video, but that’s how fake news starts to spread.

I am concerned for the farmers but no sympathy for the coffee drinkers. The amount of garbage coffee drinking generates from all the paper cups is shocking. Not that many have taken up using a keeper cup. Also these commodity crops that our world relies on are so destructive to our planet, somehow crops need to be carefully managed to fit in with the flora/fauna around it and we all need to reduce our consumption of these crops.

Im not too bothered. Coffee is a bad addiction anyway. I have mostly switched to chicory based bevarages. Yes it tastes different, but after some time you adjust to the flavour. I feel a thousand times better without coffee in my life. I sleep better, i dont have digestive issues anymore, and i feel more alert.

Is the digestive maybe because of all the fiber from the chicory helping your gut microbiota?

I am interested in watching and finishing this video, but, I am tired of all this gloom and doom scenarios that everyone is screaming about. Running out of this or that in like 20-30 years. We still have gas, water, etc. Kind of like chicken little, the sky is falling. Pretty sure this generation will be fine. Just saying.......
