    For sure! Irons would be probably a human size target but with a red dot, it's more accurate than most shooters are going to be. We were able to hit chalk sticks at 25y pretty regularly.

    My reply disappeared into the ether. Maybe because I included a link. ActionBOX put out a YTshort for a desktop metal sls (dmls?) 3dprinter a couple months ago, but the 'long form video' hasn't been put out yet. In the comments they mention it going to be made affordable for hobbyists.

    What it seems is that even though the kick starter met its goals, Henry and Luke did not have the confidence that they could actually deliver a satisfactory machine to the backers. Seems that the backers perhaps dodged loosing their money. Or the alternative take is that Luke and Henry viewed selling Micronics IP to Formlabs and working for them was a better deal for them. No criticism intended as that is a fair path for them to select...it was their hard work and their IP. It is not as if this was a community project with technical and financial input from community members and none of their supporters lost anything, other than some hopes. I don't doubt they have great futures in front of them. My biggest disappointment is that more SLS IP has been locked up to an existing player. We are probably reaching a point where we will need to wait for patents to expire before new players can enter the lower cost SLS printer manufacturing market.

  • @MiddletonMade3D
    @MiddletonMade3D15 күн бұрын

    I'm inclined to agree. I think they made the right move, I know I would have been in over my head at least. They did a kick ass job on what they started but the net good for the community is going to be to have a company with a bigger staff and resource to really make it what it needs to be. I also agree about the IP being locked up now. They had some wonderful ideas that changed the game for the industry. It's sad to see it wont be opensource.

  • @liamventer
    @liamventer15 күн бұрын

    @MiddletonMade3D I am not so concerned the IP is not Open Source, I am more concerned that it is now locked up with the dominant player in the lower cost SLS printer market place. This make it harder for a new competitor to enter this market space....which is not good for consumers and ongoing technology competition driving advancements.

    Can't help but be disappointed and not very optimistic. I understand Micronics may not have worked out, but we wanted to see them try. I'd guess a couple years before a new affordable printer is announced and affordable will likely mean just under $10K.

    My guess is we will get a new machine by 2026, itll be 6K, and there will be some very minimal flexibility on materials. They dont want their product to be completely proprietary, but my guess is if you use non-FL material, you will be limited in configuration somehow. Like generic profiles for non-BambuLab filaments on their printers for example - just moreso. Still, at the end of the day, the POINT of the project for all of us was "An affordable desktop SLS printer for everyone." Anything over three thousand dollars is past a consumer printer, in my opinion.

  • @MiddletonMade3D
    @MiddletonMade3D16 күн бұрын

    Those are all valid points. I think these types of machines are definitely prosumer. Bring cost, there's a good amount of post processing that the average fdm printer would be so upset about.

    Part of the Kickstarter apology gift, in additon to the $1k coupon, is that Formlabs has allegedly pledged to give backers a free "open material license" once they finalize the language... Basically Formlabs will allow the use of third-party powders, but ONLY if you pay them a license fee to escape their overpriced powder ecosystem. Gross.

    Having an issue. I printed this to use with an m&p 2.0 it all fits well but the slide rack mechanism isn’t quite tall enough. Also I noticed it has a decent amount of flex to it. Should I extend that mechanism down to touch the top of the slide to make it more solid? Is that how it is meant to fit?

It's been on my mind and haven't been able to find any info online. Also kicking the idea of a cast resin part made from a 3d printed mold. It's totally possible. I'm not versed enough in it myself to invest and give it a go, but i know things like grips even, with a good multi part mold, could be made with forged carbon fiber. There's a lot of room to grow in the mixed media parts. I'd be very curious to see your results if you experiment with this.
