I’m a professional trailer editor who share tips and tricks for how to edit great trailers!
I made this channel to teach people how to make great trailers using, tutorials, essays reviews, and behind-the-scenes looks at the art of making trailers.
Trailers are a niche industry, but I know there are a lot of people interested in watching and making them; I want to bring together everyone who shares my love for this fun and exciting art form.
Some of my credits include: Among Us, Half-Life: Alyx, Psychonauts 2, Subnautica, Spelunky 2, Dead Cells, Ooblets, Katana ZERO and more!
I got my start in the movie trailer industry as an assistant editor at a house which produced for: The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean and many more.

As a man born post 2000, i'd call this the good old times
I would have loved to see specific examples of smaller indie devs spending a lot on a launch animation and it backfiring. Good advice though!
@@blackhoggaming If I were to do that I’d want to do more research and interviews so it’s not just my speculation. Also, it wouldn’t feel right to say “LOOK AT THIS FAILURE” without more info and/or permission.
This trailer is SO enderestimated! It's REALLY original compared to the existing trailers! The soundtrack choices, the editing, the larger focus on gameplay! Chef's kiss!!!!
@@Peetizzle thank you!!!
Nobody gets in your ass like a bicycle with no seat like Captain Sisko. When he told Quark he would nail him to the wall you damn straight he already has that spot on the wall picked out.
Remember the first announcement trailer of cyberpunk 2077, it was a CGI trailer with a police officer shooting at a cyberpsycho woman? SO is it wise to something like that for an indie game to create some hype when game's demo isn't even out yet? I know you generally advice with a NO but in this case, it's only to create some hype, or that wouldn't work either?
I don't advise it, because remember that Cyberpunk wasn't coming out of nowhere, it came out of the second sequel to a game which ended up being one of the most successful AAA games ever made. A cool trailer does not automatically build hype. Have you heard of Exoborne Master The Apocalypse? It premiered with a CG trailer at last year's Game Awards and I had to dig into their channel to find what the name was. The only way you can POSSIBLY create hype without gameplay is if the premise is SUPER UNIQUE and even then it's not a guarantee.
@@DerekLieu no I never heard of ecoborne. tbh, I haven't even watched the award show so I assume 90% of the audience do not watch that sort of stuff either. The core concept of my game is that player creates their own weapon to defeat enemies. So my idea was to make a CGI trailer that at least showcase that. Secondly, I decided to run this trailer via ads on various forums and social media, except google, to make it more targeted. I would put steam page as well fro wishlist so I can start collecting audience. What do you think? it's still a No right? how do I tackle this then? should I wait till my game is finished enough where I can actually make a gameplay trailer?
@@sanketvaria9734 I wouldn’t do it; what you described doesn’t sound unique enough. Also, in ads people are used to seeing CG trailers for mobile games which look nothing like the actual game so they’ll probably lump your game in with those. I’d wait until you can show gameplay. Think of it this way, would YOU wishlist a game based on a CG trailer or a Steam page with no gameplay at all?
What movie is the most difficult to produce a trailer for?
One which has no distinguishing plot or characters.
I love Sisko!
Someone give Captain Sisko an Academy Award or a damn OSCAR for such acting! Kirk BARELY comes CLOSE to such a POWERFUL voice as Sisko here!
Dead Island ripped its money shot from an old french short film. Down to the piano.
What's the name of the film?
@@DerekLieu I've tried to find it multiple times, i don't remember the name, but its a shortfilm, taking place at night, (french?) They're in city streets, male/female couple, has a similar piano / violin melody, same panning shot through the window. Pretty sure if its still somehwere on KZread, my comment from like a decade ago would probably still be on it. I think I was specifically trying to find the song from the trailer, and went down a rabbit hole, and came across that shortfilm somehow.
@@DerekLieu Through the power of chat GPT, I was able to find it all these years later: NUIT BLANCHE directed by Arev Manoukian (2009)
@@mangaas Awesome!!
The animated trailer for wizard with a gun made me disappointed when i found out it was a top down turn based strategy
It’s not turn based strategy at all. It’s a 1-4 player online coop sandbox roguelike.
Good video, I have Zero interest in making video games but I still loved the vid 🔥
Then i see trail i want to know what to expect from game, animated trailers are dont give any info about game itself
Amogus also works cos it has the same art style, same goes for Cuphead
0:43 - 1:24 Frrrr tho cos like sometimes i see these trailers and actually feel disappointed when I realise they're games
For anyone here who knows wizard with a gun, i bet you thought the trailer would be the gameplay
I love animated game trailers, but I think it's a bit annoying to not get a good sight of what the games actually like or what it's even called until half way in or not at all. You can also stylize the trailer a bit more, to save on costs and match the games energy to hype it up without losing momentum when the viewer sees that it's different if you're good at making do with what you have.
Such a confusing game
Good video, direct to the point and nothing else. Really pleased to see videos like this. Keep the great work
I dont know who you are but simply crediting the animators mid video has given me so much respect for you I think I might just subscribe and find out what you do later
@@bored_weeb1958 Thank you! I always want to know who is behind these things whose creators we don’t usually think of (or can’t even find if we want to)
“Are they even effective?” Hell yeah they are they added the S#x update to CoTL!
This is lovely. You missed, “Not as singed as they’re going to get! ENGAGE!!!”
para? medic?
dead cell is not very fun imo
I would add another note: ideally, the animated trailer should have a similar artstyle to the game itself, to make the transition from animation to gameplay less jarring. For example, Cult of the Lamb's animated trailers match the style of the game. So does Among Us.
Me and my son like this song.
I'm curious Wear to ask for feedback Wean I'm make trailer for My own game.
can we load a video of richard miller's characters being a negative nancy?😁
Commander Sisko, the man/woman on top walks a lonely street, the chain of command is often a noose. Admiral Necheyev can transfer people as she pleases you can look that up in all the space regulations...Go have a drink Ben.
I remember meeting with the creator of the FireWatch at one of the dev confs many years ago😊 The trailer shown was SUCH an important way to differentiate yourself, the first contact, and the reminder for everyone who already played. AND, the piece of art - all at the same time! Absolutely essential! So great to find your YT channel 🙌🏻
I remember my brother did something similar for old fps that did have corss on middle but i don't remember what it was 😅
w for letting us know who made the animations. I never Knew! lets me find them easier.
@@ri.n0me217 you’re welcome!
This was a very helpful video! I have two recent Fanmade trailers that I'd like to send and get your opinion on. Where can I send them?
I prefer using the audio mixer. Dedicating 1 track to the reverb sound effect, pasting the clip you want to reverb on that track.
If you wanna make an animated trailer, that's fine.....but at least have the trailer match the game. Cult of the Lamb, the trailer matches the games style. It sucks so much when I see such a promising trailer only to find out the game is pixel art or a completely different style....
It works to getting people one the game but I don't think it works in making them stay. I am immediately interested in anything well-animated, however once I finally get the game, I realize how much the animation really carried it and the game itself is not to my liking at all.
I remember about a month ago there was this trailer for a devolved game where you played as a oranges hair girl in a Japanese’s mafia setting, and it looked awesome!... and then it cut to gameplay, wheee the girl didn’t even have a face because of how few pixels were on screen, what the hell devolver
@@Plain_Delta I’m actually super hype for that game because I was already following it before that trailer 😙
@@DerekLieu yeah...
0:47 "maybe it's the trailer for the new animated show!" 🤠
Metal Gear?!
Hey, pretty sweet! All the shots were incredible, nostlagic and alluring, and the ones of new content were really intriguing, they had me wondering what would the remake change, very nice stuff 👍
@@Mike14264 thanks!
To be fair, Cult of the Lamb and Among Us aren't exactly good examples of this. Cult of the Lamb had a pre-release trailer that was animated, primarily because of the funding from Devolver Digital, and the team behind Among Us, Innersloth, were ALSO the ones responsible for making the Henry Stickmin series of flash games, which they themselves have animated all on their own for YEARS at that point. It's not really expensive for them to do it in house since they've done countless animations for years now.
Bro cares more about the money than the art

I still play Snowrunner my friend. Season 13 just wrapped up. Onto the next. Ever forward Runner!!
Nice nice!
this video is pretty bad since you dont really show any examples of a game that failed with a 2D animated trailer but instead just shown a bunch of successful games with animated trailers which sends the opposite message also despite being only 3 minutes it still feels like your stretching for time
I agree the video isn’t at all as thorough as the topic could be. I’d like to make that version but I’d have to do a lot more research since this is just a short, gut reaction feeling meant to make people think twice rather than assume animated trailers are just the-thing-to-do now. And of course, because I put so little thought into the video it gets over 100k views 😅
Thanks for highlighting and analyzing another amazing trailer!
Thanks for watching!
do you have eny segment for wear to ask for feedback for the trailers ? When it comes to make the trailer for my game it will be good idea to sherry with someone that it's knows more stuff abut trailer in the order to improve the trailer. for me make trailer i will not easy tasks all thos tips and are very useful but believes i will be good idea to show ther trailer to someone before i share public trailer in the order to have more chances to be good trailer.
