Why You Shouldn't Show Logos in Game Trailers | Video Game Trailer Academy

Фильм және анимация

Most game trailers should NOT start with logos, because their name and brand recognition isn't strong enough.

The tl;dr:
Most game studios and even many publishers don't have strong grand recognition, so their logos don't excite audiences.
I put logos on screen for only a few seconds AFTER the trailer starts with gameplay footage. Studios and publishers with name recognition like Naughty Dog, Supergiant Games, Devolver Digital and Annapurna Interactive can rightly do it because they have years of successful releases and a good fan base.
The choice is ultimately up to you, but before you put a logo in the beginning of your trailer (especially if it's for more than a couple seconds) consider whether or not anyone will TRULY get excited when they see it. If not, then I'd skip it and make the trailer viewing experience more friendly to the audience.

ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Derek Lieu and I'm a game trailer editor! I got my start in the movie trailer industry as an assistant editor at a house which produced trailers for: The Matrix Trilogy, Spider-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean and many more.
Over many years I worked as an editor and started making fan trailers for games, until eventually I got jobs at game trailer houses in Los Angeles where I worked on games like Mortal Kombat X, Shadow of Mordor and lots of LEGO games. Independently I've helped make trailers for games like: Half-Life: Alyx, Firewatch, Dead Cells, Subnautica, Spelunky 2, Ooblets and BattleBlock Theater.
I'm using this channel to teach people about the art of making trailers via video essays, tutorials, reviews, and behind-the-scenes looks at my own work. I think about trailers a lot both for work and fun, so I have A LOT to say about them.

    I think Armored Core 6 Fires of Rubicon had one of the best studio logo reveals *ever*. I saw it live, and I wasn't sure what I was watching at first, even after the Bandai Namco logo that the trailer opened with. I had assumed it was just some new IP on a ruined planet with robots, but once FROM SOFTWARE popped up on screen my mind was absolutely blown as it occurred to me that I was watching a trailer for Armored Core. Sure there had been leaks and rumors about the game, but nothing concrete came out regarding it until that trailer was shown. Such an amazing reveal.

    I'm actually curious to hear your thoughts on No More Heroes 3's Game Awards 2019 trailer. The trailer doesn't show anything recognizable until after the fake "Goddamn Superhero" title card, where you can see logos like Hazre and the DeathDrive logo from Travis Strikes Again (the previous NMH game) at the bottom, then Travis breaks it then the logo for NMH3 shows up. However, before all that you get a backstory of Damon Riccitiello and the alien Fu which connects the dots between TSA and NMH3, because Damon appears during the "Travis Strikes Back" visual novel parts of the game. I feel that instead of showing something recognizable, Grasshopper created intrigue for the story for not only casual fans to see the sort of direction the game might be going at with satirizing modern Superhero culture, but also the core audience to start connecting the dots to TSA and the other games in Suda51's "kill the past" series. (The Silver Case, Killer 7, NMH, etc) Even most hardcore fans like myself didn't pick up on the hints dropped, like Damon, or the ship from the first NMH3 trailer. I started realizing what it was until I saw the Hazre logos at the bottom of the screen, but by then it was too late cause BOOM! Travis Touchdown. It caused a lot of people to go watch the extended version of the trailer, which currently has 1.6 million views, 2x the amount the reveal trailer has.

    I've watched the first minute, and I understand your point, but personally I think having the logo at the beginning is not just for familiarity. It is also for introducing someone to your company or something. The logo is the main thing, so the logo at the beginning is literally just a "Welcome to our company, this is us, now to the trailer". Also I see you're using the argument as the logo taking 6 seconds, but I've never seen a logo take that long. If you do it correctly, it's best to have a logo at the beginning. You can have a logo that lasts half of a second if you want and that's fine.

    I know what you’re saying, but outside of a live event with a captive audience, people don’t have time for indulgent logo sequences (which yes, are very common at all levels of game budgets) This recent Reddit thread is a sampling of people who’ve been conditioned to skip the beginning of game trailers over many years of this. www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/12raw4o/anybody_else_skips_the_videos_and_jumps_straight/?

    I have to disagree. Maybe thats how it works for the average consumer, but without the introduction of the Logo it feels rushed. Its like "EAT THIS! THIS IS ALL IT GOT" and in the end I am disappointend, because all they got is a stupid cinematic without any gameplay info or washed down generism. It feels cheap

  • @DerekLieu

    @DerekLieu

    So you prefer the slow introduction of logos before the cinematic starts? What if it's a gameplay trailer where you want to see gameplay, but the logos you don't recognize take up 6 seconds of time?

    @@DerekLieu @Derek Lieu It is the mental preparation towards the actual footage (also thanks for the consideration of this comment! I like sharing those things). I would also consider to have the Logos with music, which are not bound to the logo, but the soundeffects of each logo still staying the same. "What if it's a gameplay trailer where you want to see gameplay, but the logos you don't recognize take up 6 seconds of time?" This mindset imo is comparable to music: Over the decades main parts of music have to start within 5-10s, or it will be skipped. So longer introductions (which gives afterwards a far better outcome of the whole experience of the medium) are completly neglected to acknowledge and push the behaviour of impatiency. A similar mentality happens with the "loudness war", if you heard about this one. If the Logos take lets say 10 seconds without anything to entertain (no music and boring logodesign), I totally agree with your opinion here. But I believe that is not bound to putting logos at front in general, but the way how the logo is conveyed. Another good example of Logoplacement at front (i dont know if this is in the trailer or just in the game itself) is the "chucklefish" logo in stardew valley. The picture and the SFX immediatly sticked in my head, and I actually remembered that dev team from the getgo (I only know this game from them btw). For me its not about ego as a consumer, but as a symbol of the product. And that symbol can be completly meaningless at first, but I remember that symbol and the meaning can come afterwards, if that makes sense :)

    @@DerekLieu Also a good example of what I mean with rushed would be "Risk of Rain" Trailer on steam. Its very unappealing for me. (because I am now checking what games chucklefish made/published, and that was one of them. Sadly non of their logos pop up) Edit: Starbound for example makes the introduction perfect! Now I even thought about another logo, where you see the logo being shot by an arrow. Then I realised its divinity original sin 2. Opened the page, checked the trailer, and here we go! Larian Studios, exactly how I remembered it :D Damn that trailer is impressive, especially how the music is composed with the trailer in mind.

  • @DerekLieu

    @DerekLieu

    @@DaimonTrilogy Yeah, those are good examples of why you might want to have a logo. I mostly just want people to think hard about whether or not a logo at the front is best for their particular studio and/or game, because I don't think it's a given that everyone should put it (or shouldn't). I think a lot of indie game trailers especially do it because they think they *should* do it not because it was a considered decision. If the logo (or anything in the trailer) amounts to dead air which tells little to nothing about the studio or the game, then I consider it wasted time and inconsiderate to the people who are watching the trailer to learn something about a new thing. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    @@DerekLieu Exactly! Now we are on the same page and also now fully understand your concern (and also agree!). I just wished it was conveyed like this in the video, because it was more presented as a "NO-GO" instead of "making the consideration why you put the logo in the first place", but that wouldnt make for a flashy title, now wouldnt it xD In any case, due to the fact that you are more in this business than I am, I have a question (and thats why I found your vid in the first place): How is the procedure of mentioning utilities you used(for example articy) to finish your project in your game by placing their logos? Is there a common practice, or does each individual owner need to be contacted to get authorisation? I was thinking about putting "powered by Articy" including their logo and such. I was googling quickly, but could not get enough information about this topic and consulting a lawyer for that is a bit overkill.
