Just found your channel and subscribed. Fantastic quality and a great day out. Brought back memories of my early forays into mtb rides around Loch Muick coming from the Glen Doll side. 1988 on my first ever mtb, a specialised hard rock which was basically a chunky bike, no suspension, fat tyres and a wider group set. Loved that bike.
Thank you for subscribing! I appreciate the support. I actually plan to ride around there from Glen Doll too, bit not on such a vintage bike I think 😀
Absolutely gutted. Was staying one night In Moffat last week😅 after a longer break in Galloway and that would have been a perfect little ride before my 5 hour journey south. How did I miss this video.. Thanks Anyway.. I did the Raiders/Port Patrick RW route because of your blog. Again Thanks
While the drone footage makes for some great videos, an issue is that it makes the views appear far better than what you will see from the bike therefore an unrealistic idea of what the ride is like.
It's more than just the ride though, I try to capture the area through the drone shots. I try to portray what you will see on the bike and give some extra views that not everyone can see through the drone.
@@RustyRidesGravel My comment wasn't intended as criticism nothing wrong with a good video. One of my favourite rides, not just because it's on my doorstep, is Mabie forest, shambelie woods and bisons link. I would contend that Bilsons link is the best stretch of gravel in the UK. You should do sometimes, I could even show you the best route.
Great video and edit. The ride looks like one I'm going to have to do.
Great video. The difference in your moving time and actual time just shows how much time it takes to position the camera for bike pasts and getting the drone up.
Yes it does tend to eat in to the time a bit!
Rusty your adventure vlogs are Fantastic..... Always exciting to view, Thanks 👍
Thank you!
Great video that brings back some great memories. I've ridden a MTB around Loch Muick and always wanted to go up and over to Balmoral but never quite did it before we left Aberdeen for Ayrshire. But I've walked extensively in that area and know all the mountains well. I think I've climbed Lochnagar more than any other mountain. That track down to Loch Muick from Lochnagar is bad enough to walk down! Definitely one for an MTB. Personally, every time I look at one of your videos or one like it I think, 'hardtail required!'. Did you try a dram at Royal Lochnagar? It is the only distillery I have been to where I didn't buy a bottle after having a taste!
As I am getting on a bit now with this gravel riding lark, I am more often than not thinking a hardtail us the bike of choice more often than not!
@@RustyRidesGravel That said, I bought a new HT for Christmas and promptly thought, 'I need a proper gravel bike!' as it is a bit slow in places. Then of course I need a full-sus e-Bike for the properly gnarly stuff... One can never have too many bikes!
Coo-lar-doch
There it is! Thank you.
I love this bothy very much, it is so beautifully situated and built. Certainly one of my favourite bothies in escotia. ATB
That first track is definitely rideable and means less time/distance on the road.
Ah! I wasn't in the mood to risk it, good to know, thanks!
Another cracker Rusty. From low temperatures there now it appears you got all the heat of this summer in one day! Thanks again for sharing.
Hey whats the book you mentioned at the end called.?
Gravel Rides Scotland by Ed Shoote 👍
@RustyRidesGravel thank you I'll go look it up
Fantastic, thanks again for sharing 👍
thanks for the video, it bought back memories of riding the same tracks a couple of years ago fantastic area
Looked a great ride, thanks for sharing. Oh and the track on the north side of Lock Muick is fine for most bikes but the trail on the south side is a pig even on a mtb. Single track that has lots of rocks so I had to push a lot of it a couple of years back. Defo not worth it.
Good to know, thanks!
Thank for the stunning video.
Superb route Richard 👍 might have to give that one a go some time soon. 😁
Another great vlog rusty, cheers
Great video and fantastic ride. Enjoyed your honest review at the end summing it all up. What a day! 😊
I am often pretty exhausted at the end so the review sometimes feels a bit flat. I need to find a way to get the intro energy into the end of the video!
Another great video - I've walked parts of that route when doing the corbetts but now starting to wonder if I should have just invested in a new MTB instead of the gravel bike, going by your recent routes 😀 Hoping 45mm knobbly tubeless tyres at a lower pressure, and a suspension stem will make such routes a bit more gravel bike friendly.
I sometimes wonder if the "challenge" of taking the gravel bike is worth it and I should just accept that a hardtail is really what I need...
Great video as usual! Some of that rubble definitely is MTB territory! That's the thing about the wilderness, beautiful sublime gravel but only connected by a barsteward of a 2 mile rubble track or HAB!
Cracking route pal must give this a bash mtb for me though 👍
Having watched you slog your way up that hill at Lochnagar, have you ever considered an e-bike to make the ride more enjoyable? There's the extra weight to carry around when you're not using the motor I suppose, and you're still young and fit enough to not need it, but just a thought. Excellent video as always and looks like a route I'd certainly consider doing myself. Living on the coast of the North East of Scotland I'd consider this one "local" as well 🙂
Actually I had to cut about a 6 minute rant I had after a guy on an ebike overtook me with no effort at all on that climb! Didn't even say hi! I decided it was the lack of sugar talking so didn't keep it in. I have often thought about getting one, but at them moment it's not an option.
@@RustyRidesGravel He maybe detected your foul humour on approach and decided it would best not to say anything 😆
Always enjoy your amazing cinematography that you capture with your positive bubbly personality to match, no matter what the weather is doing.... Keep bringing us these awesome adventures! Rusty never thought of throwing in wildcamps to the mix ?
I definitely want to do wild camps but I struggle for time a lot. I'm glad you enjoy the videos, thank you.
Being a local I was thinking of going up that way the other day but you will bake in the sun in summer.
That bog slog 😮😮😮 honkin! Fair play for keeping that in your video though mate... A good route planning reminder to us all! Gneiss joke 😂
Great video Rusty, lovely drone footage too. Cheers 🚲👍
Hi I just came across your video and watched it last week- then my husband and I did it yesterday- what a fab route loved Glen Almond- thanks so much for this - will definitely check out your other videos too 😊
That's great to hear! I am glad you enjoyed the route 😊
Fantastic video yet again Rusty, them views Frank shows are superb 👌👏
Yeah he does a good job!
Great route, have done it on my mtb. Wouldn’t want to do the path down to Loch Lomond on a gravel bike!!😮😅
Superb footage 👍
I always think of it as an autumn route turn the colours are quite spectacular. The full route gets a bit rougher after the bothy, better with fat tyres.
Great video Rusty, shame the weather and scenery were so terrible for you! I’m wondering, have you done a video where you go through the kit you take with you on a ride? Tools, spares, bananas, chainsaw, that kind of thing.
Haha a chainsaw isn't a bad shout! I have not done a video on the stuff I take with me - I might do one!
I would love a video of that. I don’t think there’s much that is 100% necessary, and always find it interesting to hear the what and why people carry, and also what they don’t carry.
Also, it’s very nice to have you back making videos.
Nice loop! Keen to do the full affric-kintail way sometime, ive done this route, and the route around being fhada and itd be good to link them up!
Fab video of one of my favourite areas of the highlands, and on my bucket list for a gravel ride. I rode my old hardtail from the River Affric car park (at the end of the public road) along the south side of Loch Affric and along the Kintail-Affric way to Altbeithe bothy a few years back to do some munros that way, not so much fun in at 4am the dark 😀
Beautiful footage, great video 👍🏼
Thank you very much!
Rusty, absolutely loving your stuff, thank you
Go and setup “buy a coffee” so I can buy you one
Haha! Thank you for wanting to support the channel, I might look in to getting buymeacoffee reactivated soon 👍
That was a bit epic!
It was. Fun though now that I think back on it!
You don't need a gravel bike, though you may want one. You can do it on a road bike with regular 26 mm tyres.
That sounds....tricky. How did you avoid punctures?
Loving your stuff rusty, thanks for sharing
That first track was grim!
Yes it was!
if i wanted to do 1 nights wild camp on route where would you park the car for the night.
I am not certain but I think the car park I used in Gatehouse of Fleet is OK for overnight parking. Also you might be able to park at the Big Water Of Fleet Viaduct but I am not 100% sure of that.
I found a video of the steep singletrack between Glen Quaich and Glen Almond, looks every bit as good as I remembered! kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZZautcSYZazFmZc.htmlsi=oiCF2UL2x04fZQXB
Hi Rusty, followed your channel for a good while now. Glad to see you are back 💥. Im doing an overnighter shortly. Bridge of Orchy, Glen Lyon, over to rannoch and then up to Corrour. About 135k. Was checking out Glen Lyon stuff and happened upon this again. Trip is in about 10 days time and your video has me buzzing for it. Loving the channel, delighted you’re back………take it at your own pace. We love your content 👌👍🏻💥😁. Thanks
That sounds like an amazing trip!
We pedalled down Strath Ossian to Corrour and the SYHA back in April this year (2024]. Sadly we were into a headwind down the strath and even had to pedal downhill! Great area to ride in though, and the Youth Hostel is a must ‘off- grid‘ location to visit. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing video. I've just been there.
Brilliant thanks for sharing richard hard going in bits but amazing scenery good to see you back thanks ...👍🏻🚴♂️🏴☀️...cw
A great route, I cycled from Spean Bridge to Corrour via Loch Ossian, after a pit stop at the station I embarked on the tough route back to Spean Bridge via Loch Treig and the Lairig Leacach Bothy, it was particularly difficult terrain wise and the searing heat and swarms of cleggs never helped either. Other than that, a decent day was had. Well done on completing a thoroughly tough route.
Thanks
Thank you for the support!
Yes, first half a bit too testing for me. As always an excellent and very informative vlog of your experience. Thanks for sharing.
