Florida Gulf Coast Marine Services

Hello. My name is Captain Ken and I work for TowBoat US. Most of the videos on this channel show some of the work I did as a contract captain for them when I worked down in Venice/Englewood FL and now up in Sarasota FL. I release new videos every Sunday at 10am.

    Hi Ken, I just started watching your channel and have subscribed. With a situation like this, couldn't you use a bridal and attach it to a cleat on each side of the towed boat? I would think it would help the boat track better. I don't know why but I find your videos very relaxing. Well, most of them anyway.

    I find it amazing that here on the Great Lakes recreational boaters will go out of there way to help others at the ramp. Especially the elderly or the novices that just aren't ready yet or don't have the experience or correct equipment. Florida is the complete opposite, Its a argument or fight to get someone to lend a hand down there.

    I love your videos! Have you ever thought about using a drone with fishing line connected to the drone and then the fishing line would be connected to the tow line. Fly the drone with the fishing line out to the people on the boat. The people could then reel in the fishing line to get to the tow line and then tie off on a cleat. No more worries about trying to walk to the boat in the water any more... You could use something like a DJI Mini 4 which is fairly cheap or go for something a little more substantial like a DJI Mavic 3.

  • @CaptKenO
    @CaptKenOКүн бұрын

    I have, but it doesn't provide any benefit to me, and they'd still have to get in the water to tie the line to the tow eye

    If you got a three strand why not just splice a permanent eye? Save you the hassle of tying and untying a bowline.

  • @CaptKenO
    @CaptKenO4 күн бұрын

    Because most of the line we have is braided...but either way, a permanent eye is useless in 90% of the tows we do since it doesn't fit through a trailer eye and we'd have to tie a bowline anyway if we're using a bridle

    No. The only time I do is when towing a big boat through a narrow bridge and that's just to cover my ass in case of an incident. I'd say at least 75% (probably higher) of the boats in the area don't monitor CH16...so there's not much point and we're not required to anyway

    I am not sure if your are know what kedging is but this boat could have been pulled off. You hook a line to a halyard on the mast and pull from the top of the mast. by leaning the boat over you increase flotation and raise the keel that boat will semi float in 2 feet of water on her side. I pulled a 5 ft draft oday 32 through a half mile of 2.5 foot water with a pair or 150 hondas on a 28 ft cat not even a tow boat. the rough seas would have bounced her right out.

  • @CaptKenO
    @CaptKenO7 күн бұрын

    Maybe you should look up the definition of kedging. It has nothing to do with pulling from a mast. As to the method of ungrounding a boat by pulling from a halyard...yes it's a viable method, but it's not worth the risk for us so we don't do it.
