How Many Times Will I Have to Save This Guy? | Grounding 45ft Freedom
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We have a contender for the most ungroundings I’ve done with one customer. This guy is now tied at 3 apiece with a boat I dealt with in Venice (although that guy was 3x in a week), and with the 49ft Jeanneau. Based on the directions he gave me to get back into his marina, I’m starting to think he’s navigating around Sarasota Bay by dead reckoning…which is not very precise and would explain why he keeps running aground. What do you think? Leave your comments down below!

Welcome back to the channel, sailors! Today, we're diving into some epic grounding tales that'll make you rethink your navigation strategies. This time, we've got a contender for the most ungroundings ever with a single customer. Can you believe it?
This adventurous soul is now neck and neck with a boat I once dealt with in the winding canals of Venice. And get this, the Venetian boat managed to ground itself three times in just one week! But our current protagonist isn't far behind, matching each mishap with resilience and determination.
But here's the kicker - based on the directions he's been giving me to navigate back into his marina, I'm starting to suspect he's relying on dead reckoning to traverse Sarasota Bay. Now, for those of you unfamiliar with dead reckoning, let's just say it's not the most precise method, especially for navigating tricky waters like these.
Could this be the reason behind his repeated groundings? Is he simply charting his course based on a wing and a prayer? Share your thoughts in the comments below! And if you've got your own grounding stories to tell, don't hesitate to share - after all, we're all in this seafaring adventure together.
Stay tuned for more tales from the high seas, and until next time, fair winds and following seas, sailors! ⚓🌊

I don't know if it's a good idea for this guy to be on the road with anything bigger than a golf cart. I can totally see this guy wedging an RV under a low bridge or taking out a covered awning at an ATM or something. He's clearly got the same IQ as a coffee table.

Ain't got time for the helm, gotta call my deckhand on the walkie tallkie phone ...
So, I guess his motor was not working. Most of the time you can sail off a ground with some heel, but it looks like little to no wind that day. 5 foot draft is pretty short for a 45' sailboat. Interesting to see a 45' sailboat with a hank on jib. You could heel that boat pretty far and the boat would just pop right back up. The entire tow back to the marina, they could have been tidying up the sails. Did he want you to tow them in to save gas? That cap wasn't kind at all. If you have seen him thrice, how many times has he gotten grounded and made it out with his sails on his own? His keel must be tired and worn by now.
@CaptKenO
2 ай бұрын
It's awing keel, so you can't heel it over too much when it's aground like that. That's also why it's such a small draft for a big boat

I'm wondering about the synthetic ropes they are using for auto recovery and winches, and whether or not they make any sense on boat recovery?
@CaptKenO
2 ай бұрын
The lines we use are synthetic material too, just heavier duty and designed to float
How does this gentleman manage to keep running his vessel aground? Charts are so accurate these days that you would almost need to be doing it on purpose.

How are you liking the two-stroke torque vs the four-stroke?
@CaptKenO
2 ай бұрын
I can't say the torque is any better, but the whaler with the 2 strokes is just propped perfectly for that engine/boat combo...but I hate running the 2 strokes, so even if they are/were better, I'd take the 4 strokes
Hey Ken, do you just get what ever boat each day, I've seen three different setups, but two 200 smoke em's has to be the best sounding :)
@CaptKenO
2 ай бұрын
Great question. So we have 1 dedicated boat per location, and 2 reserve boats in storage. The prokat and the worldcat are the 2 primary boats I run and they get swapped out about every hundred hour for maintenance. The whaler is the backup boat for the other location, but it comes down here when both of my boats are out for service. It doesn't happen often (thankfully), but sometimes one of my boats is out for major service and the other needs it's regular servicing

I really miss operating the big boat but the small one is easier for maint etc and sandbar cruising. She did take us from Boston, around Fla and the Bahamas so we did build some fantastic memories.
4’11 draft on a boat that size?
@CaptKenO

That's the beauty of technology...a wing keel let's you have a shallow draft for a big boat!
Gotta love the repeat customers! The ones that get every cent out of their membership-if they are members. Typical of the type- “the wind is free everything else should be” TIP YOUR CAPTAIN! And don’t tell them how to do their job, “answer your phone” how about steer your boat and get off your phone! Just unloading a lil here….

Welcome to my life/job 🙄
Hello, I like your videos I'm new to sailing but want to try it out. So my question is don't they know the depth with depth finder? I absolutely don't want to be like this guy so what's the solution? Thanks so much, like your professionalism 🫡
@CaptKenO
2 ай бұрын
Thanks Josh! Depth finders generally only read the depth directly under you and not what's in front...so you have to know where you're going and keep an eye on the depth and know when it's getting shallow, and then either be very careful, or back out
So 3 x in a yr, he should be done on the membership tows untll 2025, should put her on the hard till then

As many times as needed! As long as he isn't hurting anyone, what's the harm?
Some people should not own boats
So third go around, still doesn’t know to steer for the stern, still had all plain sail flying by the time you got there, during the whole tow left his sails in a fouled mess, not to mention whatever the hell is going on with his sail cover… I don’t think this is a fellow who should be sailing which is saying something coming from me… I’m typically of the opinion that it’s better to educate than to shame but there’s got to be a limit some where
