Here's my take (context; I'm a Sony user): The hate on Lumix S9 is just so unnecessary. I miss the day reviewers reviewing a product in the eyes of what the product's target audience are intended to, instead of in the eyes of professional users. So far the reviews that I've been seeing online (esp. KZread) have been unfair mostly due to the reason above. Lumix S9 is not a perfect camera, that's super obvious already. No EVF, no grip, no mechanical shutter, and most of the "basic" stuffs required by a professional. This is true. But this is a camera targeted at modern content creators that are geared more to making cinematic-like (not cinematic, there's a difference) videos & aesthetic-looking stills as easy as possible, while still having an access to most (not all) of the pro features (of Lumix S5II) should they need to step-up their game & hone their content creation craft. All while looking good at doing it. These are the audience that preferred to compose, shoot, edit, and share on a screen be it a smartphone or a laptop/PC, and this audience grew so much for the last few years. It is absolutely perfect for those kinds of audience, but not for us professionals. And yet, many reviewers are ignoring the obvious, and treated the camera as the biggest insult to pro users the world has ever seen lol I really don't get it.

Do you have a full frame RF mount camera to see how much vignetting the 18mm does on a FF sensor. Because the 7artisan 25mm T1.05 do kinda cover FF. As in it doesn’t have a strict, sharp, vignette shadow for the image circle. It actually has a gentle vignette shadow across the full frame with a bit of edge distortion which I think kinda looks cool. Basically, I want to film by moonlight with an A7siii as wide as I can go.

@WES-pt2ho11 күн бұрын
@@EdProsser Oh, sorry. I'm not an English speaker and misunderstood your simple question. I think this is a camera aimed at the ZV-E1, but the lenses used with it make it difficult to be compact. I think it's hard for a photographer to get a camera that can't even sync with flash. Sony cameras have everything, some things are just too minimalistic (EVF, grip, etc). The S9 has a certain appeal, but when it comes down to it, I don't think it's a camera that you can choose from any position. I think it's going to have a very limited audience. So the prediction that this camera will sell well is interesting to me.

I’m noticing that a lot of footage I see from the pocket 3 on KZread is exposed in a “dark” more moody tone. Is this all a coincidence or is this type of exposure needed to compensate for the highlights maybe clipping? Just trying to get an idea of how this can be used outdoors for travel vlogging. Want to make sure this isn’t exactly a necessity rather than just a creative choice that seems to just be common.
@EdProsser13 күн бұрын
Two points... generally "cinematic" images tend to be darker and sometimes moodier than images presented from commercials, sports or TV which can be super bright, sharp and saturated. So it's a stylistic thing for sure. Giving this tiny camera such a stylised grade kinda distances it from the usual action camera look. You're also completely right on the underexposing point, the sensor has very limited dynamic range and a pretty harsh highlight roll off which means it's very easy to clip highlights in an average outdoors scene with sky and white clouds in it. This doesn't look great and really points towards the use of a smaller (cheaper) sensor - so to protect from this you have to expose for the highlights and that often pulls the rest of the image down, making for a darker exposure.

This camera is definitely an oddball in that it's simultaneously amazing yet significantly limited lol. It does look fun though. I'd never purchase it as it doesn't have an e-mount but in 20 years kids will be searching for those super niche retro s9 cameras for sure lol. Maybe they'll even collect all the colors. I think that the camera community needs to take a step back though and view this as a significant technological moment for lumix. The S9 isn't important because it's the perfect camera that solved everybody's problems. It's important because it's ushering in a technological shift and an evolutionary moment for lumix. Lumix is looking imperfect yet newly competitive and photographers will benefit from that down the line.

Beautiful work, Ed. This is some of the nicest looking Pocket 3 footage I've seen. It's perhaps crushed just a tad more than I'd like - I'd prefer to see the mids/shadows raised just a little more, but that's just a matter of taste. Again, lovely stuff.
@EdProsser13 күн бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Nick! I do tend to pull my images downwards and I think the Osmo definitely benefits from a "bolder" look, to hide its small dynamic range - but realise it's not for everyone. The Osmo also often needs to be underexposed a lot to protect the highlights from clipping so often capturing images on the darker side. Still perfecting this look though so still lots of room for improvement! The powergrade isn't automatically this contrasty but will allow you to dial in to taste. Thanks for your thoughts!

For professional work, the S5ix is better suited. For family photos and videos, the A7C2 is better suited. If I were considering a purchase, I'd rather go with the A6700 if I could afford the price.
Thanks for sharing what do you prefer about the Sony cams?
@@WES-pt2ho not at all, I just don't know much about them, so am interested about what people prefer etc. just a simple question!
@@WES-pt2ho no need to apologise. Thanks, have heard a lot about the ZV-E1 but never seen one in the flesh. Re: flash yeah I think it divides people - myself - I never use one and for a camera like this - I wouldn't expect to pair it with one. I bought the X100V recently - I'll never use if with a flash but it does have the OVF / EVF which is why I went for it. The camera has been reported out of stock and pre-orders have apparently exceeded expectations is what I'm hearing.
@@EdProsser Thank you for your generosity. s9 hasn't been released in my country yet, I'm curious to see how it will be received. As always, thanks for the awesome information.
Hey man I really appreciate all the work and effort you put into this video. I've been on the edge about upgrading and your video is the most in depth video I've come across yet. Thank you so much for this, new sub and I'm going to make the jump next week!
Thank you! Wanted to share everything I've learnt on this cam, as I know REDs tend to have a long second life on the used market so I figured a lot of people would be picking em up used and wanting some up to date info on them!
Hey director Prosser, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, are you interested to have a logo for your channel to have a memorable branding to increase your audience loyalty and views? I would love to have the honor to design a filmmaker inspired monogram logo of your vision! Let me know if you interested to make it happen! :-)

Thanks so much for the offer but not looking for a logo at the moment!

i know that u're dropping your LUT soon, but also it would be great if u upload one video about the osmo pocket settings and tips how to make cinemativ vid in details
Hey man already got it planned, I'll be making a review and a separate video on how to squeeze the most cinematic image out of the Osmo!
@@EdProsser wow, so nice to hear that <3 ill be waiting for that video <3
Please man ! I’m definitely going to buy your luts
I will release them soon after a bit of testing!
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
Thanks for stopping down!
best red komodo review out there!!!!
Thank you it was a lot of work!
@@EdProsser thank you bro! I get my red komodo almost 2 years ago, and you describe exactly every feeling i got with it along the time, specially with the process of learning how to use it, and how to manage the colorgrade with it
To my dad-cam untrained eye, the x100 pics look like paused video, whereas S9 pics look like actual photos. Certainly why it caught my attention.
I'm very happy with my X100v so far, but yes the S9 images are much higher res. Thats not always a good thing... imo images can often come out looking a bit too sharp and clinical SOOC, but the LUT library can help with that!
Gorgeous Ed
Great points! Yeah LUMIX finally has a huge roster of cameras after a bit of a drout.... And so true to think that kids in the future are gonna be paying through the nose for this "retro" camera haha.
Beautiful work, Ed. This is some of the nicest looking Pocket 3 footage I've seen. It's perhaps crushed just a tad more than I'd like - I'd prefer to see the mids/shadows raised just a little more, but that's just a matter of taste. Again, lovely stuff.
@@EdProsser great point on exposing for the Osmo's lower range, I bet that's tricky.
@@nick_salazar it's a nightmare 🤣 and fiddly to change exposure all the time on the fly. But when you manage it you can get some surprisingly nice results for the size of the thing
Still waiting in delightful anticipation!
Drop me an email and I can send you work in progress!
Yes, please!
stay tuned, more info in the coming weeks
Great I was half thinking about one of these and 10seconds in i'm about to click buy, lovely grade.
Haha thanks - I'll make the grade / LUT available soon! Yeah it's a lot of fun, had it on holiday with me this week - so will share some more footage and a breakdown of the grading process.
Love the vibe on this one!!
Thanks man!
Beautiful Color and Footage Congratulations:),Want to try that lut now.
It's in the works, coming soon!
