Great vid mate. Really good overview. I've actually been enjoying these lenses more than I thought I would to be fair. They definitely don't have wild character like Atlas, but maybe that's not such a bad thing as you could probably get away with using them across a wider variety of projects. Funky anamorphicness is lush, but niche. The Remus do look very interesting. Potentially a middle ground between Saturn and Mercury, 'character' wise. Nice job!

Amazing work as always Ed! I was particularly interested to see how these little guys worked with the adapter for the 2x squeeze. The pics @11:20 on twilight in the street… 🙌🏻 incredible! I think it’s an especially good pairing with the Komodo for handheld because of its global shutter. On my S5iix handheld with Venus lenses and the adapter I have to hold my breath and stay still to avoid ‘jello’. No such difficulties with the Red’s global shutter. Really lovely!

Yes that's why I decided to test these on my Komodo, I find the LUMIX S5iix a bit awkward for anamorphic, tend to stick it in APS-C anyway and the form factor makes it a bit awkward. I will probably cut something from the Italy footage as I spent a lot of time walking around and shooting stuff around the streets which I don't usually have time for. I loved the 2x image from these with th adapter!

The S5iix is great for anamorphic, but I find the read out speed of the sensor, especially in open gate to be quite slow. So I prefer to shoot in aps-c mode on the LUMIX cams as this renders really nice motion. Generally I think these are some of the best mirrorlesa cams to shoot anamorphic on

Great video as always! We always skip the mobility part when it comes to lenses but only when you have limited space you understand the need for a small lens. :)) At 0:30 it reminds me of how bad the lights are in Italy. Even with the correct setup it flickered like crazy on my GX85, I had to upload them to YT with the flickering. Even with a global shutter (on red) I see there are still issues with them, at least you don't get the banding. :))

  • @EdProsser

If you are on a 2.8 and iso 400 the monitor is so dark that you cant see what ur doing and the image is also very noisy. So i guess for low light u will need a speed booster on any anamorphic or most cinema lenses.

@@EdProsser lolol, yeah I tried to paint a picture but not sure how that applied to the question in hindsight. so I meant the 35mm nanomorph for 35 sensor compared to 35mm saturn which I believe is FF? I know Komodo is s35, so in theory the Laowa nanomorphic seems like the easy answer, but I'm curious if one felt easier to run and gun / grade than the other?

Can you explain the benefit of having the 2x adapter instead of using the lens without? Stunning colour grading, the footage looks amazing pal. I'm just trying to understand what you actually get by using the 2x adapter. Thanks bud

You get a more stretch / de-squeeze so you're enhancing the anamorphic look / characteristics - given these lenses are quite sharp and clean that could be quite appealing to some.

Great Review, but after Blazar released the Remus Set I do not see any competition for them anymore.

No competition to the Remus? I'm not totally sold on the Blazar Remus lenses, and this is coming from someone who likes character and grunge in a lens. There's been so little sample footage shown from them it doesn't fill me with confidence - I wouldn't drop money on them until more people have reported back on using them. They look close but not close enough to justify buying. Quietly interested to find out how people rate them

Blazar lenses ar so soft compared to sirui. When you strat adding filters it's even softer. Great if you want your 6k camera to look like 720p

  • @EdProsser

I guess it's yet to be determined how sharp the Remus will be - some have suggested that the early sample footage had shimming issues - so might not be reflective of the actual lens... It's disappointing they've not really engaged with the community to send out samples and get more feedback / sample footage out there - I wouldn't feel confident pre-ordering those lenses from what I've seen . I'll be eagerly paying attention to what the early adopters have to report back on when they get these lenses next year.

@ddespair just take any frame and squeeze horizontal by 1.6x. When you should you usually desqueeze on your monitor to preview your frame properly

The DZO Pavos? I've not shot on them, but I think they look a lot more interesting! They're only Super 35 and 2x anamorphic so not super comparable... They'll give you a more classic anamorphic look than these, but they're a lot more expensive and larger.

@@cruisechill1813 yes quite hard to compare as different types of lenses and image quality is very subjective... The Sirui are very clean and sharp.
