Wow, can’t realize you guys just didn’t cut the box off the machine. Easy to do, no damage to the machine if you pay attention and you don’t have to struggle pulling out the machine.

I agree, I own 3 myself and was hooked in the early sixties with an EM. I personally enjoy getting a pin that needs work. I'm retired and what a better way of using my time to relax and rebuild a pinball machine to something fantastic to enjoy and take pride in owning. Frustrating as well but learning more and more everytime I run into my next hurdle ! Yes I do have some knowledge in reading scheme mastics and electronics, but I'm not an electronics expert by no means and need help from time to time. Keep on trucking!

Oh and believe it or not I forgot to mention in my 3000 word dissertation that pinball is best enjoyed with friends. Pinball is a very social activity IMHO. My son and I have such great times playing with our pinball buddies or just here at the house. Our doors are always open to anyone that wants to come over and bang out some games on our collection. Maybe one day someone will actually take us up on it.

Forgive me for the length I hope you read to the end. One perspective on my take of Why Pinball. As someone who entered this hobby just a couple years ago now, the primary reason I got into this was a search to find something that would interest my son and something we could share in. Pinball has exceeded all expectations. Our friend Mike Woods who is the owner/operator of one of the best arcades in the Metroplex, the Electric Starship Arcade provided the in arcade experience that lead us into this hobby. I've told him this multiple times, he's directly responsible for leading us to this journey of discovery. I never thought we would ever own a pinball machine or arcade game and it's not a necessity that you do. Cary one of your video's about pinball still rings clearly. You warned they breed like rabbits. Something I've heard many times now. If you get one, be full warned one turns into two and two becomes four. We have 7 now operational and 3 more projects in the queue. I have spent more on this hobby than anything I know of and I'm a tight ass penny pincher. And it scares me that this hobby is capable of prying my wallet open like this. My kids could be hungry and the flippers on one of our games might be broken and those flippers are gonna get fixed. Okay, I'm joking, but the addiction is real and I've seen it and experienced it. So the question is WHY? Let me give my take. Arcade games are great, but IMHO they pale in comparison to pinball. Pinball is a physical game and no two pinball machines will ever play alike and no two games of pinball will ever be the same at any point during any given game. It is a game of skill, oh yes, skill. And some have it and most don't. Secret, I don't. It can be learned, but it doesn't happen over night, it takes practice, lots of practice. When you watch someone who knows instinctually how to play pinball it's a thing to behold, but perhaps you need to know a bit before you really appreciate it. The only way to do that is to seek pinball out and give it an honest try. May I recommend a classic game over a modern game. Why? Because one of the things you really need to know about pinball are the rules. Every game has it's own set of rules and understanding those rules opens the door wide open to appreciating the game of pinball. It will take you from mindlessly batting the ball around a playfield to how do I explain this, the next level? To really trying to accomplish something? To really appreciating the nuances of the game of pinball. Modern games have a lot of stuff on the playfield, flashing lights, ramps, targets and the rule sets are deep. Some argue the rule sets on modern games are too deep. This can distract and detract from a casual players positive experience. Yes, for modern games shoot the flashing shots. That doesn't help much. So find a classic 70's, 80's or even 90's era game. The rules are on the small apron cards between you and the flippers. The rules on these cards are short and sweet. And do try and accomplish what the rules call for, it will change things for you. I know, I've been there. My son has been there and watching both of us come to that epiphany is a joy I'll always remember. Learning the rules then becomes fun, it's part of the game of pinball. Once you get the idea of it, now you start to learn two things. First the player can do things physically to attempt to control the outcome of a game and second pinball has it's own say in how things are going to go for you. Players and control the outcome of a game by using the flippers and via manipulating the pinball cabinet to control the ball. Flipper control isn't' just flipping the ball. It's using finesse to control the ball. Gentle taps to catch the ball, post pass or shatz/ally pass, etc. That's flipper control. Cabinet control is nudging, pushing or tapping the cabinet to get the ball to move off of playfield objects and away from draining the ball or to get the ball to the flippers for ball control. Both are easy to understand once you get the idea of it, but difficult to master. And pinball will always remind you that IT has a say in how your game will go. Oh yes, almost like it has a conscious. Or at least we like to think it does, again IYKYK. Every pinball machine is unique as is every game of pinball. There are times you might get 3 house balls, which is where you launch the ball, hit a switch and the ball drains. Modern machines are more forgiving here, because they have a ball save timer. Classic games typically do not. You will swear the game has it in for you and your efforts to beat your opponents or get that personal high score. And coming from me, I'd say you are very right. Even the best players will bow and acknowledge the will of the pinball machine. It is as they say, pinball after all. A few last notes about my personal experience with pinball and what makes it special. First why The Electric Starship Arcade (ESA) was so important to my experience. I saw pinball growing up. I played it very few times. I always considered it a quarter thief. As such I didn't give it much thought and my quarters went into arcade games where it felt I had more control over how long I could play. I never gave pinball a chance. Fast forward 30-40 years and through Mike (The Geek Pub) and David (The 8-bit Guy) Murray and now partners with Mike at (Time Rift Arcade) I learned that an arcade was just down the road from us. Mike and David had created their own arcade game for Attack of the PETSCII Robots and I wanted to show my respect and support and go play it and share my experience with others. That was our first time going to ESA. Mike keeps about 9 pinballs on the floor and everything is free play and he works very hard keeping his machines in excellent playing condition. This allowed me and my son the freedom to explore and experience pinball without the concern of just losing money on pointless games. This is why I urge you to seek out a free play arcade if you are unfamiliar. They are the best way to experience arcade IMHO. If you are in the Metroplex area I highly recommend ESA, it's family owned and operated by some of the nicest people you'll meet and it is what so many of us think of when we think Arcade, especially classic arcades. There is no other arcade in the metroplex like it. Check out The Electric Starship Arcade on YT. Finally the people. I have come to know so many awesome people like Cary here and so many others. They have helped me and my son so much to branch out and get to know people and participate in this hobby. There will always be fuddy duds in every hobby, but I can tell you the group of people around this hobby are some of the very best anywhere in any hobby. That's a promise from me to you. If you get into this, it's not just pinball, its the people all sharing in the love of this crazy addictive hobby of pinball. If you are in the local DFW area I hope to see you at one of our local DFW or NTX Pinball events or at TPF. Just find the tall guy and say hi, I'd love to get to know you!

This has always been my answer to people as well. This made me think of music too. Back in the day we physically collected music & was fun to view the artwork & inserts. Now I have all the music in the world at my fingertips which is amazing but I do miss the physical aspect. I could start collecting vinyl but I won't. Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. Things change. Pinball for me definitely has an "art collecting" aspect to it. They look pretty damn cool, great to show off & sometimes I just walk by my collection & don't even play but I'll just look. I don't get that digitally. However, there is some irony here when you talk about the digital world. I've always been fascinated with pinball but digital is what made this my hobby. Back in 2003 I was like 24 & just getting clean from years of drug & alcohol abuse. I was quite isolated for a while. I got into computers a bit. Through that I found a few pinball sims that really captured my imagination. I'm talking the Pro Pinball games which to this day are just absolutely ICONIC, Microsoft Pinball Arcade, & some other cool sets of tables. It was actually quite impressive what was out there. At this time Visual Pinball was also taking shape. I was BLOWN AWAY that I could play user created recreations of real tables as well as some great original ideas people had. What a cool hobby that was & still is. I got into wanting to make & mod my own tables. I was too poor to own any real tables yet but needless to say that is what started me off on my journey to being a real pinball collector. Nothing beats real tables but I still think any true pinball fans are missing out by not checking out what is out there is you can get a decent PC setup. For me, odd that with so many things going digital that pinball worked the opposite. Digital led to real for me. Also a shout out to what for me is a meditation tinkering & working on machines. Nothing better than polishing a game or some ramps & watching it become like new again.

We might be at a turning point or coming close to one when it comes to digital entertainment. I'm 35 and am on a screen constantly (Work, tv, etc.) and can't stand it, it's actually made me nauseous at times just thinking about it. Being a physical, non-digital device is partially what drew me to pinball. It's also an incredibly social activity and hobby. I run monthly tournaments now and everyone has been looking forward to them because they get a night to hang out with friends. I've also noticed how younger folks, my age and under, are also getting more and more involved. Pinball has been a tremendous hobby to get involved in, 100%

Cary , you nailed it . I have a very stressful job . Life is stressful for all of us . And pinball gives me an escape . Fixing them , modifying them and playing them . Can’t tell you how many times I pull up to a stop light and 90% of the people are looking at their phones . Light turns green and one by one , people start to realize it’s time to actually drive again . One of my pet peeves is the at dinner ignore my family cell phone thing . Wife and I purposely don’t use our phones at that time . I think partly because when I was a kid growing up we didn’t have that stuff and my family actually had a conversation. Better times 😊Thanks for a great reminder of why I love Pinball !

Phones :( Should have seen this coming 40+ years ago when we started seeing them installed in otherwise fun sports cars. You gonna drive that Ferrari, or talk on your car phone? I wonder how many people open their phone to scan the IC QR code, see a notification, and get distracted for an hour instead of playing pinball.
