Can you spray leaves during the summer to stop the critters from eating the leaves. Cherry, Peach, Avocado?
Thank you!
I highly recommend after spraying that you run hot hot water through your sprayer. Mine clogs up and takes forever to clear if you let the oil set up.
Excellent suggestion! I usually rinse out with water from the hose spigot, but I can certainly see hot water working better! Thank you!
Thank you🫶🏻!!!!!
Can i spray my fruit trees after fruit has set and is growing?
Excellent question. And yes, you can, depending on the spray you use. Some of the sprays you can use up to the day before harvest and other state to stop 2 weeks before harvest. The easiest way to tell is to read the label on the spray bottle of your choice. Not all sprays are the same. And you don't want to over spray or use an insecticide when you're dealing with a fungal infection, for example. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing! I made it for my husband he likes it! Next I will try it with hazelnut. Great video!
Thanks for watching. Hazelnut flavor sounds great!
Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I use Garden Marker pens I got on Amazon, they don't fade like Sharpies. I thought this video might be about 'how to tell what type of fruit tree one has'. I have a mystery tree planted in 2023 it was sold online as an 'Italian Plum', but now that it's in flower it looks nothing like one! I'm trying to figure out what it is that I bought and planted 😂, it's happy and thriving whatever it is🤣.
I will have to pick up one of those markers for my other garden needs. I've found that the embossing tags are just simpler and do not need replacement or touch up. Hopefully you find out what type of tree you have. Please let us know when you do, I enjoy mysteries. Thank you for watching
@@ashmorearboretum684 IMO Your embossing tag idea is much better than writing on plastic with markers! I once saw someone using cut up soda can pieces with a hole punched in them and embossing on them, 100% free, 🙂have a good weekend.
Thank you, made it and love it!
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it. Thank you for watching!
Thank you! I think I'll go for a huge bach of hazelnut cuttings, because it's already full spring and why not? I hope it will work. Do you think it would benefit from covering the pot with a plastic bag to keep the moisture in? I'm bad at regular watering my plants and for such vulnerable ones I usually prefer to use a plastic cover.
It may. Honestly ive had an issue with mold growth when i cover the trays. Maybe if i crack the lids a bit each day? If you cover yours, please keep me posted on your success or failures. Thank you for watching!
Is it safe to spray my fruit trees with neem oil while they're bloomed? If not what do you recommend?
I do not spray neem oil during full bloom. I switch to a general purpose spray like Bonide Fruit tree spray or Orchard Spray and follow the labels recommendations for concentrations to use at what stage of development the fruit tree is in (green tip, full bloom, petal fall, etc). I personally try to avoid spraying directly on full blooms because i don't want to disrupt pollination. If you do spray the blooms, i recommend spraying in the evening, once most pollinators have returned to the hives. Thank you for watching!
I have jelly type neem oil ..could you please tell me the dosage for I litre
what if the sprouts are really long already, like 6 inches long? I'm in Northern New Jersey, its been a very warm winter, im not seeing below freezing in the 2 week forecast so maybe i can plant them in the potato bags outside. Just cover them each night with a blanket or plastic perhaps? Your advice would be most helpful.
You could certainly plant them. Just bring them in or cover if you're going to have sub freezing temps. We usually plant our potatoes near the end of March here. Thank you for watching and the comment!
@@ashmorearboretum684 and thank you my dude
Does they survive?
Some do and some don't. Just like grafting, there were no guarantees. The addition of rooting hormone helps. This is why when I try to propagate, I do several to increase probability of success. Thank you for your comment, I hope this answers your question.
Very informative. It looks great. I'm a newbie but I'll be trying this for sure. Thanks for the cure recipe.
I'm certainly glad you are going to try it I use this same recipe for Canadian Bacon as well, and we prefer it over the Buckboard bacon i made in this video. Now is usually smoke a 50-60 lb batch at a time. Thanks for watching!
You better not have much of a bug problem or neem oil will not do the job. It is also sticky to mess with.
I usually don't have too much of an issue with bugs, but the neem oil is an excellent option for controlling aphids, which i do have. That mixed with a bit of copper sulfate does a pretty decent job of quelling problems before they really get a chance to take hold. We always try to go the organic route first before resorting to synthetic chemicals on our homestead. Thank you for watching.
Great video keep it up.
can the cuttings be taken while the vegetation is dormant and thrown away in the first month, so that they can be stored in the refrigerator and put in vases when the vegetation starts?
Yes they can, but i have had higher success rates with fresh cuttings.
@@ashmorearboretum684 ok
Great video thank you. One note: you said it was 2 teaspoons to a tablespoon. Mister Google says that it is 3.
That is dependent on they brand of neem oil you have. Always follow the manufacturers recommendations on the bottle. The one I'm currently using is 1T or 2T for every gallon. Thank you for watching.
Thanks!
No problem! Thank you for watching
How do u know how much #1 cure to use?? Explain that on the show!!
Thank you for watching and the comment. At the beginning of the video, I explained how I make our bulk bacon cure. I then follow the ratio of grams of cure for grams.of meat. As explained in the video, you must weigh your meat in grams to determine how much bulk bacon cure to use. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Definitely going to try this recipe. Your smoke house is prety bad ass. A tour of it and how you but it would be a good video.
Thank you and thanks for that suggestion. I will have to do that in a future video!
Sure would like to see a video of how you built your smoke house
Unfortunately i didn't video that process. Everything minus the bags of concrete and mortar, hardware, and some of the fasteners was reclaimed/re-purposed materials. I am planning on adding an offset fire box for cold smoking cheeses and meats. Thank you for watching!
Either #1 or #2, the rate of cure is the same!
60 grams of cure treats 60# of meat!!
Yes, it does. Then i make another batch of bulk cure and do another 60 lbs😅
Thats to much cure salt..the ratio is 100g salt 50grams sugar 15grams pink salt..
Im not following, where is the math wrong? 400, 200, 60 is the same ratio as 100, 50, 15.
Thank you brother
After watching 4 or 5 videos, finally someone actually made a video propagating hazelnuts. Thanks.
Does neem oil injure or kill bees?
Neem oil is moderately toxic to bees. It's best to use at dawn or just before dusk on your trees to prevent bee exposure. If you have bees present or active on your trees, id be certain to spray closer to dusk. This way the oil has time to dry before bee activity the next morning. This reduces bee exposure and chances of killing your pollinators.
i think thats is way too much for a prague powder to use. should it be less than one percent?
Please explain. I made a mix of bacon cure, containing salt, prague powder, and sugar. Where did my math go wrong?
Your maths is fine bud. Your mix is 9% Curing Salt which equates to about 0.25% of the total weight of meat if you add 2.5 % mix to the meat. I thought it looked really high till I worked it out
Question my neighbor put something on my hazelnut tree to stop it to grow nuts how can I bring back my hazelnut to grow its nuts again? Please let me know how I can do it ,my neighbor has a walnut tree Can I cut a piece of lime off my tree to try to regrow it her tree is on her side of the fence near mine.you can messages me on Facebook or email me [email protected] thank you
Can you show the result? Thanks! 👍
Hello, thank you for the video. What time of the year do you do each method? How thick should the wood be? Is a sucker or can you use branches, too? Should the cuttings have leaves or not? How do you store the pots and when do they go into soil outside?
I start taking cuttings in early summer, and i try to layer in late spring/ early summer, too. I prefer canes the diameter of my pinky finger or smaller <1/2". I have had best luck with shoots for layering, and the cuttings can come from young limbs. I store the pots inside in a south facing window as i do not currently have a greenhouse. If they are successfully rooted, I will transplant in late summer after the harshest weather has passed. It is imperative to keep them sufficiently watered until they get established. Thank you for watching and the comment!
Those plants look massive.
Thanks for watching and the comments. Yes those are indeterminate varieties and they usually grow to about 18' tall. They are trained (laid over) and grow back towards the ground at 10' so its easier to harvest. Thanks for watching!
Everything is reversed in this video. Left-handed is actually right handed.
That you are correct. My apologies sir.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing this information! I’d like to see a follow up video for the results. God Bless you as well
You're Vera welcome. Im planning a follow-up video, but an injury has set me back for awhile. Once im healed up i plan of doing videos again
Thank you! Thinking of doing coconut milk and a dairy free milk as dairy has now become a bother
Thank you and the coconut milk option sounds pretty good. But my wife isn't a fan of coconut milk. Thanks for watching!
You were featured on a recent 'Get to the Farm' shout out video!
Your volume is way too low for me I'm out
moving like slug
Thanks for the tips
You're very welcome.
Jealous of your smoke house.
Lol well thank you! It was a fun project to build
Good stuff. Can you do the same with most trees or is this just for hazelnut? God bless 👍
Thanks for watching. Some trees are much much more difficult to propagate than others. Not all can be propagated like this unfortunately.
Nice cutting board and island. Not to mention the bird.
Thank you sir.
They call that buck board bacon

A pork shoulder is also called a port butt or butt. Im quite aware of the anatomy of the pig. Bacon is traditionally made from the pork belly. However, bacon can be made from the pork shoulder (buckboard bacon) and pork loin (Canadian bacon). Different parts of the anatomy have a different term for the bacon, but the PROCESS is still the same. As for smoking, the process is quite simple as i explained the temperatures to keep the smokehouse at to get the smoke, not BBQ meat. Furthermore, wood selection is a personal preference i preferred not to discuss as there are so many variables that it is not worth the effort. Choose a wood type you like and smoke away. I prefer cherry, hickory, pecan, oak, apple/peach/plum/pear. You pick what is locally available. All these are found on my homestead, and i don't have to purchase or put much effort into acquiring. Oh, and there were 2 flavors of bacon in this video: brown sugar and maple syrup, and brown sugar with black pepper. These additives are optional and subjective. To each his own. The length of time the bacon is in the smoker is dependent on each piece of meat. Again I discuss in the video the temperatures the meat is taken to inside my smokehouse prior to removal. The bacon is them chilled before i slice and package the product for storage. Thank you for your comment and for watching.
Wow looks awesome. What temperature are you running the smoker?
Its wood fired so it fluctuates a bit but i try to keep it between 225 and 250. In the way I regulate the temperature is by spreading out the coals or pile in them up.
Thank you
You're very welcome
Terra Rosa has a very unique tuber, it's pink inside, it boils like regular potato, but when fried or cubed hashbrowns, it has an incredible taste and feel.
Well thank you for that bit of info. We are always looking for unique things to add to our gardens! I will definitely look into those spuds!
Thanks. I was wondering if this could be done. What zone are you in?
You're very welcome! We are in Zone 6B
That was really good
Well im glad you enjoyed it buddy
